Glorious
Author: BobR    Date: 11/16/2022 13:47:29

The results of last week's election were a bit of a stunner. Instead of losing seats, Democrats actually kept the Senate, and may actually gain one seat overall (depending on the results of the run-off in GA between Warnock and Walker). Four Governorships flipped from Republican to Democratic (and one the other way), resulting in a 3 state gain in the governors' mansions. None of the election-deniers supported by TFG won.

All of which leads one to question why he would bother to run for president again in 2024.

He did indeed make that announcement last night. It also appears he has modified his slogan:
Twitter users mockingly suggested Donald Trump debuted a new campaign slogan during his 2024 announcement on Tuesday night.

“In order to make America great and glorious again I’m announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump declared at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

Wags on social media joked that “Make America Great And Glorious Again” ? or MAGAGA ? would replace Trump’s “Make America Great Again” MAGA acronym.

“The hats’ll have to say MAGAGA — make America great and glorious again. If it makes you gag, get used to it,” cracked Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe.

“I tried to say #MAGAGA and activated my gag reflex,” actor and comedian John Fugelsang wrote.

Using the word "glorious" is an odd choice. Perhaps I am showing my age but "the glorious revolution of the proletariat" is an expression of Marxism. An odd choice indeed, since TFG is the type of person who would have been dragged to the guillotine by French revolutionaries.

Other leading members of the Republican party also don't see this as glorious:
At a Tuesday meeting of the Republican Governors Association, attendees in Orlando applauded loudly when former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ridiculed former President Donald Trump and said he should not be the GOP nominee for president in 2024

[...]

Earlier Tuesday, Trump’s most prominent rival at the moment, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, made some of his most barbed comments to date about the former president. DeSantis lumped Trump in with the “corporate media” as attacking him out of spite and jealousy, and gloated a bit about his own victory a week ago, comparing it with the poor showings of Trump-endorsed candidates.

“I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night,” DeSantis said. “The fact of the matter is, it was the greatest Republican victory in the history of the state of Florida.”

Of course, the DeathSantis victory in FL can be laid squarely on his gerrymandering of districts to ensure he'd win re-election. As for Christie, we all remember when he first criticized TFG, then groveled at TFG's feet after TFG won in 2016.

In fact, for most of the Republican establishment, they all looked down their noses, proclaiming to be "never-tRumpers", until all challengers were eliminated and TFG was the last one left standing. Could it happen again? Gawd, I hope not. Only time will tell, of course, but the Republican party is full of self-serving venal power-hungry hypocrites who would trade their mothers or spouses for a seat at the table. How would you describe that pack of rats each trying to climb over each other to get to the top?

Glorious.

Mornin' all!

It says so much that even with all the gerrymandering and lying and rules-lawyering, the GOP can only achieve the bare minimum.

It says even more that McCarthy is trying to bribe Henry Cuellar (D--TX) to switch parties.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I think that we should not underestimate TFG's chances in his party as it has gone further to the right than what was imaginable a decade earlier. (Mitt Romney is an outlier in his party now.) However, it must be admitted that a lot of people outside of the GOP now regard TFGs claims with great skepticism.

On a personal note, I have an interview later this morning at a good school for a permanent position with benefits.

Good to know he has morals. I remember when Republicans swept into power in 2000, several Democrats in the south switched parties after they were elected (or re-elected, in most cases). Talk about a bunch of pissed-off constituents...

NATO knows where that Russian missile came from (the one that landed in Poland).
