In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.

Fading light, Dims the sight,
And a star, Gems the sky,
Gleaming bright,
From afar, Drawing nigh,
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise, For our days,
Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
Neath the sky, As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

Very cool! I like this from the bottom of that site:

"There'll be two dates on your tombstone

And all your friends will read 'em

But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em..."

Come on caller... Tell us... Why should we keep Gitmo open?

Hi everyone.

Anothr day that I ended up sleeping in. I took a late shower before I went to sleep.

After today so I get the holiday pay and OT I have 2 weeks off where I hope to get some things done like resolving my debt matters and downsizing my life so it won't be "vacation" in the traditional sense.

As we relax this Memorial Day, let us remember those who have served this country, both the living and the dead. Let us resolve that they will not be forgotten, in times of war and in times of peace. Let us remember them every day, ensuring that those who have returned to us have their needs meet by the nation that they swore to defend and let us also honor those whose names we still hold dear in our memories.

Wow. Perfect Raine.

Will, I hate to be a bitch about this, but please don't conflate Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Today we remember the fallen, those who aren't here to share their stories with us the living. In November on the 11th we honor those are still with us who have served.

Today, I honor the memory of my uncles, Charles Smith & William King. Who both served in the Second World War. I also honor the memory of my grandfather, Herbert King who served in the Great War.

Besides my family members, I will also remember a great friend of the family Mondo, Thomas Bratton. He left a good deal of him body in Viet Nam. Tom also left part of his soul there too. He was a troubled man. But a great friend to my family.

Waiting for a link, but this is a VERY disturbing story:

Boxer Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter is in "extremely critical condition" after an accidental hanging, according to local media.

That said: Phoenix PD PIO couldn't confirm the identity of the little girl who was found in critical condition after apparent hanging.

It has been confirmed by the PPD that it WAS a 4 year old girl.

Mondo, I agree with you about the conflation. I do not think you are being bitchy about it. This day is for those who died. I believe even our Vet's understand this.

I wish most of America did... Thank you for sharing.

I never knew my Uncle Dick, he was my Oma's brother. He was German, and was not allowed to fight on the front lines because of that. He signed up for the Navy during WWII and was assigned as cook on a battleship. (I do not know what ship) That ship was destroyed.

Blessed be that he is the only family member I have that gave their life for this country.

Neither of my uncles died in the service, they lived long productive lives and were able to tell their kids what they did in the War.
