Aquaman and other musings

Good Morning.

I've spent this past vacation week at home - we've done a great many things, which means I've been a little out of touch with the news this week. However, that doesn't mean I haven't been observing things. Being home with an almost 13-year-old means a lot of gaming talk and superhero talk, and we've been at our favorite whipping post...Aquaman!

Now, we all know that he's one of the founders of the Justice League, but after that what more can you add? We were even discussing super-villians, and I could only come up with one against our boy..."Black Manta". But I have many questions about our intrepid Aqua...Does he need to stay moist, or what happens when he dries out? This whole "Communicate with the Fishes" thing...can he talk to saltwater fish only, or freshwater too? What about whales, dolphins, and other such things...they're mammals. Do squids, crabs, lobsters, and snails also answer to Aquaman, or do they speak an entirely different language? This is becoming difficult to grasp now. And the big question, is our friend an air-breather or does he have gills? He must be an air-breather, since he spends an awful lot of time at the Hall of Justice making toast, but I digress.

A few more observations from our week...it's ironic that Georgia signed the "Welcome to Georgia, Have a Handgun!" legislation this week. We went to the marathon, Fenway Park, the Rhode Island state house, and the New England Aquarium this week. As is my custom, I had a small penknife in my pocket. We passed marathon security, but the gate man at Fenway gave my knife a good, hard look before waving me through. Of course I couldn't take it in the State House, but they were nice enough to hold it at security for me. And nobody even checked at the Aquarium. I imagine at Fulton County Stadium, the Atlanta State House, or even on board MARTA, should I be sporting a Glock on my hip, nobody would look askance at that.

Speaking of subways, I continue to be embarrassed by what our city presents as mass transit. We spent 3 days this week riding around...we had problems with the "Charlie Ticket" all 3 days. (automated fare collection). The trains were all running slow and very overcrowded, but worst of all the entire system is looking like fresh hell. We make a point of advertising that Boston has the oldest subway in America, and it sure looks it these days. 3 of the lines have newer cars, but the Orange Line has rolling stock that is approaching 40 years old and looking every bit of those years.

On the other hand, we rode Amtrak down to Providence on Wednesday....that was a smooth and efficient experience. From Boston, our train left exactly on time, and I was fairly amazed by how quickly we made it down to Rhode Island; I couldn't have driven there that fast. Later that afternoon, our return ride was only about 5 minutes late - not bad for a train coming 500 miles. Despite it being the Congressional budget outcast, the vintage rolling stock here was well-maintained and seemed to be in good shape. I couldn't see the motive power heading southbound, but coming home we were pulled by an AEM7 "Toaster" that was around 30 years old.

So anyway...maybe a bit wordier than I intended, but there was our week. It's back to work on Monday, and I would expect to be back "in touch" after that.
