Lord of the Flies
Author: BobR    Date: 08/07/2009 12:29:48

"We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything."

"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!"

- from "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding

William Golding's first novel describes children descending into savagery on a remote island when left without adult supervision. It is a particularly grim indictment of human nature, describing how easily mob rule can overcome our civilized upbringing. It shows what people can do when fear guides their actions in the absence of reason.

I was reminded of this yesterday when I read the news of a town hall meeting on healthcare reform in Tampa, where emotions came to a boil and violence broke out. It certainly raises questions of "how did we get here?" and "where is this going?". It seems the crazies are coming out of the woodwork and getting louder.... and crazier. Is this some new breed of animal? I don't think so. I think they've been here all along. I think there's another explanation.

I remember very well the organized Republican political machine of the 80s. They worked hand in hand with the Moral Majority and Christian coalitions to reach out and mobilize voters for their regressive agenda. Their leaders gave simple directives and focused on simple issues, and their supporters toed the line.

After losing the presidency to Clinton in '94, they coarsened the debate. With Newt Gingrich at the helm (and later Tom DeLay), they belittled and dehumanized the opposition using carefully chosen words sent down from a very organized leadership.

In the 90s (and especially after 9/11), the leadership drove home the idea that the opposition (Democrats, liberals, and progressives) were not just misguided, but dangerous. We were painted as "terrorist-appeasers" and "the blame America first crowd". The word "liberal" was spit out with disdain, as if giving voice to it instantly created an oily foul residue on the tongue.

And then... the leadership evaporated.

There was very little of it left in the waning days of the Bush presidency, but it was gone after Barack Obama was elected. With no one left taking the helm in DC, the core that was left found themselves in disarray, like children on a deserted island. They initially tried to organize by selecting a leader for the RNC, but that didn't really help. The senior members of the party left in the House have tried to set the debate, but it's too civilized to satisfy the bloodlust that has been stirred up for the past two decades.

No, these people need a monster to fear, and absent one being presented from the leadership in DC, they are taking their cues from the media: Glen Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity... These are the people that are truly in charge (just ask RNC chief Michael Steele, who was forced to apologize to Limbaugh after making comments about him). These are the "Jack"s that are using fear of some ephemeral beast to manipulate their followers. The recent spate of hysterical protesters at town meetings are symptomatic of that.

Where this will end up remains to be seen, but recent events do not bode well. We've already seen churches shot up for being "liberal", and a physician killed for occasionally performing a controversial legal medical procedure. Yesterday's town hall meeting shows that the fear and loathing capable of roiling into violence is not just the purview of the truly mentally unstable. I fear that it will require the death of a "common citizen" at one of these meetings before they get the wake-up call they need.

There will always be those that are fearful of and angry at the world. They will lash out at those they perceive to be a threat. It does not serve our society well, however, to have ego-driven media celebrities manipulate them to assuage their own lust for power. Once they have put on their war paint and started chanting with the mob, only fear and anger will control their actions.

That descent into savagery has already begun. Will someone in the Republican party reverse the mob's course?... or will they worship at the altar of the Lord of the Flies, and sacrifice the lives of liberals to appease their false god?

Morning

These "mobs" scare me - I don't think I've ever seen such hatred.

I"ve been listening more and more to a song of the Dixie Chick that's really struck a cord with me

I Hope

Sunday morning, I heard the preacher say

Thou shall not kill

I don't wanna, hear nothin' else, about killin'

And that it's God's will

Cuz our children are watching us

They put their trust in us

They're gonna be like us

So let's learn from our history

And do it differently

CHORUS:

I hope

For love, joy and laughter

I hope

We'll have more than we'll ever need

I hope

We'll have more happy ever afters

I hope

We can all live more fearlessly

And we can lose all the pain and misery

I hope, I hope

Oh Rosie, her man he gets too rough

And all she can say, is he's a good man

He don't mean no harm

He was just brought up that way

But our children are watching us

They put their trust in us

They're gonna be like us

It's okay for us to disagree

We can work it out lovingly

For I hope

For love, joy and laughter

I hope

You'll have more than you'll ever need

I hope

You'll have more happy ever afters

I hope

And you can all live more fearlessly

And you can lose all your pain and misery

I hope, I hope

There must be a way to change what's going on

No, I don't have all the answers, but

I hope

For more love, more joy and laughter

I hope

you'll have more than you'll ever need

I hope

There'll be more happy ever afters

I hope

We can all live more fearlessly

And we can lose all the pain and misery, we can lose all the pain and misery

I hope, I hope

I hope

I hope

I hope

Good God, Bob.

I've been carrying the paperwork for an FID card around in my messenger bag since the 2004 election. I thought we were off the hook after last year, but maybe it's time to follow through?

What the heck is the deal with people pissing on Francona? Smoltz was pitching just fine thru the first three innings, hell he was better than Joba Chamberlain, yet the baseball gang on the bus to work today was like 'FRANCONA SUCKS HE LEFT SMOLTZ IN TOO LONG'.

Overall unemployment rate drops .1%?

Not enough for us to notice it unfortunately.. but perhaps a sign of better things to come.

So the unemployment rate dropped and what foes the Boner say?

"Today's unemployment report is yet another reminder that more spending, taxing, and borrowing does not mean more jobs for the American people. Instead of rewriting history on their 'stimulus' promises, Washington Democrats should abandon their job-killing agenda," said Boehner in a release. "Rather than pushing an increasingly unpopular government takeover of health care that will increase costs, drive up the deficit, raise taxes, and destroy jobs, Democratic leaders would be well-served to work with Republicans on real reforms that expand Americans' access to affordable health care and help small businesses create more jobs."

I think it's more an effect of people falling off the unemployment rolls, like my wife. She's been trying to call in for the benefits extension for the last 2 days to no avail.

I never knew the best way to save a marriage was to move out.
"I am so thankful for the overwhelming support and prayers we have received from people all across South Carolina. I am literally in awe of how blessed we are to have such love and support from family and friends, old and new. It is with this support, and after much careful and prayerful consideration, that I have decided to move back to our home in Charleston with our sons for the upcoming school year. From there, we will work to continue the process of healing our family. While we will be leaving Columbia, we will return often, and I will remain engaged in activities in my role as First Lady, acknowledging that my responsibilities to my family come first. Once again, when it comes to personal family matters like this, I respectfully ask that members of the media allow us to go on with our lives in peace."

Krugman today is hilarious..

There was a telling incident at a town hall held by Representative Gene Green, D-Tex. An activist turned to his fellow attendees and asked if they “oppose any form of socialized or government-run health care.” Nearly all did. Then Representative Green asked how many of those present were on Medicare. Almost half raised their hands.
