It was a day that will live in infamy... No, not the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but the first time the FBI had to raid TFG's "home". I am referring, of course, to the early morning raid on Mar-a-Lardo, where the FBI confiscated several boxes of documents. Considering the political and legal ramifications, this must be a fairly advanced and solid case.

Note: for easy of writing and clarity, I will break my self-imposed blog rule, and use TFG's name for the rest of this missive...

This is the culmination of all the stupidity and hubris of tRump and his acolytes. Back when he was in office, he and Republican leadership in Congress were focused on former Secretary Clinton and her emails. At that time, they were doing whatever they could to destroy her:
Trump — after a fierce campaign against Clinton in which he called for her to be jailed for her handling of classified material — signed a law in 2018 that stiffened the penalty for the unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents from one year to five years, turning it into a felony offense.

On top of that, the head of the FBI - Christopher Wray - was appointed by tRump.

Why does this matter? There's a good chance that the reason for the raid is to collect evidence that tRump violated the Espionage Act:
The former chief of the Justice Department’s national security division said Tuesday that the FBI warrant for the search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Fla., suggests prosecutors believe they have probable cause that there may have been violations of the World War I-era Espionage Act.

That law has traditionally been used to target government leakers, such as former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. But it also “actually has provisions that apply to essentially the mishandling [of classified material] through gross negligence, permitting documents to be removed from their proper place, or to be lost, stolen or destroyed,” Mary McCord, a veteran federal prosecutor who headed DOJ’s national security division in the closing years of the Obama administration, told the Yahoo News “Skullduggery” podcast.

McCord said that the Espionage Act is one of two federal crimes that prosecutors may be focusing on in their warrant to search Trump’s home. The other, she said, is another federal statute that targets anyone who “willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies or destroys public records.”

[...]

“Are we worried that some of this information would actually be shared outside of Mar-a-Lago, potentially with foreign adversaries? I’d be really concerned about that,” she said.

tRump and his minions are trying to frame this as a "witchhunt" and politically motivated, but he and his family are not doing themselves any favors. Son Eric let out that his father used the DOJ and FBI to go after his enemies, and tRump himself doth protest too much.

It's mid-August, just 3 months until election day (and 5 until the new Congress gets sworn in early next year). Hopefully, the arc of justice finds its mark before then, because Republicans have vowed to shut everything down if they take the reigns of power in Congress.

As a reminder - VOTE (I know you will), and get everyone you know to vote too, and vote blue.

regarding that stupid tweet link in the blog:

Bobb said Trump's legal team searched through two to three dozen boxes in a basement storage area, hunting for documents that could be considered presidential records, and turned over several items.

You know you're guilty when you have to plead the fifth

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

TFG had every opportunity to turn over the records.

Eric, as usual, shows poor judgment and may make things worse for his father.

This could very quickly become a trial, and a civil one at that.

In civil trials when one pleads the 5th, it can be used against him...

Just sayin'.

It would be appropriate. It would also be funny if TFG thought that it couldn't be used against him and said so publicly.
