Change is in the Air.

Iran is in a state of turmoil right now. The state media and Ahmadinejad have declared victory, but - well you see, it seems as those results are being highly disputed. It is heartbreaking to see what is happening over there right now.

At first sight, this reminded me of Tienanmen Square. But, after watching the goings on over the weekend, I would say it more reminds me of the Orange Revolution during the Ukraine elections of 2004. According to twitter reports I saw last night, the Iranian army has announced its neutrality. (That link has current tweets from Iran and around the world) The Army announcing its neutrality is a sign that this is not going away anytime soon, and this could go either way for the people of Iran. It is good news though for the entire country. Unlike the Ukraine it is not peaceful, and there is a revolution rumbling, but with the military standing down, it looks far less dictatorial for them. According to Reuters this morning the EU is calling for 'Iran to clarify the election outcome'. I concur.

One thing is for sure, this country is populated by a very young generation. According to this BBC Article, "About half its 71m people are under 25; nearly two-thirds under 30." The Shia Clerics must be freaking out right now. They are the ones who - for the most part - choose who gets to run for the office of President. They chose Mousavi as a more moderate alternative, and even as exit polls were showing him winning (Al Jazeera at one point declared him the winner), it was not what happened. As Clintster pointed out last Friday, there was something special and wonderful that seemed to be happening in Iran. Now it looks like chaos. There are far too many reports of bad butterfly ballots, vote tampering and even boxes of votes going missing, for anyone to have faith in this election outcome.

Something has to give. This could be the best thing that ever happened to Iran - or sadly the worst. One thing is for sure, the whole world is watching. Even if the country is trying to black out the media - we are watching. We know that you are marching and protesting and pleading with your government for fair and honest elections.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened here in America if we protested our elections with so much passion in the year 2000. Understand, I am glad we did not have the violence that we are seeing in Iran right now. I hope that Iran finds the correct and honest resolution to its woes. People are tired of politicians who rule by fear and ignorance instead of hope (hope being in whatever form they may find it). For the Ukraine it was orange, perhaps for Iran it is green. No matter what, a change is going come to Iran.

Morning folks!

Whale of a weekend...I was at the store Saturday, but started Sunday with my monthly platelet donation. Then we went out in the rain all afternoon on the 'great birdbath hunt', finally winding up at Drumlin Farm (Mass Audubon) where I found a nice little one for just $36 (with my discount.)

Then I pulled out "The Bible" (Julia Child) and made a fine Sunday dinner of Roast Chicken with potatoes, onions, and bacon....washed down with a nicely-aged California boutique Chardonnay (v2004).

And then I wake up this morning to a stone cold dead computer. I think it's the power supply; going to have to take a peek this evening. (It was working just fine last night.)

Anyway....on to another Monday!

Ooof.. power supply failures suck. Especially if it's a name brand because the parts tend to be either a hard-to-find size or something custom made.

Let me know if you need a hand locating a replacement I know some ppl..

Gooood morning everyone.

That sucks, Tri. Hopefully if the power supply failed it didn't take anything else with it.

Right down the end of my street is a small, independent computer repair shop. I've done business with them before, so we'll probably be in good hands.

But I will keep you posted.

Listening to the last bits of Jeff Santos (local guy) before The Zone cuts into the 2nd hour of Momma.

He's pretty good; maybe he'll go national someday. (Then again, he's on from 6am...can't you cut your last hour so we can get all of Momma?)

Say now, I was reading another report on the Air France crash, and I had a *ding* moment. Remember the Airbus that piled it into New York about a month after 9/11? The vertical stabilizer snapped clean off, and was eventually traced back to wake turbulence from a 747. Since the French plane would have the same kind of composite tail, and a severe weather event is the prime suspect, seems to me the same thing could have happened. Especially since they found the tail virtually intact floating in the ocean.

Was up at the ungodly hour of 2AM calling into a talk show about the DTV conversion. Seems that people around here were having trouble picking up the NBC affiliate and after hearing suggestions from callers that they just needed to move their antenna I mentioned that they were running at reduced power because only part of the new transmitter is installed. They can't finish installation until the old one is pulled out. Who knows how long that will take?

One thing I didn't think about is the people who use those AM/FM/TV sound portables to listen to TV because they are blind. There's no such thing as a digital TV equivalent and may not be for a long time. I don't even think there's a "portable" TV either, because they take too much power for battery operation. Only alternative I can see, besides buying a TV, is getting a USB tuner for a PC.

Oh well, who cares. Much more important to have 4 potential video streams (probably 3 for infomercials).

I've said it before...go look up Athena's "Payerview" website.

Medicare B is listed in the top five of the "best payors overall" list. That means they turn things around quickly, pay things correctly the first time through, and are generally easy and professional to work with.

Government CAN do it more efficiently than commercial carriers, and there's already hard data out there to back it up.

Excellent post, Raine!

This is a major story. I was among the people discussing it on the Progressive Knights of the Round Table program on Roots Up Radio Saturday night. We noted that we had already seen several signs of a fraudulent election -- results that do not jibe with polling, cutting off of communications, Mousavi's house arrest, and a crackdown on protests.

The guest on Thom Hartmann's show made several points that I agree with. We must encourage an examination of the results, but foreign endorsement of Mousavi may do more harm than good. I also concur that the demographic trends are against the conservative elements.

Time will tell what happens next. However, I hope that we will not see the will of the Iranian people thwarted by old men desperately clinging to power.

One confirmed Dead from the AP:

Gunmen have fired on opposition protesters at a massive march over alleged election fraud, killing at least one person.

An Associated Press photographer saw one person shot dead and several others who appear seriously wounded in Tehran's Azadi Square. The shooting came from a compound for volunteer militia linked to Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard.

Out of sorts today.....has the government of Iran fallen yet?

Also having flashbacks. This sure does remind me of the Philippines, when Marcos fell.

The key is going to be the Revolutionary Council; if the Imams don't believe the results, Ahmidinijad is finished. The question is, do they go back to a Khomeni-style theocracy, or does the revolution go full-bore?
