Going Nuts
Author: BobR    Date: 12/11/2009 12:28:31

By now, we've all become pretty inured to the grandstanding and faux outrage from politicians. It's annoying and counter-productive, but it seems to be part and parcel to the political process. Every once in a while though, there seems to be a perfect storm of mental midgetry and hypocritical hyperbole on the political stage. So today we look at some of these stories.

First up: We all know that - according to Republicans and teabaggers - ACORN is the scourge of America. They're responsible for everything wrong with America, if you believe the hype. On the other hand, acorns are simply a nut from the oak tree, and are often representative of fall. You can't convince US House Rep. Steve King (R-IA) though:
Were they acorn cookies, or ACORN cookies?

US House Rep. Steve King (R-IA) says it was the latter. The congressman known for being one of the most fierce opponents of the community organization ACORN was evidently shocked when he was served acorn-shaped chocolate cookies at the White House Christmas Ball Monday night.

(note: the picture at the link is hilarious...)

I hope he didn't eat any of those cookies - they were laced with communism!!

On the other side of the aisle, the ACLU is accusing the Obama administration of creating a "sweeping immunity doctrine for torturers":
The nation's pre-eminent civil rights organization ACLU on Thursday slammed President Obama for shielding the Bush administration from accountability for its "dangerous torture policy," and insisted that this "lack of transparency" severely threatens the future of constitutional liberty in the United States.

"The Bush administration constructed a legal framework for torture," Jameel Jaffer, Director of ACLU's National Security Project, said in a conference call with reporters. "Now the Obama administration is constructing a legal framework for impunity."

Oy (hey it's Hanukkah) - while I agree that pursuing justice for the tortured is important, he kind of has his hands full with the economy and health care. And should Obama really be meddling in the affairs of the justice department? Didn't we complain when Bush did that?

On a lighter note, it's become clear that Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) is a liberal elitist! He apparently fancies wine over eggnog, and merlot at that! Do all of his "Regular American" constituents know that he prefers a liberal elitist drink (they drink wine in France!) over good ole' American eggnog?

We'll close with a small bit of sanity amidst all this inanity: A majority of Americans favor taking the rich to help create jobs:
Americans want their government to create jobs through spending on public works, investments in alternative energy or skills training for the jobless.

They also want the deficit to come down. And most are ready to hand the bill to the wealthy.

A Bloomberg National Poll conducted Dec. 3-7 shows two- thirds of Americans favor taxing the rich to reduce the deficit.

Apparently, Americans are no longer buying the Reagan-era voodoo economics crap about letting the rich keep their money so they can trickle on the rest of us. Politicians may be acting out more stupidly, but at least the rest of us seem to be getting smarter...

or at least wiser to their games.

Oh btw, I can't deal with eggnog. I can't deal with merlot either tho so I've got a nice bottle of cabernet waiting at home this evening.

Merlot?? Cabernet??? I have a bottle of Peach wine on my desk, from a micro-winery just over in WV. Widely recognized by his peers in the region, and he will not sell the first bottle.

Personally, I prefer my mason jar, but there's not much left in it, and there's nobody I can find that makes anything near to what this is, anymore.

Good morning.

At least another good thing with the house besides the cat sleeping on my floor in the AM is that the heat is set just right and I don't have to run a portable heater like I did in the old apartment. It is freezing today which means I will have to warm the car up before I have to leave for work.

Comment by livingonli on 12/11/2009 16:47:35
It really is hard to listen to Momma on the local crappy AM here. Better get that router soon.

:scans blog: Raine, Segway is the motorized scooter thingy the 43rd president embarrassed himself on (Now in fairness, the balance thing on the Segway is a challenge, but a cheap shot at Bush is always in order). On the other hand, a segue is a seemingly seamless change in topics.

This post brought to you by Mondo, your local grammar and usage pain in the ass.

It's considered poor grammer to end a sentence with a preposition (and no - the parenthetical aside does not absolve the infraction).

Brought to you by the other grammer and usage pain in the ass...

Howdy folks!

Didn't our esteemed former state AG Scott Harshbarger just complete an in-depth review of ACORN and found nothing terribly amiss?

It's hateful around here today...we've got a howling wind out of the northwest bearing bitter fruit. (including some lake-effect snow from Lake Erie that made it all the way to the cape.)

It's fallen out of favor recently, but the old meteorological term was the "Montreal Express."

Why yes he did Tri. The report basically said nothing to see here, move along. ACORN has some issues with weak management that it is working on to correct.

Yesterday and last night were classic examples of Floridian thin bloodedness. I saw many person bundled up with hats, coats and gloves in the shockingly cold mid 50s freeze.

That is pretty much what Jermaine and Bret said. Along with the pain in the ass to write all the songs, the show scripts in New Zealand, then travel to NYC to film it.

Back for more....the boss has gone home early, and it's a quiet Friday.

So I am cautiously lurking this afternoon. I won't make it a regular thing, though.

In any case, got the scanner with me today (2 miles from KBOS), but it's quiet on the ATC front, too.

Cold? What know you of cold? We had 4º wind chill this am. It's better now.

I'm already sick of winter and it hasn't even started yet. If I had the money or could find a good job maybe I would move to a warmer climate. Although I don't know how long I could stand being deep in red state country.

Hi, everyone!

Good blog, BobR!!

I was out from 8 AM to 2 PM Central time getting the right number for a jobs program and checking on subbing with five school districts. I should be able to set things up but it will take a few weeks. (My brother does not seem happy about that but the schools do need to do the mandatory background checks and I need the right certificate for Indiana.)

Evening, folks!

Speaking of cookies, I'm making my all-time favorite Christmas cookie this evening.

It doesn't have a name, but it's chocolate and cloves...

THere are many flavors and smells associated with the holiday, but more than anything else, this is the one that says "Christmas time is here" to me.

There's going to be a high rate of attrition.
