The Midterm

Good Morning.

Early voting begins in this Commonwealth today. I am off Monday and Tuesday of next week, so I'll be able to be among the "early adopters" ahead of election day.

Fortunately, I live in a Commonwealth that does not go out of the way to restrict voter access. Mrs. TriSec has already mailed in an absentee ballot, and Javi should be getting his soon in Florida while away at Disney.

We were pretty loose with voting even before Covid, but since then you can request an absentee ballot at your own choosing. I have heard that some states restrict that access, and you need to have a valid reason to need one. Meanwhile, our early voting period here begins today and runs until November 4.

It's open for 8 hours a day, normal business hours, including Saturday and Sunday. It's in a central location in this city with plenty of parking. The method is slightly different; since I'm not voting in my actual precinct, they won't have the old-school printed registration books that Massachusetts still uses. I'll have to actually show an ID and they'll verify my information in the city database before handing me a ballot. Sounds fraud-proof to me.

But that's not my thought today.

It's more philosophical. We have a Trump Candidate in Massachusetts for Governor, Geoffrey Diehl (F-Fascist). He's getting his ass kicked by the Democrat Maura Healey. (Current AG), to the tune of a 20-point lead. We'll be staying blue. Most races here are actually unopposed; earlier this year, significant copy was written about the complete lack of viable GOP candidates. Perhaps because we're not batshit crazy?

I have been reading some of the news from other parts of the country with some alarm. The feeling among some professional pundits is that the Democrats will indeed lose the house, at which point in time, any progress made will grind to a halt. We'll instantly devolve into normal Republican tit-for-tat, with them opposing anything and everything "just because", while actively working to undo anything that was accomplished in the last two years.

I've also heard rumors of a retaliatory impeachment of President Biden, also "just because". I have actually been writing about this for quite some time - it always feels to me like we are one election away from the Union collapsing and some of the Several States parting company. We've been "two Americas" for many decades now, and at some point it has to come to a head.

Given our current state of oppositional governing today, we simply cannot continue down this road without significant consequences to these actions. Whether or not they are fatal to the Union still remains anyone's guess.
