Morning Headlines
Author: clintster    Date: 01/23/2014 13:32:21

Good morning everybody. It's been a while since I've done this, and I was asked to sub in at the last minute, so please forgive me if I am a bit rusty. So, why don't we start off with a few headlines just for kicks?

*This morning we mark the passing of Canadian American innocence, as Justin Bieber has been arrested on charges of drag racing and DUI. After last week's egg-throwing kerfuffle, and in light of his increasingly erratic behavior, look for him to change his last name to "Lohan" in the near future.

*Richard Sherman finally took questions from the sports media yesterday concerning his post-game rant at the NFC Championship this past Sunday. In particular, he focused on the tendency for critics to label him a thug, saying:
“The only reason it bothers me is because it seems like it’s the accepted way of calling somebody the N-word nowadays,”

Sherman does have a point, regardless of one's opinion of his statements after the game. Too often, when a young person of color engages in activity that is upsetting to some, they are labeled a "thug". It seems to be most often applied to young African-American males, but the label has been extended to older African Americans as well, including the President. It appears that we have a way to go still before we reach the "post-racial America" that so many claim we have entered into.

*Sean Hannity is the latest poor, oppressed wealthy white man to threaten to take his ball and go home. A few days ago, in reaction to a statement by NY governor Andrew Cuomo that right-wing extremists were not welcome in his state, Hannity went on a pouting spree and declared that:

"I can’t wait to get out of here. I really can't. I don't want to pay their 10 percent state tax anymore. I live in the second-highest property-taxed county in the entire country in Nassau County. I can't wait to sell my house to somebody who wants it. I can't wait to pay no state income tax down in Florida or Texas."

Someone might want to tell Hannity that state property taxes are only slightly lower in Florida than they are in New York, and that Texas ranks third in the nation in property taxes as a percentage of home value. Then again, someone might have already gotten to him; he backtracked a little, claiming that he wouldn't do it "right now" since too many people depend on his show to make a living.

*And finally, in a clear demonstration that the GOP has its candidates deeply committed to outreach and expanding the big tent that they are historically known for, Illinois congressional candidate Susanne Atanus has declared that autism and dementia are God's punishment sent from God for LGBT tolerance and abortion rights.

“God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions,” she said. “Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.”

It should be noted that Atanus' opponent in the primary to challenge Democratic incumbent Jan Schakowsky is David Earl Williams III, a man with a protective order filed against him by a former girlfriend, and who has been ordered by a judge to undergo anger management therapy and a mental health assessment in relation to the protective order.

So... congratulations on your re-election Rep. Schakowsky.

What's up with you?
