Good Morning.

Despite a tumultuous week here in Boston, I've got nothing this morning. (Besides, aren't you all tired of Boston-Centric blogs by now?) Yes, the President threw gasoline on what should have been nothing more than a local footnote. Yes, he's trying to make it better now. (Compare and contrast to the previous guy, BTW.) So.....even though I'm here essentially at ground zero, I think I'll leave it alone.

Instead...let's revisit a topic that's near and dear to most of us. Adult Beverages.

We've blogged about this before. The last few times we've needed information about how to set up a home bar, or a couple of freestanding 'drinking game' blogs for various political events.

But let's get personal today. Everyone must have a favorite drink or brand or place that you keep going back to again and again. Here's some of my faves.

VODKA - far and away my number one drink. I well remember my first real taste of the stuff. I was a senior at ol' Saugus High School, and we had gone out Thanksgiving morning for the usual Turkey Day football thrashing at the hands of the mighty Tanners. This year was no exception, and the weather was just as cold and bitter as the fans. At halftime, I followed my friend Bing out to his car with some of his buddies, and they had two bottles of Smirnoff under the back seat. I've been drinking the stuff ever since.

But recently, I've noticed that I've been liking it less and less. For years, I used to drink about one gin martini per annum, primarily to remind myself why I don't. I used to think it tasted like lighter fluid, but now I find it's the vodka that's starting to taste that way. Changing tastes, I suppose. I have a bottle of Svedka in the house right now, but I also cycle through Sobieski, Stolichnaya, and Smirnoff when the mood strikes me.

BRANDY - Ah, I thank ol' pops for this one. He's always got a bottle of brandy in the house, and I'm no exception. Whether you've got music on, friends over for dinner, or just need to unwind after a busy day, this is your drink. And it's absolutely required if you're going to sit out back and smoke a cigar; either one alone is somehow lacking. I could spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on a bottle of it, but fortunately my tastes in brandy run cheap. I prefer the Italian Stock 84, which I find to be quite smooth with a sweetish aftertaste, but I also cycle through Christian Brothers, E&J, St. Remy, Napoleon, and Courvosier (which I know is cognac and a different animal entirely.)

SCOTCH - What can I say? Perhaps the most beloved, widely-studied, most written about distilled beverage on Earth. I'm not talking about the mass-bottled, blended scotches we all know and probably drink. (Johnny Walker Black, in that regard.) Nay, single-malt is where it's at. On my "bucket list" is a visit to Scotland to do the whisky trail someday. For now, I'll have to satisfy myself with the mid-priced single malts. I've got a bottle of Bowmore, which is a fine scotch, but my preferred Islay is the Talisker....at about $95 a bottle the last time I priced it. Then there's Mclellan. It's priced far below the others, but it is a single-malt, and some tasters I know seem to like it. You'll have to look on the lower shelves for it, but it's pretty damn good to these taste buds. (especially the Islay, and this one does benefit greatly from a wee dram of water in the glass.)

There's more out there that I skip around to now and again. Two years ago, I made homemade eggnog for a Christmas party. I'm no fan of eggnog either, but I have a Colonial-era recipe that calls for rum, brandy, and bourbon in the mix, so we simply had to try it. As a result of that, I've been tasting around various bourbons (a drink I never cared for previously) and decided that I like Barbados rum but not Puerto Rican rum.

Lastly....there's Gin. As you well know, my mixed drink of choice is the Martini. I have a lengthy, 24-hour process to make one that I find acceptable. (documented elsewhere.) Of course, I always drink the vodka martini....but over the course of the last year, I've had more Gin than vodka. I don't know, I used to hate the stuff, but I suppose there's changing tastes at work as TriSec gets older.

The point of all this today? Well.....none, really. It's the middle of the summer. Aside from the gloom in New England, I hope everyone has been out and about and trying to do what you can to enjoy yourselves. Surely you need a drink while sitting in the sun?

But I digress.

Morning all!

Well, interesting blog today TriSec. You won't mind, I hope, that I only briefly skimmed it, as I do not imbibe the adult beverages. Though here is my no alcohol recommendation for an adult beverage: Maine Root (brand) Ginger Brew. Definitely not a kids drink!

That sounds fantastic VJ. I like you don't keep alcohol in the house, but for different reasons. You seen I never developed a taste for the hard stuff. I think it has something to do with Pappa Mondo's appalling taste in liquor. For as long as I can remember he has purchased not by brand but by price. To this day when I visit, I first stop my my local liquor store and buy up to case of the ABC brand vodka. I think that this stuff is made using a still that was once a radiator from a tractor used on a Soviet era collective farm. Which is how they market this poisonous swill as "vodka." My father is shocked that my brother's choice in bourbon is Maker's Mark and not some store bargain brand stuff. Sometimes you really need to pay for quality. I used to have a bottle of Laphroig single malt, Tri. Now, that, Sir was the drink of the gods. Peaty, smokey complex. Wonderful.

I was listening to "This American Life" the theme of the show was "The Fine Print." The intro to the show was about the infamous clause in Van Halen's contract rider about brown M&Ms. It turns out they weren't doing this to be dicks and prima donnas, they did to see if the promoter had actually read the entire document, so all of the technical, personnel, & safety requirements were being met by the promoter. The brown M&Ms acted as a canary in the coal mine.

Snopes on Van Halen's rider.

A belated good day to everyone. Been busy doing stuff. Now just taking care of a few loose ends before I leave for work.

Good day all

I drove the spousal unit to the Burlington Mall this morning for an interview after getting the Honda's annual inspection (still kicking without skipping a beat at 186K miles). I was sort of dreading having to deal with mall traffic because this is the last weekend before the end of the world - namely the increase of the MA sales tax from 5% to 6.25%. I don't know if I was surprised to find the mall relatively dead. Even the Natick Mall.....er...sorry....Collection was dead, used to be on Saturdays (before Bush scuttled the economy) the parking garages were full. Many empty storefronts, an empty store still occupies the spot where the Sharper Image used to stand just about a year ago. A big sign on the million $ condos (with condo fees higher that most mortgage payments) with a phone number to call in the vain task of trying to sell them, of course many are still unsold.

As far as my wife's interview, it was for an assistant manager's position at GameStop. The new manager there used to work at Sharper Image and knew that when my wife filled in for him the store ran like clockwork. So he wants her working with him again.

Now I'm outside and in a couple of hours I'll fire up the grill.

Late to the blog, because I was indulging in my favorite quaff: beer. My brew club had their annual "summer sizzle" group brew. We get together at one of the member's houses and brew beer and cook out on the grill. Of course - it's not just any brewing. The club has "Dorothy", which is a huge HERMS system for producing wort. It can hold 70 lbs of grain, and produce 30-40 gallons of wort. We all draw off at the same time, and then cook in our own kettles while eating burgers. Lots of fun. I made a dark raspberry Belgian ale that smells delicious.

But since this is about spirits...

Whisky and whiskey: I loves me some single malt scotch, particularly the smoky ones, like Lagavulin, Talisker, Bowmore, and Laphroaig. The less smoky ones are okay, but then you might as well drink regular whiskey.

Which I do, particularly Jamesons and Maker's Mark. Regardless, I prefer whiskey and whisky warm and straight up.

Tequila: Most people drink it to get drunk, and disguise the taste with lime & salt or frozen margaritas, but I like a good strong margarita on the rocks, where you can taste the tequila in it. I'll drink mezcale straight.

Gin: There's nothing like a refreshing gin & tonic with a squeeze of fresh lime when you're hot and thirsty. In particular, I like Tanqueray. I don't drink martinis very often, but when I do I prefer Bombay Saphire and a couple olives.

Cachaça: This is a Brazilian sugar cane liquor, similar to rum, but not in flavor. You shake it with squeezed lime, sugar, and ice to make a caipirinha . They are tasty, refreshing, dangerously easy to drink, and seductively lethal (just like Brazilian women).

Rum: I like the darker rums, because they have more of the caramel flavors. I prefer them in Caribbean-style fru-fru beach drinks.

Finally: I've also had Brenevin, which is the Icelandic liquor known as "the black death" (because the label is black). I find it quite tasty, with a flavor reminiscent of rye bread. It's impossible to find here in America.

Oh, poop. I was at the store all day; missed TR by a half mile.

We need to coordinate better.

ODS had a total meltdown this afternoon....did traffic on 128 suck, or what?

The good thing when I went to Boston is once I parked my car at the hotel, I wouldn't use it the whole time I was there. Strictly walking and public transit.

Didn't notice any problems, but I was home by 2PM. Which makes up for the mounds of suck 128 has been for afternoon commutes this week. I need Sunday to rest my clutch knee.

This trip was sprung on me Friday night.
