More about The Death Panels!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 08/16/2009 14:23:49

Isn't it exciting? YOU could have some government hack decide whether Grandma dies! (Why is it always "Grandma" seen as some sweet, fragile old women who has a wealth of home remedies and recipes that will die with her. It's never "Pedophile Uncle Bob" or "Raciest Skinhead Cousin Rick"... alas).

But I am ready for it. As I turn into "Grandma" sometime later this month (damn) - I await the government to decide my fate. Hell, I'd have a better chance fighting the government than my insurance company. Provided I can get/keep an insurance company, that is. Some of you may remember that Velveeta has had an issue with trying to secure and maintain private insurance.

I'd certainly have an easier time getting insurance through the Gov for my disabled partner who struggles daily with her health issues - and quite bravely I might add - than with a private company who only cares about profit. None of them "actually" turned down insurance for her, rather they offered to insure her for a mere $2,400 a month. That was our lowest quote.

So the fact that debts from medical expenses is the largest reason that Americans file for bankruptcy is not surprising to me. Who can afford to pay something like $2K a month on insurance that can deny you the very care that could save you. Not to mention continually turn down what they consider alternative care that often relieves pain (in the case of my partner) like acupuncture or massage.

And, the fact that our government already spends double-digit trillions per year on care for the uninsured - many who end up using the ER as their health care provider. i suppose we could save that money with the death panels, right?

One of the things that drives up the costs of health care, and in turn affects those that ususally do not have health care, is the problem of bad food. These problems go hand-in-hand. Working class communities have a high rate of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and the like, and they rarely have healthy places to purchase food. Go into any poor neighborhood and try to find a tomato or a head of romaine lettuce. See if you can find them organic. Ha. Don't waste your time. The only tomato or lettuce you'll find is on the top of a Big Mac or a Chik-Fil-a. Drowned in fatty oils and corn syrup.

One could almost think that it's a plot against the working poor. One could almost think that. Hmmm.

So I welcome the government, with or without the "death panels". Go ahead. The insurance companies and the fast food chains are killing us already. One thing I know I'll not miss once we decide: The stupid fucking commercials on my teevee!!! Go away already!!
