Shocked? They aren't. Author: RaineDate:06/01/2009 12:37:54
I don't even know where to begin this morning. Back in April, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report regarding the concerns of homegrown terrorism. The Republicans were apoplectic, you will recall. It was not a long report, but there is one paragraph that seems to really get everyone up in a tizzy:
Paralleling the current national climate, rightwing extremists during the 1990s exploited a variety of social issues and political themes to increase group visibility and recruit new members. Prominent among these themes were the militia movement’s opposition to gun control efforts, criticism of free trade agreements (particularly those with Mexico), and highlighting perceived government infringement on civil liberties as well as white supremacists’ longstanding exploitation of social issues such as abortion, inter-racial crimes, and same-sex marriage. During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the number of domestic rightwing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks, and infrastructure sectors.
Enter yesterday, when we heard of the assassination of Dr. George Tiller. McClatchy writes:
Dinwiddie said she met Roeder while picketing outside the Kansas City Planned Parenthood clinic in 1996. Roeder walked into the clinic and asked to see the doctor, Robert Crist, she said.
"Robert Crist came out and he stared at him for approximately 45 seconds," she said. "Then he (Roeder) said, 'I've seen you now.' Then he turned his back and walked away, and they were scared to death. On the way out, he gave me a great big hug and he said, 'I've seen you in the newspaper. I just love what you're doing.'^"
Roeder also was a subscriber to Prayer and Action News, a magazine that advocated the justifiable homicide position, said publisher Dave Leach, an anti-abortion activist from Des Moines, Iowa.
"I met him once, and he wrote to me a few times," Leach said. "I remember that he was sympathetic to our cause, but I don't remember any details."
Leach said he met Roeder in Topeka when he went there to visit Shelley Shannon, who was in prison for the 1993 shooting of Tiller.
"He told me about a lot of conspiracy stuff and showed me how to take the magnetic strip out of a five-dollar bill," Leach said. "He said it was to keep the government from tracking your money."
Roeder, who in the 1990s was a manufacturing assemblyman, also was involved in the "Freemen" movement.
Scott Roeder, American Terrorist. Walking around amongst us. Previously arrested for his ties to anti-government group. There are others who assisted in fanning these flames. Operation Rescue, upon learning of the arrest of Mr. Roeder, pulled down its website. You see. Mr Shroeder seems to frequent those boards. Being the internet, things don't really go away- they go to google cache:
I do not know if this assassination could have been prevented, but Federal Law enforcement has taken serious notice, Attorney general Eric Holder issued the following statement:
"The murder of Doctor George Tiller is an abhorrent act of violence, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers at this tragic moment. Federal law enforcement is coordinating with local law enforcement officials in Kansas on the investigation of this crime, and I have directed the United States Marshals Service to offer protection to other appropriate people and facilities around the nation. The Department of Justice will work to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice. As a precautionary measure, we will also take appropriate steps to help prevent any related acts of violence from occurring."
And for that I am happy. I had a very difficult getting to sleep last night. Between Groups like Operation Rescue, formerly headed up by Randal Terry, and people like Bill O'Reilly, the Teabaggers and other extremists, I am concerned that what the DHS report said is true. The Oklahoma City bombing did not happen in a vacuum and neither did this murder. Randal Terry had a few things to say about this assassination as well. (project much?)
Shocked? He's shocked that after his group hunted down and stalked Dr. George Tiller for over ten years that it came to this? That just drips with lying hypocricy at its very deepest level. These people don't just stand in opposition to a woman's right to choose - they HATE. They drip with hatred. They justify murder. There is no question in my mind that this was what groups like Operation Rescue wanted to have happen. They wanted a martyr for the cause, and they got one with Scott Roeder. Now they too can say they are not culpable. As for Mr. Terry, and all the other anti-life people: right now, I would suggest they seek salvation from this immoral murderous anti-abortion campaign they are running. They aren't shocked, this was the desired result.
While many of us still celebrate our new Administration, there ARE those who would undermine this great nation and make it less secure by justifying their own violent agenda under the name of their god. They would seek to create terror in the hearts and minds of those they find disagreements with. I am concerned; I hope that state and local governments start to treat this as it really and truly is: Domestic Terror. Those that are complicit in fanning the flames of hatred regarding this terror will once again deny any culpability. They will tsk tsk the situation and claim that this man was just an anomally, ignoring the fact that he has been stalking Dr. Tiller for years. They will wring their hands just as they did when people were mass murdered inside a Unitarian Church in Tennessee last year, to be once more forgotten until it happens again. I won't forget - it's my body and my choice.
radioguychrisBad news. Steph just now called in sick, so we're going to put on a best-of show for at least the first hour while we try to find a fill-in.
July 7, Kansas: Scott Roeder is sentenced to sixteen months in state prison for parole violations following a 1996 conviction for having bomb components in his car trunk. Roeder, a sovereign citizen and tax protester, violated his parole by not filing tax returns or providing his social security number to his employer.
Took a few minutes to find a non-wingnut site that had this story.. the guess-timate of the cost for the jets was $24,000 - sure he paid for the dinner & theater tickets but I'm sure he could've afforded to pay for the planes himself and spare the damn headaches we all get from the unhinged right-wing media machine drooling with hypocrisy over this..

Morning all. Spent most of today so far, at the auto repair shop. Damn.
This guy who killed the doctor is a terrorist, for sure. Most people, myself included, are against abortion but pro-choice (which I like to call Pro-Freedom, its pisses off the right who think they have the mantle on freedom). They should keep this guy isolated from the rest of the prison when they put him in for life!

Excellent post, Raine!
Randall Terry is LAUGHING on Hartman. Laughing.
Is dialogue possible with someone who does not see how his words can inspire hate and violence?

These wackos are against birth control because they want to control women's sexual behavior.

Ultimately, I believe that is about social control and power for Randall Terry and his ilk. They wish to recreate an idealized past -- with themselves as the sole arbitrators of what is allowed in society.
