There are many people quoting a portion of the 14th Amendment as a way for the POTUS to circumvent the GOP-created Debt Ceiling crisis, specifically this portion:
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.
I'm not convinced that this idea is legal. It's easy to pick one or 2 sentences to bolster an opinion from the Constitution. That doesn't make it a bad thing, but I believe it is important to go beyond one or 2 sentences.

This is the entire section 4 of the 14th:
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any state shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.
Before I continue, I want to make it clear that I am not by any means shape or form, a constitutional scholar.

Voice of the People
Author: BobR    Date: 07/27/2011 12:44:45

Ask anyone what they think their greatest right is for having a voice in our country. Some may quote the First Amendment, saying its "freedom of speech", or "freedom of the press", or the right "peaceably to assemble" or "petition the government for a redress of grievances" (whether via phone, mail, or direct protest). I submit that the greatest right we have for speaking our voices is the right to vote.

What is both sad alarming, though, is the capriciousness with which that right is treated. How is it that states can deny someone this most basic right after being convicted of a felony, even after "paying their debt to society"? Where is that in the Constitution?

The Candidates, Part 6
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 2011-07-24 11:44:55

Yes, when we last left, Velveeta had skipped part 6 because we had to save that number for our favorite GOP/Tea candidate, Mrs. Marcus Bachmann. Six, because of course, as she has said behind closed doors, that is the circle of Hell reserved for those that did not vote for her Senate seat in the 6th district of Minnesota. Heretics all of them! Don’t they know that Michele has a direct line to her God? Oh, did you think is was because of the district she served? Silly you.

Hey everybody, watch this!

Good Morning!

Well, if it's an early Saturday blog, that can only mean one thing; I'm off to donate platelets! I missed my last appointment after Woodbadge, being deathly ill and all, so here's the makeup. If you've never donated before, why not give it a try? Especially on a weekend like this; you'll get to recline in air-conditioned splendor, watch a movie, and be tended by friendly Red Cross staff. Did I mention the air conditioning?

The Art of the Deal
Author: BobR    Date: 07/22/2011 12:58:34

With a fixed dealine quickly approaching, President Obama seems to be doing what he can to ensure that the debt ceiling is raised in time to avoid calamity, including floating a generous proposal yesterday. He had previously endorsed a plan by the Senate "Gang of Six". Both have been rejected by House Republicans because they include revenue increases. Yet they will likely have to accept a deal anyway. Let's take a look.

What more can be said about the Debt Ceiling negotiations. Yesterday there was hope that a deal could be made, until -- well Obama said it was interesting. Almost like magic, the GOP recoiled

The Budget Battle - Large and Small
Author: BobR    Date: 07/20/2011 12:40:20

The ongoing debt ceiling battle will apparently run right up to the wire. We have less than a week before economaggedon, and the partisan posturing is more apparent then ever. Finally there is movement beyond talking, but the most recent movement has more in common with bowel than budgetary reality.

So...have you ever had any problems getting an insurance claim paid? We all like to think that we have insurance to pay the bills, but of course the reality is that a for-profit insurance is exactly that; it's there to make money, and they do that best by not paying the bills. I was in that industry for a long time, and using all sorts of trickery and loopholes to get out of paying was something I was very good at. It even came home to roost once; I fought with a Florida hospital for over a year concerning an ER visit for young Javi...but thanks to my inside knowledge, I made them eat it and we were off the hook for any out-of-pocket expenses.
