Good Morning.

Whelp, it appears that I was wrong. Israel is the 51st state.

Here is today's headline from Military.com:

The USS Gerald R. Ford Is Returning Home After Extended Deployment Defending Israel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After months of extra duty at sea providing protection for Israel, the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group will be heading home, the Navy announced on Monday.

The Ford and its accompanying warships will be replaced by the amphibious assault ship the USS Bataan and its accompanying warships, the USS Mesa Verde and the USS Carter Hall. The three vessels had been in the Red Sea and have been transiting toward the Eastern Mediterranean over the last few days.

The Ford will sail for home “in the coming days,” the U.S. 6th Fleet, the European-based U.S. naval command that's responsible for ships sailing in the Mediterranean, said in a statement.

The Ford was sent to the Eastern Mediterranean to be within striking distance of Israel since the day after Hamas' Oct. 7 attacks. The carrier stayed in the Eastern Mediterranean while its accompanying warships had sailed into the Red Sea, where they repeatedly intercepted incoming ballistic missiles and attack drones fired from Houthi-controlled Yemen. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited the Ford last month.

This is why the United States can't have nice things. I do mean that quite literally; anything we want or need here is always secondary to the military. Always.

It doesn't matter anymore that this is not the United States, and no American citizens are directly threatened, except by their own choice of staying in a war zone.

But we are doing it wrong - the military takes all the blood and treasure of this country and just gives it all away. We should at least take a lesson from the Hessian mercenaries of old, and make other Imperial states pay for the services we now provide.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

Great powers tend to help their allies. Since World War II, we have taken the role of Britain as the world's policeman and formed such alliances as NATO.

Mind you, I think that the situation with Israel is complicated. Many people support Israel for its own sake, even if they criticize its government. However, the evangelical wing of the GOP wants support of conservative policies in Israel in the hopes that it will set up the end times scenario that they pray for daily. (Their belief is that they will be raptured into Heaven, Jews will die or convert, and Israel and the Middle East will be the setting for the return of their Messiah. Suffice it to say, I reject this ideology and this theology.)

Israel's Supreme Court has ruled against Bibi Netanyahu's attempts to "reform" the judicial branch. As someone who morally supported the protesters against a power grab by the Israeli right-wing, I am pleased to see democracy strengthened in a world where it seems under constant attack.
