Wednesday Science Roundup

As an occassional alternative to politics, we bring you some interesting science news for today...

First up: Are running shoes the problem when it comes to foot pain? A new study seems to indicate that:
Running shoes, decked out with the latest cushioning, motion control and arch support technologies, may not be as beneficial to your feet and joints as you might think.

A new study finds that running shoes, at least the kind currently on the market, may actually put more of a strain on your joints than if you were to run barefoot or even to walk in high-heeled shoes, and the increased pressure could lead to knee, hip and ankle damage. The scientists don't recommend ditching your high-tech sneaks, however, as going barefoot on man-made surfaces could also prove harmful,
[...]
The researchers found an increase in this torque for the knees, hips and ankles when the participants were wearing running shoes as compared with when they were running barefoot.

Hippies unite! I tend to go barefoot a lot, so I think I was ahead of the curve on this one...

Next, a new study indicates that genetically-modified corn may cause organ damage:
In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto's GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.

According to the study, which was summarized by Adam Shake at Twilight Earth, "Three varieties of Monsanto's GM corn - Mon 863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup® herbicide-absorbing NK 603 - were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities."

In the conclusion of the IJBS study, researchers wrote:

"Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted..."

How do you know if you are eating GM corn? You don't - that's the problem. As consumers, we have no option to choose, nor even the information available.

Finally, the Army is suspending its robotics program, so the wars of the future will indeed be fought by men:
The Army has informed Congress that it is terminating a robotic vehicle and an unmanned aircraft program that were once part of the Army’s largest modernization effort.

The move, which comes as the Pentagon prepares its 2011 budget request, highlights the Army’s need to pour money into technologies that military planners see as much more necessary to support soldiers deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.

The cancellation of the unmanned ground and air vehicle programs eviscerates what once was known as the Army’s Future Combat Systems. The once-ambitious $160 billion FCS was envisioned as a series of combat vehicles and unmanned systems linked through a software network, but has been whittled down to a few sensors and small unmanned systems.

So all those weird robotic things you see on YouTube may have taken their last steps.

That's all for today - just remember...

Science!

Only lucky for this cause I've been with the company for 15 years and in the only department that gets an incentive trip - I think my pouting wore them down

Good morning everyone.

Didn't sleep too well last night. Don't know why though.

Mike Malloy said last night that there is apparently a new campaign to get right-wing callers to call in to progressive talk shows which may explain some of the weird phone calls I've heard. Last night on Mark Thompson's Sirius-XM show he got a caller from what turned out to be a hard core Ayn Randian who was trying to pass himself off as a liberal.

Photos and video of the incident show Coakley aide Michael Meehan trying to help McCormack up.

A scuffle broke out as Meehan tried to block McCormack and determine if he was an operative of a rival campaign.

Coakley is seen ignoring McCormack.

I think this might be a bit of blowing things out of proportion from the Globe.

It isn't pretty, mind you -- but how is this playing dirty?

You can text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. Please pass this along far and wide.

Well, you're outside the bubble. The last debate was borderline rude, with personal attacks, Martha has unveiled a negative ad, and well...she's just rubbed me the wrong way this entire campaign.

Arrogant, holier-than-thou, and that whole "I'm already the Senator, the election is just a formality" attitude she's had since she announced. In short, she's acting like a Republican.

I'm confused here.. the guy's from a well-known con magazine, so she ignores his attempts to interview her and the aide blocks the harassment. Assume that much.

If you watch the video, at :10 he trips over while running up past everyone to catch up to her, and the aide helps him up. Then the guys continues to harass them. And they're accused of assaulting the guy?

but-- she isn't. You think she doesn't know the seat she is seeking to fill?

What was wrong with her ad? Was it not true? We have a dem who played the ad game the way they do, so tell me, why is that bad?

I saw the ad that Brown put his daughter up to renounce. Tell me one thing that was dirty about it.

Comment by TriSec on 01/13/2010 20:38:56
Well Raine, I don't know. Martha is playing the game just like they do, yes. That doesn't mean I have to like it.

It must be me. I really and truly don't like her. Unfortunately, she was the Chosen One, so the party apparatus got behind her early and none of the other candidates was really given a fair shake.

But of course, the entire campaign was what, an hour long? Maybe there's something to that; we complain that the looooooooong presidential campaigns suck, but we know what we're getting at the end of it. With a shorter campaign here, it's easy to say "ick", and with no alternative, uber-cynicism sets in right quick.

Gee, Crazy Uncle Chuckles says the earthquake in Haiti is because the Haitians made a pact with the Devil to get free of the French.

Pat Robertson seems to always find a way to exploit a tragedy and sink to a new low while doing so.

Great blog entry, BobR!!
