The Beginning of the End

It's historic, it's depressing, it's infuriating... The first time anyone has faced a second impeachment in the history of our country got underway yesterday. Due to work obligations, I was only able to follow it in bits and pieces. The first day was simply an effort to get consensus on whether the impeachment trial would be allowed to go forward. Short answer: it was.

Long answer: It was a shit-show on the side of the defense. The prosecution (essentially - the democrats) opened with a horrific video showing the timeline of the defendant at his rally juxtaposed with the assault on the Capitol. Watching it was difficult, so much so that Ted Cruz kept his face buried in his phone the entire time (sarcasm). You'd expect that from schoolchildren or teenagers, but a seated senator in the middle of one of the most crucial trials in our country's history?

The defense was put on by a Mutt & Jeff of lawyerly incompetence. I guess they were the best that the defendant could get considering his credit rating with paid help. Everything they put forth was countered by the defense. The worst was when they took the words of constitutional expert Brian Kalt out of context and hung their entire argument on it. Brian Kalt was not pleased. The prosecution shredded this one too.

Another person who was not pleased? The defendant:
Former President Donald Trump was said to be "deeply unhappy" with the defense at his impeachment trial on Tuesday, according to CNN.

Multiple sources familiar with the former president's reactions told CNN that Trump was "borderline screaming" over his defense attorneys' performance Tuesday - the trial's first day - particularly taking issue with his attorney Bruce Castor Jr.'s rambling opening remarks.

In the end, the vote was essentially along party lines, although six Republicans also voted to allow the impeachment trial to continue (a simple majority was all that was needed). The real meat of it gets started today, although the opening salvo from the prosecution in the form of that video evidence was already pretty strong.

Grab your popcorn!
