Come Clean

"...art can transcend pain." Roman Polanski spoke these words when he won the Oscar for Best Director for the emotional film "The Pianist" in 2003. Roman has long been one of my favorite directors, he and his movies are iconic and will be with us long after he's gone: Rosemary's Baby, Death and the Maiden, Chinatown, Tess and one of the films that got me interested in the study of film 1965's "Repulsion".

Roman has not set foot in the US or UK since his indictment of child rape in 1977. Last night, he was finally arrested for his crime.

The Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski has been taken into custody in Switzerland after travelling to collect an award at the Zurich film festival.

The festival organisers, who had been due to give the 76-year-old director a lifetime achievement award, did not give details of the arrest, but it is believed to be over a 31-year-old US arrest warrant. The director fled the US in 1978 after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

Polanski was detained by police yesterday as he travelled from France to Switzerland to receive his award.

A Zurich police spokesman, Stefan Oberlin, confirmed Polanski's arrest, but refused to provide more details because he said it was a matter for the Swiss justice ministry. A ministry spokesman, Guido Balmer, declined to comment.

In a statement, the festival organisers said they had "learned of his arrest with great dismay and sadness", but stressed that they would go ahead with a planned retrospective of his work and present the award on another date.

It is hard to like someone so much for there great art, or great work, but know that they have some heinous crime or have some sordid history attached to them. Roman is one of those for me. I love his films but hate that he probably is, a sexual predator - one of the lowest of the lows. A crime so disgusting and soul-killing that is, in my opinion, sometimes worse than murder.

So when he made that remark after winning the Oscar, I couldn't help but think, that "art transcending pain" could also apply to him and to his fans. If Roman could read this I would tell him: come clean. Admit what you did and make amends, even if that means jail. Certainly you've brought enough pain to those you've abused and to those of us who want to like you and want you to receive the honors that you deserve for your work. Admitting you did something wrong and making atonement is the greatest thing you can do for yourself as well as those you've victimized. So come on Roman. If you didn't do anything wrong, then fight. But if you did - then do the right thing.

PS: This advice goes for Dick Cheney, Rummy, Gonzo and a few more in the old Bush administration as well.

I leave you with a clip from Repulsion. This man can say so much with so little words. Amazing stuff:
