You bet there's a double standard. Author: RaineDate:01/11/2010 13:48:31
So I wanted to talk a little bit about Harry Reid. Yesterday, we learned that while the President was running for office, he said Barack Obama was "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." This is according to a book titled Game Change, written by Mark Halperin (Time) and John Heilemann (New York magazine).
The comments, while insensitive, (and for some - offensive) were forgiven by the man that Senator Reid was talking about, Barack Obama. As he put it, the 'book is closed'. That didn't stop a lot of heads from exploding, especially a certain leader of the RNC, who called for the resignation of Reid.
“What’s interesting here is when Democrats get caught saying racist things, an apology is enough,” Mr. Steele said. “If that had been Mitch McConnell saying that about an African-American candidate for president of the United States,” Democrats would be “screaming for his head, very much as they were with Trent Lott.” Mr. McConnell is the Senate minority leader.
In 2002, Mr. Lott’s supportive comments about his Senate colleague Strom Thurmond’s long-ago segregationist candidacy for president led to Mr. Lott’s resignation as Republican majority leader, though he later returned to the leadership.
“I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him,” Mr. Lott had said. “We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either.”
I have news for Mr. Steele and others calling for his resignation by comparing this incident to Trent Lott. One thing is incredibly racially insensitive, the other embraces racism. There is a big difference between the two. Strom Thurmond ran on a segrationist platform and on the campaign plan remarked "all the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, our schools, our churches." [source]
When Steele and others call for Reids resignation, they are either blind to history, ignorant or even worse. It seems that they are using race and discussion thereof to further divide this nation. Personally, I think it is the latter. We saw it on the campaign trail during the initial Reverend Wright debacle and also when Hillary Clinton said herself '[..]he may have problems with getting the vote of Hard working White people.' (See the bonus link below for reference to how this attempted division was used.) Once again, I contend that these things were racially insensitive. Not a good thing, mind you, but a far cry from what Trent Lott said.
Then there is the hypcrisy of Mr. Steel himself, who earlier this week, suffering from another flairup of foot in mouth, stated:
"Our platform is one of the best political documents that's been written in the last 25 years," Steele told Hannity. "Honest injun on that. It speaks to some core conservative principles on the value of family, faith, life, economics. Those principles don't change."
Many consider that word to be as offensive as the "N" word. Once again, it's racially insensitive. It doesn't stop there with Steele. Earlier this year, he was taped saying this:
It's important to note that the question was about the inclusion about DIVERSITY in the GOP. Why is it that re-enforcing a stereotype seems to be alright for him, but saying something stupid (As Harry Reid did) and he calls for a resignation? I think that is a double standard.
Why didn't Mr. Steele call for the resignation of this woman?
My point is that there are serious issues to be discussed regarding what Harry Reid said. They could be productive discussions about race matters in this country. Instead, Republicans are using it as a way to exploit race and divide this nation. It's shameful, and damned near close to what Strom Thurmond wanted: a divided nation.
Racism isn't black and white, and neither are all the stupid things people sometimes say about race.

Harry Reid did not make a racist remark. He only spoke aloud what we all knew; and that is why most black people aren't offended by the comment. Sure, he could have used a term other than Negro, but he's of an older generation so I can forgive that. I don't believe Reid is a racist. On the other hand, if this same comment had been made by someone like Rush, it would sound racist - even though the premise would still be true.
The fact is - this country is not ready for a dark skinned President, male or female, that doesn't speak proper English.
What the majority of Republicans can't seem to 'get' is that their party seems to have a problem with people of color. That's why Foxx's "tar baby" comment made her sound like a Klanswoman but when John Kerry used it while we all cringed - we know he wasn't being a racist.

And here we have Blago opening up his stupid yap again.

We're just now getting over 8 years of a white man that couldn't speak proper English...

Personally, I don't think anyone who can't speak the American varient of English well should be President. We are supposed to have the best and the brightest act as our representation to the world and we've already see the differenece in how they react to the pResident and the President.

Afternoon, folks!
Ah, hypocrisy...thy name is Republican.
And speaking of double-standards, here's a little something from Blue Mass Group about that little Senate thing we've got going on next week.
(Sarah Palin on Levi Johnson's nude-but-not-full-frontal photo spread similar to Brown's: "I call that porn." Hat tip to alert commenter Janalfi. - promoted by Bob)
Cosmo dug through its archives and found naked pics of Scott Brown. It really doesn't bother me, but the fact that if Martha Coakley had done the same thing she never would have been elected to anything bothers the hell out of me.
Massive double standards still exist when it comes to women.

Good day everyone. Finally got past the server errors that were occurring.
I still remember in the one Chris Rock promo that aired on Comedy Central. How can they say the country is not ready for a black president? We just had a retarded one!
I just HAD to comment there. So this apparently takes her out of the running in 2012. I'll take that.
Unfortunately, I don't see it that way. At what point would she have to "quit" her stint at Fox to actually campaign? In the meantime lots of "Hannity and Palin" or other nonsense.
Poor ProducerChris. Lots of Right Wing World clips though. Could expand to 2 hours.

There's growing talk in some radio chat boards about what the future of Prog Talk in Boston is. Jeff Santos' lease on WWZN expires at the end of March and there's growing skepticism whether he can go another year with little or no ad income. It's unknown whether or not 'ZN even has the Arbitron PPM hardware installed so they can appear in the ratings book - the belief is that they don't.
Meanwhile at Clear Channel, it looks like the 50kW upgrade and switch to Rumba of Air America's previous outlet, WKOX, is not going well. There's an ad for a sales manager who's specialty is talk radio for WKOX's sister station, WXKS. These two stations used to simulcast Rumba, now that 'KOX is 50kW that's no longer legal, so the programming on one or the other needs to change. The rumor is that they're really looking to flip 'KOX back to talk. Of course, it could go conservative - using Premiere's ties to CC to take Limbaugh off of Entercom's WRKO - essentially killing it off then adding Hannity and the rest of the cons.
