Adieu 22
Author: Raine    Date: 12/29/2022 13:55:43

I'll let all those who have more resources come up with their lists of the best and the worst ofs.

Yet, despite it all, we got through another year. In just a few days, we can start anew, as they say.

Changes
Author: BobR    Date: 12/28/2022 14:04:37

If there's one thing that never changes, it's that change always happens. Norms, styles, technology, attitudes... like the weather, there's an unpredictable level of chaos that keeps our zeitgeist swirling and transmogrifying. A butterfly flaps its wings in China, and a new medical discovery is announced in the U.S.

If you, dear reader, are wondering what prompted this muse, it was my Washington Post on Sunday. We subscribe to the actual paper because I prefer reading the articles and seeing the pictures in a format that can never be matched by technology on the comfort of my couch (or front porch with a cup of coffee on a lovely spring morning). We also like to keep the people who work the printing presses employed.

The War & Christmas
Author: Raine    Date: 12/26/2022 13:30:14

It started almost two decades ago, with a segment on Bill O'reilly's show, titled "Christmas Under Seige". It was war. Conservative punditry decided to lean into the idea that this idea they wanted society to rally around: fake war to own the libs.

Pay Up
Author: Raine    Date: 12/22/2022 14:01:52

“Totalitarianism is once again threatening to sweep around the globe and President Volodymyr Zelensky stands on the front lines in the fight for democracy. Zelensky’s visit to America will strengthen the critical partnership between the two countries in this existential fight. Ukraine must be given the resources and funding support necessary to stand strong in the face of the larger Russian force.

“For nearly 250 years, the cause of freedom has been a cornerstone of the United States’ identity. The reaction by powerful MAGA voices in the Republican Party to criticize the visit and work at flipping U.S. support towards Russia is reckless and morally bankrupt. The GOP is no longer a party that supports democracy and individual freedom; it is enamored with authoritarianism and strongmen like Vladimir Putin because they have become blinded by the lure of governing by personality and fame. Like Putin, the MAGA GOP wants to stifle dissent, strangle their opposition, and consolidate power in the hands of their chosen few.

“Today is a reminder that preserving democracy is a global effort that requires sacrifice and vigilance. Let all Americans be inspired by the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people and use President Zelensky’s visit as an opportunity for the United States to renew its commitment to our own democratic institutions.”

Holiday Musings
Author: BobR    Date: 12/21/2022 13:49:41

It's just a few more days until Christmas. I may have missed it, but it appears the RWers have given up on the fake "War on Christmas" trope. Maybe it's because of TFG and his NFTs and the Jan 06 committee and Hunter Biden's laptop have taken all the news cycles. There's also the realization that most of the "Christmas" traditions (like the trees, Santa, mistletoe, even the date) are pagan in origin. Hell - the name "Yule" is being used right there in the open - didn't anyone look into it to see what that meant?
