The day is finally upon us, bringing with it the turkey, stuffing (or dressing, depending on where you live), cranberry sauce, and various casseroles, vegetables, and desserts that come out of hibernation for this one day of the year. I wonder why that is?.... Are they too difficult to make the rest of the year?... The recipe only feeds a small army?... It would lose that "special occasion" charm?

Regardless, we continue a tradition supposedly started several hundred years ago when settlers took one day to forget about their troubles and appreciate the good things they had. That tradition has continued until the present.

Nearly every day on this blog we discuss the state of our nation, retched as it is, and sometimes try to entertain ourselves. Given the spirit of the day, I would like this blog to be the exception. Despite any of our problems, be they political, personal, economic, or spiritual, there will always be someone who has it worse. Today I ask all our bloggers to think about all the things that have blessed their lives, and tell us what you're thankful for.

I will do so individually in the comments along with everyone else. For the staff here collectively, I would dare say that we're extremely thankful we have this venue at all. Most everyone here knows the story of the dark path that led us to this bright spot. Several months ago, the situation was very different and the future looked grim.

Perhaps that's the lesson to be learned from taking stock of your past history. When the going is rough, it is often a dirt road to a destination you never expected. In retrospect, we often realize that the hardship was a necessary part of the journey. Where we all are right now is a result of our mistakes as well as our smart choices, and all of our unchosen circumstances, good and bad.

If we look at all the good things in our lives right now, we must realize that is was the bad road as well as the good that got us here, and this will be the case in the future as well. So be thankful for the struggles too, for they are a part of the odyssey....

If you're in a bind at the table today, try Philmont Grace. It might have all we need to be thankful for today...

For food,

yor raiment,

for life,

for opportunity,

for friendship and fellowship,

we thank thee oh Lord.

Amen.

Happy Tofurkey Day everyone!

I truly am thankful for:

Friends who would lay down in front of traffic for me

A warm house

2 lovely cats

Da'Blog that keeps me sane

A "Higher Being" given talent to entertain people and make them laugh

I am thankful that I never had to face the question of "Am I brave enough to fight in a United States uniform?"

I am thankful there are other men and women who will make the choice so I don't have to.

I hope today, and every day for their safe return.

And, most of all I am thankful that in a little over a year we will have a new president!

( couldn't resist )

May all of my blog friends be in a cozy place, surrounded with love today.

I am thankful that my Dad always told me that when you think your life is bad look around and someone else is always worse off. I am thankful for my family however small it is. I am thankful for these 2 things the most. Courage and Survivor without both you will never have either. And on a lighter note I am very thankful for my Big Hunk of Love my cat Gen.R.E.Lee he never lets me get away with a day w/o courage.Happy Thaksgiving

Who decided to have the Cowboys play the Jets on Thanksgiving? Is that even fair?

And for the ATL contingent, if you don't have NFL Network, the Colts-Falcons game should be simulcast on a local channel.

Driving in to work, I finally got to hear the Naomi Wolf interview that Randi did. And it was only 50 minutes (44 if you count the start of the show hour at :06), not the full hour.

Hello everyone! I have not had a chance to get on the internets till now. ok, I actually had an hour on the couch. The family left at 530, the food WAS ready at 2 pm, and the meal went of with out a hitch... hooboyeeee, I am still full!

I am very grateful for the friends and family that I have. I am SO grateful for the mornings that we spend together, listening to the big show. (And yes, I am grateful for :drink:, :clown:, and )

But really, it isn't the same without the laughs I truly get from 9 (ok, 9:30) until noon from my blog friends. You are more than blog friends, you are friends. period end of report. ;)

I am grateful for BobR... He makes me smile ...every day.... Babe, I love you.

I am happy that I have Tri and Bob as admins on this blog, and on the board.

I am grateful that I still feel hope in my heart that we can and will make this country better.

I give thanks for having a wonderful home.

I give thanks for my camille purring every day.

I give thanks for all those out there working to make this world a better place.

I know we can always be worse off, and I am grateful that I can celebrate today. The candles lit in my home tonite are for the hope that others can give these thanks and even more in the very near future. My heart if filled with happiness, and all of you hear on this blog helped to fill it.

I only hope, that I can pass some of the abundant overfill of happiness on.

If I can't, I can always give them some leftover stuffing. :D

:peace: and

Good evening everyone (I guess that means you, Livin ). Dinner was a great success; as always, there was too much food. The family has left, though, and now we can relax and watch the game and wait for friends to drop by.

I guess I should be thankful I still have family nearby, and family that I can get along with. I feel more thankful for friends, however. Unlike family, they have a choice and they choose to be a friend.

When it comes to being thankful, it's too easy to look at the obvious things. A good job, love, this blog (and the board)... they're the easy ones. It's harder to be thankful when things aren't going so well, and harder to remember these simple ones when things are going well:

I'm thankful I have legs that work so I can walk in the sunshine and cold and rain.

I'm thankful I have arms that work so I can do the hard work that needs to get done.

I'm thankful I have eyes that work so I can see the world in all it's beauty and misery.

I'm thankful I have ears that work so I can listen to music and the hateful words of our miserable "leaders".

I'm thankful I can smell and taste...

I'm thankful I can play my own music when there isn't any around.

I'm thankful I was borne to intelligent involved parents that made sure my brain and my soul were well fed when I was growing.

I'm thankful I am a liberal so I can feel the hurt and need of others, rather than wonder why people don't just eat cake.

And finally - I'm thankful for every year I get older, because the alternative is worse. :)

I'm hanging in there. Too bad I can't watch football though, but with the crushing the Jets are getting from the evil Cowboys maybe it's better I can's see it.

It's a quiet night tonight as MSG is just running Knicks and Rangers Bios which just involve me changing tapes every half-hour.

How was BobR's finicky brother?

Hey folks....here at last. The Wingnuts-in-law were not too raging this evening. We were actually all being civil and fawning over a family friends' newborn daughter. That usually takes the edge off potential familial political food fights.

Anyway...I can't resist posting this. to any usurpers, we all know the Pilgrims invented Thanksgiving!!!

The Thanksgiving in Boston Harbor

by Hezekiah Butterworth

“PRAISE ye the Lord!” The psalm to-day

Still rises on our ears,

Borne from the hills of Boston Bay

Through five times fifty years,

When Winthrop’s fleet from Yarmouth crept

Out to the open main,

And through the widening waters swept,

In April sun and rain.

“Pray to the Lord with fervent lips,”

The leader shouted, “pray;”

And prayer arose from all the ships

As faded Yarmouth Bay.

They passed the Scilly Isles that day,

And May-days came, and June,

And thrice upon the ocean lay

The full orb of the moon.

And as that day, on Yarmouth Bay,

Ere England sunk from view,

While yet the rippling Solent lay

In April skies of blue,

“Pray to the Lord with fervent lips,”

Each morn was shouted, “pray;”

And prayer arose from all the ships,

As first in Yarmouth Bay;

Blew warm the breeze o’er Western seas,

Through Maytime morns, and June,

Till hailed these souls the Isles of Shoals,

Low ’neath the summer moon;

And as Cape Ann arose to view,

And Norman’s Woe they passed,

The wood-doves came the white mists through,

And circled round each mast.

“Pray to the Lord with fervent lips,”

Then called the leader, “pray;”

And prayer arose from all the ships,

As first in Yarmouth Bay.

Above the sea the hill-tops fair—

God’s towers—began to rise,

And odors rare breathe through the air,

Like balms of Paradise.

Through burning skies the ospreys flew,

And near the pine-cooled shores

Danced airy boat and thin canoe,

To flash of sunlit oars.

“Pray to the Lord with fervent lips,”

The leader shouted, “pray!”

Then prayer arose, and all the ships

Sailed into Boston Bay.

The white wings folded, anchors down,

The sea-worn fleet in line,

Fair rose the hills where Boston town

Should rise from clouds of pine;

Fair was the harbor, summit-walled,

And placid lay the sea.

“Praise ye the Lord,” the leader called;

“Praise ye the Lord,” spake he.

“Give thanks to God with fervent lips,

Give thanks to God to-day,”

The anthem rose from all the ships,

Safe moored in Boston Bay.

“Praise ye the Lord!” Primeval woods

First heard the ancient song,

And summer hills and solitudes

The echoes rolled along.

The Red Cross flag of England blew

Above the fleet that day,

While Shawmut’s triple peaks in view

In amber hazes lay.

“Praise ye the Lord with fervent lips,

Praise ye the Lord to-day,”

The anthem rose from all the ships

Safe moored in Boston Bay.

The Arabella leads the song—

The Mayflower sings below,

That erst the Pilgrims bore along

The Plymouth reefs of snow.

Oh! never be that psalm forgot

That rose o’er Boston Bay,

When Winthrop sang, and Endicott,

And Saltonstall, that day:

“Praise ye the Lord with fervent lips,

Praise ye the Lord to-day;”

And praise arose from all the ships,

Like prayers in Yarmouth Bay.

That psalm our fathers sang we sing,

That psalm of peace and wars,

While o’er our heads unfolds its wing

The flag of forty stars.

And while the nation finds a tongue

For nobler gifts to pray,

’T will ever sing the song they sung

That first Thanksgiving Day:

“Praise ye the Lord with fervent lips,

Praise ye the Lord to-day;”

So rose the song from all the ships,

Safe moored in Boston Bay.

Our fathers’ prayers have changed to psalms,

As David’s treasures old

Turned, on the Temple’s giant arms,

To lily-work of gold.

Ho! vanished ships from Yarmouth’s tide,

Ho! ships of Boston Bay,

Your prayers have crossed the centuries wide

To this Thanksgiving Day!

We pray to God with fervent lips,

We praise the Lord to-day,

As prayers arose from Yarmouth ships,

But psalms from Boston Bay.

I'm heading in...off to the mines in the morning.

Hold down the fort, Livin. Keep smiling, some days it's all you can do.

Kim out! :peace:

The ATL contingent is watching Forrest Gump (on the History Channel!!). It's a perfect Thanksgiving movie. The cuts and dubbed in audio are a little aggravating though...

We're thinking about you Livin - hang in there... :hug2:

Finicky? That's certainly being polite

He's the only one Camille didn't like - she almost tried to bite him...

Comment by livingonli on 11/23/2007 03:14:24
I guess Camille is a good judge of character.

It's hard to watch a movie on basic cable with all the cuts and bleeps. It's interesting when I've been in Canada and even the broadcast channels run movies unedited (although you still have to suffer with commercial breaks).

It's good to have a quiet night at home on a holiday when every thing's done.
