The situation in Israel is dire. After launching a brutal terrorist attack on Israeli civilians, Hamas has been served the consequences of its actions. Israel - never one to limit their retaliations to "an eye for an eye" - has steamrolled the Gaza Strip crushing everything in its path.

As is the case with ALL wars, the civilians (on both sides of the conflict) are the ones to suffer. It doesn't help that Hamas hides among the civilians, using them as human shields. Still, the complete lack of precision in Israel's blunt force trauma on the entire region is making the rest of world queasy. We all want to support the victims of terrorism, but not necessarily like this.

Because of the gross destruction, the lack of concern for Gazian civilians, and the lack of aid an support of the innocent caught in the middle, the UN overwhelmingly voted for an immediate ceasefire:

The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday voted in favor of a nonbinding resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas, which is now in its third month.

Israel launched its military campaign against Hamas in retaliation for the militant group’s brutal Oct. 7 attack on Israel, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 240 were taken as hostages. Israel’s aggressive attacks have devastated the Gaza Strip, killing more than 18,000 people since the start of the war, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The mounting civilian death toll and increasingly dire conditions for those remaining in Gaza have fueled calls for a humanitarian ceasefire, including from the United Nations.

While the vote was almost completely in favor of a ceasefire, there were some countries who voted against it. The first two shouldn't be a surprise:

  • United States
  • Israel
  • Austria
  • Czechia
  • Guatemala
  • Liberia
  • Micronesia
  • Nauru
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Paraguay

While I agree that Hamas needs to be eliminated completely, that will never happen. Afghanistan is often referred to as the "graveyard of empires" because both Russia and the U.S. lost billions in treasure trying to bring them to heel. As long as there is one pro-Hamas person still alive when this conflict finally ends, that one person will regenerate and regrow the terrorist group, like leaving behind a single metastatic cancer cell after treatment.

Ultimately, we need to find a way for people to get along. This will require effort from both the Palestinians and the other Israelis. Considering the history of the region through the millennia, I am not confident it will ever happen.
