Let's go back to pre-civil war because the republicans wanted to abolish Slavery? That party no longer exists. I don't see Democrats embracing the members of the South who left after the Civil Rights Act was passed in '64. Hell, LBJ said we'd lose the South for a generation. Civil rights were more important and he knew it.
