Good Morning.

I got bupkis today.

During the week, I keep a scratchpad on my thumb drive, where I jot down interesting news stories or other ideas to expand into a Saturday blog.

This week was not one of those weeks.

I don't know if it's me, or the news cycle, or just the end of a long, hard, winter...but everything has taken on a certain sameness these last few weeks. There's still news, but hasn't it been the same every day?

Congressional Update
Author: BobR    Date: 03/04/2011 13:58:39

Most of the news coverage over the last couple weeks has been the ongoing labor battles in Wisconsin, Ohio, and other states. We've also been keeping an eye on the Middle East, particularly Libya. Because of this, the goings-on in the US Congress have mostly flown under the radar. Perhaps it's time we take a closer look.

Despite the House's "need" to take a week off as a funding crisis was looming, threatening a government shutdown, they are still focusing on trying to reduce the deficit. It seemed the Republicans were planning on doing the opposite of whatever Obama wanted, regardless of the consequences, but they finally came to their senses. So what else is going on in the Houses of Congress?

Ohio: Unions, Uterus' and Unequality
Author: Raine    Date: 03/03/2011 15:53:59

While a nation watches what is happening in Wisconsin, we should not forget what is happening in Ohio. It's not just that they are trying to strip public employees from the right to collective bargaining, they are attempting to take away the right to strike. Sadly it may already be too late.
While national attention has focused for weeks on a similar battle in Wisconsin, the vote, by 17-16 in Ohio's Republican-controlled Senate, virtually ensured that the Buckeye State will become the first to strip collective-bargaining rights from public employees as states grapple with recent gaping budget deficits.

The move is especially significant because Ohio is larger than Wisconsin, and like its fellow Midwestern state, is both a stronghold of public-sector labor unions and a swing state politically.

The bill now goes to the House, where the Republicans have a 59-40 majority. If approved, as expected, it will move for signature to Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who supports the bill.

Watch a right wing meme born, right before your eyes.
Author: Raine    Date: 03/02/2011 18:29:54

This is the kind of misinformation that frustrates the hell out of me. Blogs like this are a scourge upon all the decent and good ones out there.

The blog, Gateway Pundit, made the following claim:
Breaking Report: Wisconsin Republican Glenn Grothman was just mobbed by a group of union thugs.

Republican youth leader Josiah Cantrall reported that the Republican Senator was mobbed by union thugs as he approached the capitol today. He was held for several minutes and was forced to call for assistance. The whole incident was captured on camera – Am waiting for updates.

Taxes, Jobs, the Deficit, the Economy, and Everything

or: Why the Republicans are wrong about all of the above...(apologies to Douglas Adams)

There seem to be two schools of thought in Washington these days: Those that think that government intervention in the economy is the answer, and those that think it is the problem. Republicans have long held onto the belief (well - at least since the Reagan days) that if government stays out of the way of The Invisible Hand of The Free Market (cue heavenly chorus) then all of our problems in the economy will be resolved. The Democrats think that the problem with the free market is the human factor, with greed that results in monopolies and dubious ethical behavior. Let's dig a little deeper...

Ask a Vet
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/01/2011 11:36:56

Good Morning.

Today is our 2,904th day in Iraq, and our 3,432nd day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing wars, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4439
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 4300
Since Handover (6/29/04): 350
Since Obama Inauguration (1/20/09): 211
Since Operation New Dawn: 21

Other Coalition Troops - Iraq: 318
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,483
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 858
Contractor Employee Deaths - Iraq: 1,487
Journalists - Iraq : 348
Academics Killed - Iraq: 448

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through:

$1, 159, 162, 750, 000 .00

After years of uselessly butting our heads against the brick wall that is Afghanistan, it seems that some among us have finally learned the lesson. Never mind the historical sense; it's easy for you to look up what happened to Britain or Russia when they went there....so at least you can add the United States to that inglorious list. Nevertheless, in case you missed it on last Friday's TRMS here's the story.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 02/27/2011 15:45:58

Okay, MY super bowl.....

Tonight, for at least one night we can leave our worries - just for a moment - about all the craziness in the world and be entertained. That doesn't mean we won't be praying for all those who struggle for freedom in places like Libya and Egypt, or those digging out from devastation in New Zealand, or, our own here in America that are fighting tooth and nail for womens rights, workers rights, human rights.

Tonight we may pause, but we never stop fighting.

Let's have a look back at some of the past Oscar opening numbers. This is good to look at when some of today's morning shows get you too worked up. Scott Walker will be on MTP, and I don't want you throwing things at your TV

Cleaning out the drawer of the blog mind...
Author: TriSec    Date: 02/26/2011 14:26:31

Good Morning!

I've got a couple of snippets of ideas today, not really enough to make a blog out of, but stitched together they will bulk out the morning. Of course, I offer the usual apologies to Bob Ryan....from whom I shamelessly steal this theme from time to time.
