Good Morning.

Were you out there? I had an idea to see if any No Kings protests took place on or near any military bases this weekend, but I really couldn't find much about it.

Although you probably heard about the one at "The Villages" in Florida. I drove through it once, long ago...and it's as white, Republican, and dystopian as you can possibly imagine. So I guess that's something.

But did it do any good? Waving signs and chanting slogans is all well and good, but we must back it up with action. I took the time to look this past weekend...and while Presidents can be impeached, and local elections can be recalled - there is no provision to do so at the Federal level.

You might have heard of both of my Senators. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren. That's actually unusual; most senators do not have a national profile. Nevertheless, they allegedly carry the torch of those that sat in those chairs before them. We know recent history....but what of men like John Quincy Adams, Charles Sumner, Henry Cabot Lodge, or even Edward Brooke?

Legacies of revolution, abolitionism, civil rights, and a whole host of things that most Americans used to take for granted. All of it now under threat.

I'm afraid the current senators don't quite measure up.

At the height of the protests, Senator Warren introduced....a housing bill. And Senator Markey...had a bill passed about sea turtles.

Where is the outrage?

One of our previous senators, the aforementioned Charles Sumner, was assaulted on the Senate Floor during the runup to the civil war. He was nearly killed...and this Commonwealth left his seat vacant for a year, as the citizens at that time felt his empty seat spoke louder than any replacement could have.

How do our current senators measure up to that? Ed Markey was the target of a couple of lesser editorials published about him this weekend....one of which called him out as a hypocrite.

We never begrudged Senator Kennedy his longevity - he always did the work of the people, right up until he couldn't physically do it anymore.

Ed Markey has been in elected office since 1973. (I was 7.), and his legislative accomplishments are few and far-between.

Who is "politician for life" in this context?

There is a primary challenger, and you might have heard of him, too....Representative Seth Moulton. Since we don't have term limits, this is literally the only way.
