Still Waiting Author: TriSecDate:11/07/2020 11:11:11
With apologies to Prince.
All my friends tell me About the votes they've cast Can't they see what they're doing to me? It makes me feel so bad 'Cause I'm so alone And brokenhearted It ain't like the count is ended But more like it never started The President my friends rap about I keep anticipating I try so hard but don't you know, my patience is fading away, away
Still waiting I'm waiting for that win Still waiting I wish on every star above Still waiting Waiting for the Electoral College to come around Oh, love Waiting for the Count to come around
So we wait. Same as yesterday.
And Thursday.
And Wednesday.
No, I'm not advocating that we stop counting. Although if we did, we'd get the outcome we want right now. But I have stated for many years in this forum, it's yet another example of the further Balkanization of America.
We have 50 states. We also have 50 different election processes. Some "United States", eh? It matters little at the state level how we run elections in Florida, MA compared to actual Florida, but at the National Level there really needs to be some sort of common rule.
And so we continue to wait. Pennsylvania in particular is quite maddening - as Joe Santorsa said last night, local law prevented them from even opening the ballots until 7am on election day.
In contrast, Massachusetts was counting mail-in ballots "upon receipt". That meant that by election day, almost 19,000 ballots were already processed and counted in Waltham (out of 35,000 registered voters).
My final takeaway in all this though - people clearly want to vote. With the multitude of early voting and mail-in options this year, we had the highest turnout in over a century.
Maybe lining up on the same lone Tuesday in November is no longer the correct approach?
