The Christmas Budget
Author: TriSec    Date: 12/05/2009 12:02:19

There are only 20 days left until Christmas!!

Have you shopped yet? What did you buy me?

Well, I want a GPS, and a new video camera, a Wii, I need a new stereo for my car, and I could use a new storm parka, too.

What's that? We're going cheap this year? Oh, poop.

We're a year into the recession now. People may have put on a brave face last year and still shopped for the holidays, but this year there's a noticeable difference. You all know I work in retail. I was fortunate to be hired last year as a 'seasonal employee', and primarily by working my ass off, I managed to make the permanent list. (and who knew how necessary that was going to be this year?)

I've not been at this a long time, but even I can tell there's a difference from last season. The store has been busy, but not crazy. Weeknights, the store is dead. Budget is an interesting thing in retail; every day we have a sales goal. LL Bean might be doing better than other chains, but we're still not doing that great.

I read that over Thanksgiving weekend, retail sales were up slightly nationally over last year. Except in Massachusetts; sales were down 5%. We don't know if people are waiting, buying less, or just not buying at all.

Which brings me to our own personal budget. How much do you spend on Christmas in an average year? How much are you spending this year? In the past, we've often been extravagant with our seasonal purchases. We tend not to do big things throughout the year, so December is our "big bang". But not this year.

I made a point of buying an awful lot of stuff at the store this year (with my discount.) I've been really careful not to use the credit cards wherever possible. (I did twice, but that's it.) And those two credit card purchases were offset by days at the store. I even commented to one of my co-workers that I spent every penny I made one day....but at least I broke even.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

But finally, there's maybe a bigger indicator of how the budget is going in your neck of the woods. Does your hometown have some kind of annual holiday display, event, or other such thing? How did it go this year?

The City of Waltham (MA) has an enormous town green, like many places in New England do. Ever since we moved here, the city has lit many of the trees and had a big evening on the Friday after Thanksgiving with music, Santa, some booths of wares and giveaways, and other such things. It's usually quite festive.

This year, the Mayor cancelled everything. Oh, we had a brief "tree lighting" last night, but it was just a single 8-footer under the gazebo. The school choir sang four carols, a kid threw the switch, and we all went home.

I used to spend a pretty good amount at Christmas (correction: my ex-wife used to spend a fair amount at Christmas). A lot of it was on credit cards, which is yet another reason I ended up with a debt problem.

There are some areas where I won't cut back - I will always get a live tree, even if we're going to be traveling. I get some traditional goodies (boiled custard from Kroger, German stollen, etc.).

But the last several years money has been very tight, so we mostly made gifts. A couple years ago, everyone got a basket with homemade wine, pasta, sauce, foccacia, zucchini bread, and truffles.

This year, money is still a little tight, but we splurged on the mother-in-law's present, and got ourselves a new TV (and Raine a new laptop). We typically don't do much "under the tree" for ourselves. It just seems silly at this age.

We'll still have to see what we can get away with NOT spending, since we're supposed to be travelling to Atlanta for Christmas.

I am still thinking of my Christmas plans. They probably will be small scale. I will have to buy a Christmas gift for my new housemate and I'm not sure if I have to buy for the daughters since they will be over Christmas Day. And the cat gets a stocking too. Since I have been on a tight budget this year but at least I have my extra holdiay money to splurge on. I guess the only thing I might splurge on for myself is a combined Sirius/XM Merge unit for the car or a Blu-Ray player. It's all up in the air.

OK....wha happened. I was typing and this stupid PC went and reloaded the page.

My wife and I don't really do a tree, we get stuff all year. The family is scaling back anyway, at Thanksgiving dinner we usually draw a name out of a hat to get a present for. So that makes all the kids and one grown-up. That didn't happen this year since just about each of us has been touched by layoffs. Don't even think we're doing anything at work this year either.

Our town (Millis) doesn't do too much at holiday time and I haven't been out at night to see if the lights are on yet. The neighboring town (Medfield) has no lights on yet and they're considered a fairly wealthy town.

One casualty of the season (but not for the reasons you think). Once an award winner on the Today Show for their Christmas display, the Meehan family's Millis Wonderland will not have a display this year. The conditions of the roads in the area (the Town of Millis closed one of the main access roads to the area) led them to cancel the display for safety reasons.

So this will have to do.

Our big story the other day here was that Hofstra (my old school) was pulling the plug on its football program due to poor attendance, lack of interest, and that would cost too much to make the school a viable NCAA team.

20 days to Christmas and I'm already baking cookies.

I so want a smoke, but it's snowing and I don't feel like standing outside for 45 minutes tonight.

Pfft.
