The Volcano Rumbles
Author: BobR    Date: 12/14/2016 18:55:49

There's a seismic rumbling occurring in the political sphere of national and international politics. The shocking apparent win by Donald tRump in November was the beginning of it. There were warning signs prior to that, but everyone was so focused on emails and pussy-grabbing, that the more ominous stories got little attention.

Now that tRump has been building his Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the real horror of an impending tRump pResidency has caused people to look at this whole election exercise as more than a WWF match. Several of his picks have ties to Russia, giving weight to the allegations of Russian involvement in the election.

Everyone remembers the post-mortem of 9/11, and the intelligence "failure" that preceded it. The Bush Administration got a memo entitled Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US. That was ignored or given little weight by Dubya, and one month later, the towers fell. Given this history, it's curious and alarming that PE tRump is so cavalier about reading them. He's all but ignored them, claiming he needs to focus on the transition (as if national security wasn't a part of that).

One wonders whether he doesn't want to read about what Russia may be doing. Per all 17 of the U.S. Intelligence agencies, "Russia acted covertly in the latter stages of the presidential campaign to harm Hillary Clinton’s chances and promote Donald J. Trump". The tRump transition office is trying to discredit the report, and trying to discredit our intelligence agencies:
Mr. Trump's transition office issued a statement Friday evening reflecting the deep divisions that emerged between his campaign and the intelligence agencies over Russian meddling in the election. "These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction," the statement said. "The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It’s now time to move on and 'Make America Great Again.'"

Yes, those are same agencies that are creating the reports that tRump is determinedly not reading.

It's impossible to ask him about this, because tRump has cancelled all pressers until after the electoral college meets next Monday. He doesn't want to talk about the Russians helping him win, and he doesn't want to talk about his business dealings with Russia (as well as other conflicts-of-interest, like the tRump Hotel in DC).

It's impossible to tell where this is going. Mitch McConnell has finally agreed it must be looked into, and 54 electors have demanded to see the details of the Intelligence Agency's report on the Russian hacking. It's doubtful they will be able to convince enough of the Republican electors to change their vote, but it's possible. Their choice still needs to be ratified by the House, and it's unclear how much support tRump has there, vs a different Republican (selecting Clinton seems unlikely).

So with all of this going on, temperatures are rising, time is running out, and desperation is likely to lead to surprising choices. Will the volcano blow? We live in interesting times.
