Anticipation and Expectation
Author: Raine    Date: 01/12/2009 13:37:50

You know what eternity is? 8 days. Ask me again tomorrow and I will tell you -- 7 days. So much is going on right now that I don't know where to begin. Our President Elect will been given the keys to not just a a terrible economy, but a worsening foreign policy crisis since election day, (so long ago).

In our great anticipation, my concern for P-E Obama is that he will indeed have to change things as the facts on the ground change (and they change almost daily). Will this make him a person who broke campaign promises? I don't think so. I think it makes him a man who is going to have, quite possibly, the most difficult job in the world. Being one of the most popular people in the world taking the job of what may be known as the worst president ever:
“He’’s unusual. Most two-term presidents have a mixed record. Lyndon Johnson, one of the greatest achievements in the 20th century was civil rights legislation; on the other hand you have the extraordinary tragedy of Vietnam. Even Richard Nixon opened the door to China and had foreign policy credentials. Bush has nothing on the positive side, virtually nothing,” Ellis added

And that’’s not a minority opinion. In a 2006 Siena College survey of 744 history professors, 82 percent rated President Bush below average, or a failure.

Last April, in an informal poll by George Mason University of 109 historians, 98 percent considered him a failed president. Sixty-one percent judged him, as Ellis does, one of the worst in American history.
At first blush, it could be said that Barack Obama could actually do very little and still not fail as miserably as the 43rd administration did. We know he won't, because the fate and welfare of an entire nation is already resting on his shoulders.

It's a fine line to balance a global recession -- edging ever so slowly to a depression, war raging in Gaza, our continued wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the general unease of an American people. That leaves very high expectations of PE Obama. We want - truly want - him to succeed. In order for anyone to succeed, I have learned it is important to not set unrealistic expectations. After 8 years of having almost all expectations fail from a president, it is going to be hard to find balance without feeling like we as liberals are being sold out. We are so used to it after all. We had to fight harder we had to speak louder... and we are used to being in defense mode.

So I say, in this time of great expectations, keep fighting the battles and keep speaking up, knowing that possibly one of the biggest expectations of all is the one set BY Barack Obama. He asked for all voices to speak up, he said he would listen to opposing voices. Perhaps-- he himself is trying to be all things to all people, and that means that choices will have to be made. Some we will celebrate. Some we will protest.

In the coming months, patience and fortitude will be needed. What is important is that we do have a president who wants to bring the nation together again instead of the irrational bipartisan punditry and politics we have seen over the past 16 years. He may have a different way than neo-conservatives or liberals want him to unite the nation, and that is fine... but he is trying to bring us back together. That means all the difference in the world to me. I still anticipate and expect great things.

8 days.

:peace: and
Raine

I've been watching that religiously since we got within the 10-day mark. Do your weather charlatans have a better track record than the New England ones?

Oh, I'm so going to miss the wooden cadence and interminable pauses of a Bush speech.

Not.

Bush's talking has gotten slushier over the years. It sounds like he has half a cup of spittle in the corners of his mouth...

Bush is pissed because he knows that - once again - he fucked things up every which way including Sunday, despite his "best" efforts, and that a more competent person is coming in and will make him look as bad as he is.

Comment by wickedpam on 01/12/2009 14:52:32
does he even have the barest sliver of a conscience?

BobR,

You hit the proverbial nail on the head - including the "joy" he felt inspite of the thousands of deaths caused directly by his actions/decisions

I think this was the money quote from *ush today: "I never thought a black man would be elected President,"

Yup... That says a lot coming from a child of privledge and wealth who is moving into a community that would not let blacks live in before 2000. It also says a lot about his ability to be diplomatic and sensative in discussions of things like this.

Perhaps a better way of saying that would be something to the effect of "I believe that Americas brightest hopes and wishes are closer to being realized with the election of Barack Obama who represents all things American."

Or something like that. What a dolt. I cannot wait till he is gone.

Random thoughts I had this morning:

Bush will become the first president to commit suicide, I say within a year.

When Cheney finally meets his maker, how long will the line be to dance upon his grave?

Anyway...

I don't care if it's a wintry mix on Wednesday...if it takes me 15 hours to get home from DC, so what?

(hell, it took us that long to get home from Williamsburg in '07...)

I know this week we have the two clippers running through here but all I've heard is highs in the 20's and some wintery mix like Wed and Thur.

Morning all! Well it was a quiet relaxing weekend filled with flying objects - from dust to laundry to computer parts to years-old printouts. That's right - I've decided to clean and rearrange my pad. As you can imagine, there's all sorts of forgotten items lying around... including

- an old Sprint PCS cell phone w/ charger

- several thousand card protector sleeves and about 50 hard plastic protectors

- souvenir handouts from the Nov. 2004 RNC protest march

- several decks of playing cards, a tarot deck and a Mille Bournes deck..

- all kinds of natural objects, from seashells to glittery rocks to my acorn cap (which I use for a whistle)

- a couple Pez dispensers with Star Wars heads

Now to decide what to toss into a storage box, what to recycle and what to throw away..

Silk thermals lite wool... it is easy to dress for the cold. Sheesh. Momma should get these!

Packing for this trip is going to be bizarre, to say the least.

We're staying in a hotel, but I'm packing for a winter camp.

Alas, like many Boy Scouts, I do have voices in my head. I never ignore it when I'm camping in the winter, it's usually right. (about bringing extra gear and extra changes of clothes and such. It almost never tells me to slay the family pet.)

Star Wars Pez dispensers" Ebay.

Card Decks (Including Mille Bournes): Good Will or other charity.

Sprint Phone: Freecycle. Somebody is always looking for a phone. Or give it to a battered woman's organization so a woman at risk can call 911.

Card Protectors: Freecycle

Objects: Trash.

RNC Posters: Frame em.
