Everyone to the lifeboats
Author: BobR    Date: 10/24/2008 12:28:56

With just over a week left in the campaign, the weirdness is really starting to kick in. The rats are fleeing the sinking ship, and the true supporters for the apparent loser are getting increasingly desperate. Every news item leaves the mind further agog.

The news yesterday that former Bush press secretary Scottie McClellan supports Obama was both shocking and banal. Everyone kind of assumed it, but it was surprising to hear him say it out loud. He joins Colin Powell in the "former Bushies for Obama" club.

What's even less surprising and yet still disgusting are the number of pundits that have carried water for the Bush Administration for so long who are seeing the writing on the wall and jumping on the Obama bandwagon:
Noted Bush-supporting former Trotskyite Christopher Hitchens has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president! In Slate today, the beloved British alcoholic raves about how Obama isn't a sad old man, like McCain...
[...]
Atlantic blogger Andrew Sullivan was once a very prominent, very influential conservative. As recently as last year, even as he largely abandoned Bush, he was still complimenting McCain. Now, not so much.

Times columnist David Brooks scarcely deserves to be called an intellectual, but as we're using that term strictly to mean "East Coast elitists who write about politics professionally" he'll have to do. This "I'm disappointed in McCain but he'll be a good president" column was but a prelude to Brooks' statement during an interview that Obama was a perceptive intellectual surrounded by impressive people and Sarah Palin is a cancer.

Christopher Buckley was hardly a doctrinaire conservative. As a satirical novelist and a smart-ass, one imagines he's not too pleased with the rise of creationist rubes in his beloved GOP...

The writer goes on to show how Charles Krauthammer and Ross Douthat are unimpressed with McCain, and grudgingly accept that Obama would be a good president.

But while those who need face time on the TV machine or column space in a magazine to earn a living have decided to follow their paychecks instead of their beliefs, the true believers are digging in. The story that will likely be the biggest over the next few days is the McCain campaign worker who claims that a scary negro mugged her and carved a "B" in her face:
This weird, hysterical story got the MONSTER GIANT THREE-DECK SIREN treatment on Drudge for part of the afternoon, and then it was mysteriously downgraded to a little link on the side. Maybe that’s because the original sensational claim was just a little too perfect (for McCain) to survive scrutiny: That this loyal 20-year-old McCain phone bank volunteer in (of course) Pennsylvania was robbed at an ATM last night because, uh, she had a McCain bumper sticker on her car, parked nearby we guess? So the liberal mugger negro took her sixty bucks and MUTILATED HER WITH A KNIFE.

Oh, and the mutilation was political, because the criminal Obama supporter CARVED A LETTER IN HER FACE!

B!

For “B”arack Obama, of course!

... and - of course - the "B" is backwards, as if someone had been looking in a mirror when doing the "carving" (and just how dull was that knife? It looks like it didn't even break the skin). Where's the swelling from the "beating"? Idiots have tried this ruse before, and the truth always comes out.

From the stupid to the downright scary, the Ohio Sec. of State office has been getting threats and cyber attacks:
Roberts spoke with Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who has had her official state website hacked and has even been receiving death threats. A Monday press release from Brunner's office stated, "In recent weeks, phone lines and e-mail channels have been barraged, even in the business filings section of the office, with menacing messages and even threats of harm or death. Last week, a suspicious package covered with threatening messages and containing an unidentified powder was mailed to the Secretary of State's office via the previous location of the Client Services Center."

"Veterans in my office ... said they've never seen anything like this," Brunner told Roberts. "It's very unfortunate. It seems like there's an effort to shake the confidence of voters."

Roberts noted that even though the Supreme Court said Brunner isn't required to make the lists of new registrations available to the GOP for possible challenges at polling places, Republicans have continued pressing for her to turn them over voluntarily.

Perhaps there's something in the Great Lakes water. A clerk in the elections office in Franklin, IN distributed letters calling Obama a "Black Hitler":
A Republican county election clerk distributed copies of an apparent chain letter referring to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama as a "young, black Adolf Hitler" to two employees but later told police she intended it to be a joke.

The employees, who had voted for Obama in Indiana's Democratic primary, discovered the letters at their desks after returning from Labor Day weekend, Deputy Sheriff Doug Cox said in a police report made public this week. One of the workers complained, and surveillance video showed Johnson County Clerk Jill Jackson placing an item one worker's desk at 5:27 p.m. on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, Cox said.

"She admitted to being responsible for the letter, but only did it as a joke," Cox said. Jackson told police she had intended to speak with the workers upon returning to work but forgot.
[...]
The letter does not mention Obama by name but makes references to his ties to a Chicago church whose pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, adheres to black liberation theology. It is heavy with racial references, criticizing the candidate's parentage with such comments as, "He is proud of his 'African heritage' (a father who got a white girl pregnant and deserted her)" and asking, "Where is the pride in his 'White heritage?'"

The unsigned letter urges readers to send it to everyone they know.

"The U.S. citizens are just not ready to give up their country to this young, black 'Adolf Hitler' with a smile, poor direction and absolutely no experience!" it said.

OH... It's a "joke"... HA-HA! NOW I get it... It's Republican humor - it's not supposed to be funny.

This is the crescendo folks, the final scene. Just over a week now for all the desperate crazies to get their last punches in, and all the opportunists to play Brutus and stab McCain in the back on the way to the lifeboats. We can take it, can't we?

Yes we can.
