I am not writing a blog this morning.

But, I'll update a couple of things. Yesterday, Bob wrote this blog about the future of the newspaper industry. We're pretty much at ground zero on that one, as the venerable Boston Globe is on the verge of shutting down. The parent company has extended the deadline by 48 hours...so I'll get at least one more Sunday Globe.

The Boston Globe received an eleventh-hour reprieve early this morning when its owner, the New York Times Co., agreed to extend the deadline for unions to agree to $20 million in concessions until tomorrow.

More than a half-hour after the midnight deadline passed, Globe management said enough progress had been made in talks with unions that the Times Co. would wait at least another two days before acting on its threat to shutter the Globe. Any agreement would still have to be ratified by each union's members.

"Because there has been progress on reaching needed cost savings, The Boston Globe will extend the deadline for reaching complete agreements with its unions until midnight Sunday May 3," Globe spokesman Robert Powers said in a statement.

Globe management released the statement as negotiators from management and the Globe's largest union, the Boston Newspaper Guild, conducted another marathon bargaining session that began yesterday morning and stretched past midnight. The Times Co. is seeking $10 million, or half of all union concessions, from the Guild, which represents more than 600 editorial, advertising, and office workers.

"We have given the New York Times Co. and Globe management proposals for deep cuts in our members' pay and benefits that we believe will save The Boston Globe," Daniel Totten, Guild president, said in a statement. "We are awaiting the company's response."

Talks between the Guild and the company are scheduled to resume tomorrow, according to a union spokesman.

Staying local, perhaps you've heard of the unctuous Jay Severin? He's made a couple of appearances on "right wing world" and for a few years was a marginal Libertarian. Well, he's gone and stuck his foot in it. He was placed on "indefinite suspension" this week by WTKK over his on-air commentary.

Jay Severin, the fiery right wing talk show host on Boston's WTKK-FM radio station, was suspended yesterday after calling Mexican immigrants "criminaliens," "primitives," "leeches," and exporters of "women with mustaches and VD," among other incendiary comments.

Heidi Raphael, a spokeswoman for the station, said Severin had been suspended indefinitely from his afternoon drive-time show. She declined to say which of his comments - made since an outbreak of swine flu was linked to Mexico in recent days - sparked the suspension.

"I can assure you that the station has not been using the remarks for which he has been suspended in on-air promos," she said, declining to comment further.

In an e-mail, Severin, a bombastic voice whose views often mirror those of fringe conservatives and who rarely lacks something to say, referred questions to his lawyer. "I am simply not at liberty to discuss it at this time," he wrote.

George Tobia, his lawyer, said it was not clear how long Severin will be on suspension. "All we know is it's indefinite," he said in a telephone interview. "We're just learning of it, and we're dealing with it."

Severin's comments sparked deep concern among Mexicans and other Latinos living in the Boston area, prompting what Tobia described as a flood of complaints to station management in recent days.

"It would certainly be unfortunate if someone was suspended because some people didn't like what he said," Tobia said.

He said he did not know Severin's precise comments.

In one of his broadcasts this week, Severin said: "So now, in addition to venereal disease and the other leading exports of Mexico - women with mustaches and VD - now we have swine flu."

Later, he described Mexicans as "the world's lowest of primitives."

"When we are the magnet for primitives around the world - and it's not the primitives' fault by the way, I'm not blaming them for being primitives - I'm merely observing they're primitive," he said.

He added that Mexicans are destroying schools and hospitals in the United States. He also criticized their hygiene.

"It's millions of leeches from a primitive country come here to leech off you and, with it, they are ruining the schools, the hospitals, and a lot of life in America," he said.

He added: "We should be, if anything, surprised that Mexico has not visited upon us poxes of more various and serious types already, considering the number of criminaliens already here."

Changing gears....we'll take a look at some sports for a second. Are there any horse racing fans among us? (touchy subject, I know.) But if you follow the Triple Crown even slightly, you should know who Bob Neumier is. He got his start here on WBZ-Boston as a sports broadcaster, and has gone on to bigger and better things. Unfortunately, he has taken suddenly ill and won't be broadcasting the Derby today.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—NBC horse racing analyst Bob Neumeier was taken to a Louisville hospital on Friday after collapsing during a telecast from Churchill Downs.

Neumeier was off camera during "Ladies First: Bravo at the Kentucky Derby" when he fell ill said track spokesman Darren Rogers. He was taken to Audubon Hospital a short distance from the track, where he was awake and alert.

Neumeier was being held for observation and will not participate in NBC's coverage of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

And lastly, with the Red Sox and Celtics both wallowing in a sea of suck...that leaves us with Da Broons. Last year, we all felt it was the Celtics' turn to reach the top. The Bruins are carrying that same vibe this year. It's been an awfully long time since Lord Stanley's Cup was skated around the Gahhhden. They've already faced their toughest challenge in the Habs.....and are one game up on an old nemesis and friend.

It's Scoop's first team and my old second team....even though they play in North Carolina now, we'll always have a special place for them in the hearts of New England.

Morning all, (at least it was when I started writing)

The Jacobs basher in me won't let me enjoy the current run of the bRuins. I'd like to be proven wrong that this team won't get blown up next year. And there's no way the Habs were the toughest challenge. They're in major turmoil, sorta like the Yankees of the NHL.

I try to stomach Severin once in a while, but he's waaay out there. He wants the first action when the new Republican Congress is seated in 2010 is the immediate impeachment of Obama.

Best & Brightest = Greedy & Ignorant

You can bet starting Monday that I will be starting to walk during lunch with an AM walkman tuned to Mama.

Reading some of the snarky comments about the Globe in the articles from the wingnuts who want the paper to go under. Like it would really suck for Boston's only daily to be that right-wing piece of shit Murdoch rag the Herald. Considering what's happening to the AJC it makes me wonder if there will be any good newspapers left.

That was NOT a blog?

Well, it was a nice read, whatever you wish to call it! Sorry about the Red Sox; if its any consolation to you, I do root for them when they play the Yankees.

This Jay Seversin guy (don't think I've heard of him before) needs to be taken out and publicly beaten; preferably in a Bull Ring in Mexico!
