My grandparents came from Europe before WWII.
My Maternal grandmother had 8 brothers and sisters. They were told by my great-grandparents to not speak English in their home, even if it was broken English.
My Mother was born in 1945, a few months before VE-Day. My father was born on the fourth of July a few years earlier. Both of them are first-generation Americans. After the end of the war, while the world learned of the Holocaust, the anti-German sentiment was understandably high in the United States. My grandparents were born in Germany. All four of them. I am of German descent (2nd generation). I am utterly appalled at what happened last night.
My maternal Grandparents were told to go back to where they came from. My father recalled as a child of being told the same thing in grade school. he was bullied because his parents were German.
Ilhan Omar is a wife, She is a mother. She is American and she is a member of Congress, This is her response after the Trump and his rally chanted: Send Her Back:You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
It can happen here, it IS happening here. The question is, can we stop it? Can we go back to the halcyon days when racists had shame?
