This is the last blog of the year for me. By next Monday, we will be watching the 112th Congress being sworn in. Another year of politics will have begun. It certainly promises to be a year of many twists and turns.

One could clutch pearls and worry about what is going to happen regarding the House having a Republicans leadership and perhaps those concerns are well founded. One thing is clear, while they try to manage the national business, they are having a hard time managing the conservative movement. It's in disarray from nearly every conservative sector. George Allen, former Senator from Virginia is already facing an uphill battle. Why? George Allen faces 'a fight on his hands'. When I saw that headline, I thought it was wonderful that Senator Webb and the DSCC were getting a jump out on the messaging, and preparing for 2012. Then I read the article, and was I wrong indeed. This is coming from conservatives and the Tea Party.
For months, it appeared that former U.S. senator George Allen would have a clear path to the Republican nomination if he chose to try to reclaim his old job.

But in the summer, grumbling about his past began, culminating in a Web site outlining the reasons some fellow Republicans oppose him: He's too moderate. He's part of the establishment. He's partly to blame for the record spending and ballooning deficit in Washington.

By this month, no fewer than four Republicans billing themselves as more conservative than Allen were considering challenging him for the right to run against Sen. James Webb, if the Virginia Democrat seeks reelection.
Who needs Democratic opposition research when the Tea Party exists? The fissure in fiscal conservative circles is growing larger. I don't see the Tea Party rolling over with this issue, generally.

Then there is C-PAC, the annual conservative conference held each year. It's well known, and in the past has been well regarded by conservative circles. This year however, social conservatives have decided to re-ignite the culture wars. This time, against themselves.
... opposition remains to homosexuality remain strong among some conservatives. This week, two socially conservative groups, the Family Research Council and Concerned Women of America, announced that they are opting out of next year's CPAC because GOProud had been invited. The Family Research Council's Tom McClusky told far-right news website WorldNetDaily that part of the reason for the decision was CPAC's "movement away from conservative principles," as evidenced by the inclusion of GOProud.

WorldNetDaily, incidentally, has a dog in the fight: In August, conservative commentator Ann Coulter was dropped from its "Taking America Back National Conference" because of her participation in a GOProud event called "Homocon." The site's editor said Coulter "clearly does not recognize that the ideals to be espoused there simply do not include the radical and very 'unconservative' agenda represented by GOProud."

In addition to the Family Research Council and Concerned Women of America, the following conservative groups are declining to participate in CPAC partly over GOProud's inclusion, according to WorldNetDaily: The American Principles Project, American Values, Capital Research Center, the Center for Military Readiness, Liberty Counsel, and the National Organization for Marriage.
WorldNetDaily takes it a bit farther than the CBS link:
"By bringing in GOProud, CPAC was effectively saying moral opposition to homosexuality is no longer welcome in the conservative movement," said LaBarbera. "Would CPAC bring in an organization specifically devoted to promoting abortion and pretend it's conservative?" LaBarbera has formerly participated in CPAC, but said he may protest the conference this year.

"Shame on CPAC for defending the absurd proposition that one can be 'conservative' while embracing moral surrender – in this case the idea espoused by GOProud of the government granting 'rights' and benefits based on sinful sexual conduct long regarded as anathema to biblical and Judeo-Christian values," LaBarbera added.

"[ACU has] gone libertarian, that's their focus," said Mat Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, a public interest law firm. "Libertarianism is right on the economy, often wrong on national defense, and doesn't care about social conservatism. Libertarians only respect one leg of the Reagan revolution, and you can't stand for long on one leg."
That last paragraph is quite telling. The conservative movement doesn't seem to know which areas are more important to them. The infighting here is amazing. I know that the GOP House is going to try to make a lot of changes that will not be welcomed by liberals, but I suspect that the conservatives are going to have a lot of unpleasant things to say about that as well. They are going to try to manage this nation under a cloud of ideological chaos.

We on the left have a lot to do regarding getting our own house in order, as we have documented many times, yesterday being the latest. Maybe we should spend some time working on that, since the Conservatives really seem to be doing our work for us. We have a little free time on our hands.

Have a happy and safe New Year.
