Just when the Benghazi scandal was dying down, along came the controversies over the IRS investigating conservative groups and the Department of Justice obtaining the phone records of several AP reporters and editors. The former seems to have died down some with the resignation of the acting IRS commissioner (Why was there no formal commissioner? Ask Congress) and the AP scandal has likewise subsided.

Lest you think that this means the Obama presidency is scandal free - think again. The great patriotic heroes of the conservative movement have latched onto a new thing to blame on the President. This past week, the White House played host to the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. As part of the visit, both men appeared in the Rose Garden for a joint press conference. During the presser, it began to rain on those assembled, and a pair of Marines appeared at either leader's side and deployed umbrellas to shield them from the elements.

You would think this would be a non-issue. People get rained on all the time, and it would seem that a world leader would deserve to have some sort of protection. Not so fast there. In a time when the President's choices in NCAA tournament picks, leafy vegetables, and mustard are regarded as great controversies, the sight of a Marine shielding his Commander-in-Chief sent the conservosphere into sheer apoplexy.

Glenn Beck's "news" site, The Blaze, ran an article alleging that it was a violation of the Marines' uniform protocol for a male Marine to hold an umbrella, let alone use it to shield a blah another person. Another columnist declared that Marines are not valets and should not have to shield their President in inclement weather. Of course, this ignored the photographic evidence that shows that holding umbrellas for Presidents has been going on for a long time.

But those are just images. What do they have to do with anything? Of course, it's not a ridiculous controversy until Our Lady of the Sacred Derp, Sarah Palin, chimes in. And she did not disappoint (this time). She wrote a screed on Facebook comparing the controversy to Benghazi, and declared in a tweet that "Real Americans" hold their own umbrellas, which prompted a classic response:

Expect Darrell Issa to call for a congressional hearing on "Umbrellaghazi" next week.
