It's Getting Crazy Out There
Author: BobR    Date: 01/27/2010 13:47:04

There has been much speculation as to the meaning of the supposed end of the Mayan calendar in 2012. Some have taken that to mean that the world will self-destruct. Most rational people reject that as abject foolishness. Perhaps it means that society will self-destruct to the point that calendars are meaningless. The way things are going, it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Beginning with last year, it seems craziness has completely run rampant. Last year were all the Tea Parties, populated by racists, lunatics, and idiots, from the "10thers" to the "birthers" to the plain overt bigots. Naturally, it came to be common knowledge that these rallies were sponsored by FAUX News and health insurance operatives. The one I streamed (briefly) in Atlanta even had an insurance executive as one of its prominent speakers! They weren't even trying to hide it.

More recently, we have the earthquake in Haiti (made worse by the deplorable poverty resulting in poorly constructed buildings, and lack of government response due to corruption). We have liberals and progressives looking for every glass to be half empty (perhaps after 8 years of Bush, some are addicted to being outraged?). We have the Supreme Court approving of fascism.

What other craziness is out there?

The aforementioned FOX Noise was rated as "most trusted" in a recent poll. Yes, the network that was exposed by Paul Greenwald in "Outfoxed", the network that simply repeats GOP talking points (typos and all), the network that gives us Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and Michelle Malkin is the most trusted network??

This is the network that gave the ACORN pimp a forum to air his creative film-making with nary a critical eye. How does it fly, then, that the ACORN pimp was busted for trying to bug Mary Landrieu's (D-LA) office? To her credit, even Michelle Malkin is backpedaling on her support of him.

Did I just give props to Michelle Malkin??

On less humorous notes, we find that the war in Iraq has taken it's toll on our humanity in other ways. A new study reveals that 1/3 of all female soldiers admit they have been raped, and 71% have been sexually assaulted. That is horrible. Perhaps that's why certain people are against repealing DADT - they're afraid of being on the receiving end of that kind of sexual savagery.

The torture that was done in the name of "safety" is another blow to our humanity. It turns out that the much-repeated meme that waterboarding saved lives was based on a complete fabrication. The most noted source for this story invented it; he was not there when it happened.

As we try to broker some sort of tenuous peace between Shiites and Sunnis in Iraq, and between Israelis and Palestinians, other areas of the world are melting down. There has been artillary fire exchanged between north and south Korea, and the much ballyhooed peace agreement between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland seems to be on precarious ground as well.

Where will all of this lead us? Perhaps to another 1960s with massive social upheaval? As long as it doesn't include bell-bottoms, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Let's just hope society comes out the other side intact.

Oh. Thanks for the downer Bobber!

I am deeply pissed off about female soldiers being assaulted. No one should have to fear their fellow soldier or co-worker. I wish that more of them would speak up - and to the media. I wonder if they said something at FOX news if FOX would air it? Sorta a tree falling making a sound when no one is there scenario.

I am nervous about S/N Korea and that we may end up being involved in this if they carry on.

I am angry, VERY ANGRY at this asshat who lied (for his own gain it seems) about waterboarding.

But I am truly disturbed that BobR agree's with Michele Malkin!!!!!!

Morning all!

It doesn't surprise me that Michelle Malkin backtracked. She does so quite often - whether it's an actual or calculated backtrack is always another story tho.

WOW. Actually, he should be addressing that letter (if at all) to the freakin' POPE. As Haiti is mostly Catholic, hence the dearth of condoms.

Good morning, bloggers. Greetings from the cold shores of the Windy City!

Thanks for an interesting, if depressing, blog, BobR! This does seem to be a time of change, but I cannot tell if it is for good or ill.

For myself, I am busy researching places to apply to here in the Chicago area. (Not just school districts -- it looks like it will be a bleak year for teaching so I will spend most of my efforts on jobs related to teaching or where I can use some of my other skills.)

Afternoon, folks!

Bad day to celebrate the P-38's first flight, hmm? (Also the Apollo 1 fire, which fits right in.)

Can we stop saying that Haiti is a Catholic country? It is a nominally Catholic country at best. The CIA fact book on Haiti says about 50% practice the native religion of Voudon. Personally, I think the CIA under-estimated that number. Just like Cuba and the Dominican Republic the Orisha traditions are very strong in Haiti.

And tomorrow is STS-51L (aka the Challenger disaster), and Monday is the 7th anniversary of the STS-107 (Columbia) tragedy. This block of time is definitely a sad one for NASA, and astrodorks like me.

I'm with you on the av-dorkery there Clint.

In many ways, tomorrow is still more mournful and disturbing for me than 9-11. I can watch the 9-11 tapes with harsh resolve....I still can't watch the Challenger footage, and to this day I still get a chill at "Roger, go with throttle up"...

When Discovery launched back in '88, I can remember watching it at the student union in my college, and when it got to the MaxQ/throttle-up, I remember catching my breath and preparing for the worst. I really wish I could see another shuttle launch live before the program ends this year. I saw STS-7 (Sally Ride's first launch), and even though they apparently no longer let people get as close as my family was that day, it'd be great to be on the Cape and seeing that contrail rushing towards the heavens.

Comment by TriSec on 01/27/2010 21:36:24
I've only been in Florida for one launch...in the early 90s sometime, I think.

I saw it from 150 miles away, in West Palm Beach. Had it live on the radio at the time, and I was astonished to see the contrail pop up over the trees, even at that distance.

And I've only seen launches on TV.

So I can guess who here wishes they had the NASA Channel if they don't get it.

One of those "I'll do it someday" things for me... kept putting it off (actually, made plans to be there around a launch, and it got scrubbed).

Oh well...

I saw Discovery launch the Hubbel telescope from 3 miles away (?) The closest one can get without being family of the astronauts or dignitaries. I had a friend whose brother worked for NASA and a member of the launch team. It was............... AWESOME!! I could feel just as much as see it!!!

The technology is great, but ease of use.... no. Put it this way. If the iPad came first, I feel like we'd be very excited by the invention of the thin laptop. Imagine! An iPad that you can open up and has an actual keyboard and you can read or type in virtual privacy!!!
