A Soldier's Thanksgiving
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/24/2009 11:37:08

Good Morning.

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

William H. Seward,
Secretary of State

In the middle of the Civil War, President Lincoln issued the above proclamation. Though there were two more hard years of war left, by then the Confederacy had reached the high water mark at Gettysburg, and the tide was slowly starting to turn. There was, perhaps, a glimmer of hope and something to be thankful for that year.

From Fort Sumter to Appomatox, the Civil War lasted 1, 458 days.

Today is our 2, 442nd day in Iraq.

Then, as now, the vast majority of Americans owe thanks to a relatively small percentage of the population and their families. While it is our soldiers that get all the honours, it is their families that are the true heroes; they suffer on in silence, often ignored by the mainstream media (and mainstream society) and they too 'soldier on' in what is essentially a closed society. Perhaps only another war widow knows what it's like to lose a spouse to conflict, or a buddy who has also been injured and is in a wheelchair alongside you in rehab.

It's that time of year when hopefully sensible people turn towards their families and pause to remember and truly give thanks for what we have and what we appreciate in our lives.

To that end, it's time for our annual "Ask a Vet" charity reminders.

And a bonus clicky that is the complete opposite of the front page.

Why be thankful for your family when you could join an orgy of American consumerism?

Dan Rea was talking about this last night on "Nightside" (8-midnite, WBZ 1030am. You might try to pick it up; the signal is audible in 28 states.)

I'm with him; even though I work in retail, this is too much.

Hello everyone.

Not quite sure the list should include 12:00am slots (Midnight)

Mainly because that isn't time you're spending time and being thankful with your family instead of shopping.

but some people are weird.

Morning Tri/Random/Mala!

So after two weeks, hours of heated wrangling with moronic, rude and sometimes downright off-topic lying from customer service reps, several phone calls to state agencies in Rhode Island and Texas, and a handful of emails, Citizens Bank decided to go beyond my request and refunded all $200 in overdraft fees they charged.

If their intent in doing this was to keep a customer, they failed. If it was to silence a critic, they failed even harder.

In the lengthy letter I received yesterday, they explained the entire process to me in detail. And those details are damning. I intend to send a copy of this letter, along with one of my own, to Sens. Reed & Whitehouse and Rep. Kennedy in the hopes that they will make sure that these abusive practices and insane fees receive some kind of regulation.

Great blog TriSec - I know I have plenty to be thankful for this holiday. I'll be sure to add the sacrifice of soldiers and their families to the list...

Quinto can easily walk now, I hope he does leave, it's been fun, and i like what they've done with Nathan/Sylar (God that sounds so strange saying it outlout) But yeah, he needs to die, and if Andrian has to leave...that's sad.

Course I feel bad for Mohinder...Woulda been cool if they had the cajones to kill him too (but Hiro would have found a way to save him.)

Good day everyone. I am finally getting my living space in order as some of my stuff including my HDTV and computer (except the printer and speakers) have been moved in. Of course I didn't get to bed until 4 AM last night due to a late shift at work and I got the call from the movers saying they were at the storage space at 8:15 AM and now I still have to get another surge protector/multi-outlet unit and a few things so I can finally have my bedroom in some order. Well, it's keeping me busy.
