====================================

It seems to me that something like a BONUS, should not be assumed as part of a SALARY. It's a BONUS, in other words -- in addition to the contract that an employer has with an employee.

I like the idea of a bonus... I LOVED getting them... I also however... NEVER relied them as part of my income. Why so many companies and CEO's are acting like the idea of a bonus is a god given right is beyond me.

If people rely on those bonus' for stability and quality of life, then perhaps those companies could get rid of the idea of a bonus and simply increase employee salaries.

I think America needs to go back to the very basics of what a Bonus really was meant to be: It was a a nice thing for a job well done.

Those that are working for the companies that the government is bailing out did not do a good job. You know what sucks? Good people got caught on a sinking ship. I have been there before myself... but the truth is this...

If your company is failing, you should never have expected a bonus -- Contract or not.

I usually get one week's pay as a bonus at the end of the year. It was a nice thing although December was usually my big payout between the unused sick/personal check which was an extra two weeks and the overtime from the holiday hours. December was usually the only month I seemed to get ahead.

It's not just bonuses....don't forget about retirement packages, too.

As for me, I've been in the insurance industry my entire career....I went a few years early on with Harvard Community Health Plan with a meager year-end bonus, up until they merged with Pilgrim Health Care and started bleeding money.

After that, it was a concept alien to me until I got to athena. Then we got bonuses every year for the past five years....until this year. I don't actually know if they paid out or not, but it usually was in February. When I got the axe (2/17) there hadn't even been any news about them, and that was the week they usually paid out.

My friends, now not at liberty to say if they got bonuses or not (I'm an outsider now) have remained mum on the subject.
