But it's not just the military and veteran community that's suffering. Texas is a disaster of his own making. And I'm sure you could name the two states that are his favourite targets without much thought.
It's almost as if he's goading one or both to take dramatic action. While I can't speak for California, Massachusetts has been there before. I do not think this country will make it to the mid-terms as a single entity. Abraham Lincoln once observed -
A house divided against itself can not stand," he declared, "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved. I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of [fascism] will arrest the further spread of it, and put it in course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become alike lawfull in all the states, old, as well as new."
