Happy Earth Day
Author: BobR    Date: 04/22/2009 12:27:13

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that today is Earth Day. It was Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin who got Congress to declare April 20th as Earth Day back in 1970. Since then, the environmental movement has grown to include the entire world, and environmental legislation has been enacted to make our planet a cleaner place.

One of the great things about Earth Day is that it can be considered "grass-roots" (no pun intended), rather than government mandated. So every year, people have tried more and more to do what they can to conserve energy, minimize waste, reuse and recycle, and buy products that are organic or "green". As you might expect, this time of year we are inundated with articles helping us do just that.

U.S. News and World Report provides this obvious 5 list:
  1. Water fixtures. Swap out your old water fixtures for low-flow devices.

  2. Light bulbs. Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving compact flourescents [sic].

  3. Window shades. Get energy-efficient insulated window shades.

  4. Programmable thermostat. Install an efficient programmable thermostat.

  5. Electricity. Call your electric provider and buy green power.
(more detail at the link)

Of course, these are just tips for your home. In addition, you can also compost yard waste (and some kitchen waste as well), plant trees and xeriscaping plants, recycle or reuse as much as possible, buy in bulk rather than "convenient" single-serving, buy food from local growers, use the "let it mellow" approach to flushing the toilet, etc.

On the transportation side, it's just too obvious: use mass transit when possible, and otherwise use the least polluting transportation method you can (electric/hybrid car, motorcycle, scooter, bicycle, walk). You have to wonder about the American mind when you see people driving SUVs to the gym.

CAFE standards have helped with cars though, which leads to the other side of the coin with Earth Day - it's helped put the Government on notice that the environment is important to us and we expect them to mandate and create legislation that does that. That can come from Congress or from the EPA. Interestingly, it was President Richard Nixon who created the EPA (and Republicans have been hating him for it ever since, LOL) in 1970, the same year that Earth Day was created. Coincidence?

Considering how bad pollution was and how much better it is now, especially taking into account the increase in the planet's population, it's been a pretty good 39 years. When Earth Day hits the big 4-0 next year, the retrospectives and articles will be crazy ("buy this magazine to learn how to save paper!"). Will we have taken some bold steps between now and then? Perhaps higher fuel efficiency standards?

If there's any silver lining to the economic meltdown, it's that the "make work" jobs being created to boost the economy back on track can be the "green jobs" that we keep hearing about. Senator Debbie Stabenow says just that.

Here's hoping that next year we can look back on the past year proudly and know that we (collectively) made a difference.

Go hug a tree and thank it for making your oxygen.

Morning

We'll I've done 4 of those 5, not sure that my little city electric company has green power - might have to check that out

Morning all & Happy Earth Day! :peace2:

Well I can't quite make changes to my landlord's thermostats, but I have at the very least started replacing light bulbs with fluorescent ones as the old ones burn out. I've got all the sockets in my room done though!

Also there's been some environmental concern about CFL bulbs in that they use mercury (rather than neon or xenon). Well look out because here comes another alternative from Europe - the LED light bulb! They have about the same lifetime as a CFL bulb, and the issues with bulkiness and single-direction lighting seem to have been worked out. They also aren't as bright as traditional bulbs or CFLs, and are a bit more expensive though than CFLs but that will come down as they grow in popularity here.

Oh and one more from the tech front.. someone's working on a so-called plasma light bulb.

Interesting stuff..

Hope that new LED is better then the ones they have out now - bought a pack at Costco to replace florescents but they just didn't give off enough light. Had to do back to the florescents to be able to see.

Yeah the old design LED bulbs were very bulky, because of the nature of LEDs giving off light in a single direction. This also makes them seem extremely dim except at the spot where they're focused.

This new one that Philips came up with seems like a better design though.

It will be interesting to see if they can tame that tiger to produce a bulb that generates the lumens of a typical home bulb

Comment by Raine on 04/22/2009 14:21:09
I am really tired of people trying to say it's not torture. Seriously.

Even the Bush Administration said it was torture! They attempted to legalize it!

looking at the local tv coverage - they aren't saying how he died just that it was an apparent suicide. Call came in to the Fairfax police about 4:48am at the Hunter Ridge Estate Hunter Mill Estates subdivision. According to one of the stations, they found him in the basement.

Ugh.

You all are going to have to pick up my slack today. I've already driven 40 miles, and I'll be putting on another 30 by sundown. My in-laws are flying in from Miami on a big, snorty, Boeing 767, and then I've got lights, computer, and TV on right now.

Anti-Earth Day in the TriSec household; I'll be buying bottled water and throwing out my recyclables next!

Then again I keep having to fight my own derpression since it makes me unable to get things done especially when I need to get them done.

I've been seeing some new LED lighting fixtures come through here from one of Philips recent acquisitions. One looks like a Christmas tree string but it's intended to be woven into a theater curtain, from a distance you would be able to see moving video. Others look more like conventional under-counter fixtures. For the moment, many are too electrically noisy to allow their use in a home. Yes, they cost a lot and the price should come down eventually. It's hard to make an inexpensive lamp when one LED may cost $2 apiece and you need many to make a fixture.

I try to get over there but now that we're breaking in a new technician and I've got customers that want to be present when I'm testing my blogging time has significantly decreased lately.
