The Final Four

It's 4 weeks until the midterm elections, and 2 years since TFG was booted from office. The effects of his 4 years in office, and contentious departure are still reverberating today. The Dumpster Fire is capitalizing on his own notoriety, holding rallies, while the consequences of his crimes continue to creep up on him. Yes, the arc of justice is long, and in this case seems to be extra-long, as we wait for some sort of punishing legal action to occur.

As expected, he's managed to get some lawyer to push his "Special Master" case to the SCOTUS, as yet another instance of his favorite delaying tactic. The DOJ hasn't yet agreed to hear the case, and the DOJ is arguing they shouldn't bother:
The DOJ said in their latest filing that Trump "has no plausible claims of ownership or privilege in the documents bearing classification markings" and said that he has never represented in court that he declassified any of the documents -- "much less supported such a representation with competent evidence."

[...]

"Most notably, applicant has not even attempted to explain how he is irreparably injured by the court of appeals' partial stay, which simply prevents disclosure of the documents bearing classification markings in the special-master review during the pendency of the government's expedited appeal," the DOJ's Tuesday filing stated.

The department said Trump "has no basis to demand special master review" of any classified documents.

Meanwhile, at one of his latest rallies, he tried the "yeah but what about..." defense, and it hasn't gone well:
Trump, who is accused of illegally stashing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, claimed at a rally that the elder Bush “took millions of documents to a former bowling alley and a former Chinese restaurant where they combined them. So they’re in a bowling alley slash Chinese restaurant.”

“They put them together,” Trump said, per The Daily Beast. “And it had a broken front door and broken windows. Other than that, it was quite secure.”

[...]

What is Trump talking about? In the 1990s, the National Archives and Records Administration rented space at a former bowling alley and adjacent restaurant in College Station, Texas, to curate old documents for a planned Bush library at Texas A&M University, The Independent reports.

CNN’s Daniel Dale hit Trump with a heavy fact-check, noting that the facility was secure and Bush didn’t take the documents there himself ? NARA did.

I'd say "oops", but you know his fervent followers don't care, and won't believe anything the "librul media" says.

Meanwhile, the Jan 06 committee will hold its final public hearing tomorrow night. They will be trying to tie up the loose ends with some new evidence, showing just how complicit TFG was:
The probably final public hearing of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol is expected to highlight newly obtained Secret Service records showing how President Donald Trump was repeatedly alerted to brewing violence that day, and he still sought to stoke the conflict, according to three people briefed on the records.

The committee plans to share in Thursday’s hearing new video footage and internal Secret Service emails that appear to corroborate parts of the most startling inside accounts of that day, said the people briefed, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal records

Hopefully, all of this will give voters pause, especially those in the middle/undecided camp. Is this what they want from their elected officials? This is who the GOP is now, as one can easily discern by the slate of MAGA candidates on ballots across the country. Here's hoping we choose clear-headed, intelligence over fear and loathing.
