No Hope for Change
Author: BobR    Date: 04/14/2010 11:49:14

Six months ago, things looked pretty bleak for the Democrats. Town Hall meetings were exploding with astroturf protesters. Obama's "waterloo" seemed assured. The Tea Party movement (brought to you by FOX News, after these messages) was making a name for themselves (and the name was "teabaggers"). It was all going downhill. And then - Teddy Kennedy died and his seat was filled in a special election by - a Republican.

Somehow, though, Democrats still managed to get the dreaded health care bill through, passed and signed. As Obama declared after signing the bill, the sky didn't fall. Still - pundits everywhere were (and still are) declaring that Democrats will lose big in the November mid-term elections.

However, things aren't looking quite as bleak as the predictions have foretold. Yesterday, democrat Ted Deutch won a special election to fill the seat being vacated by Wexler. Republicans had hoped to pull another one from a Democrat, but it was not to be so. The pundits say it means nothing, but it shows that voters are not changing their allegiances as much as the pundits say (and Republicans hope).

And that big win with Scott Brown? He's not the lock-step marching Republican they'd hoped he'd be. He's helped the Democrats by preventing two filibusters so far, voting with the Dems on extending unemployment benefits, as well as the jobs bill in February. Perhaps there is hope for a change to bipartisanship after all.

Another Republican siding with the Democrats is retired Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM), who agrees that letting the Bush tax cuts expire would help reduce the deficit. Sure he tempered that with other cryptic comments, but he was in the Senate when the tax cuts were enacted; he was part of that machine.

What the pundits don't get is that the opposition to the healthcare bill was loud, but coming from a minority of Americans, most of them already solidly on the right side of center. There was concern, but not a lot of opposition from the center, which will dissipate as the truth about the law becomes known. Discontent from the left over the law's weaknesses will dissipate as well. Any voter discontent from progressives will come in the primaries as they support Democratic challengers to incumbents.

On top of that, there was yet another major score for Obama yesterday. He got 47 nations to pledge to a nuclear non-proliferation treaty, the first president to get that kind of consensus worldwide. This is huge. It will help prevent "loose nukes" from ending up in the hands of terrorists. It puts us on a path toward reversing the doomsday clock, so that everyone may breathe a little easier.

On the other hand, what do the Republicans (and others on the right) have going for them?

And finally - a straw poll by the SRLC shows the 2012 presidential front-runner to be... Mitt Romney?

How's that hopey-changey thing working out for the Republicans? Not so well. They can hope for change in November, but it's not looking good.

Good morning, bloggers!! BobR, thanks for an excellent post.

Before I go into the depth of your post, a slight correction. I think you meant to write [QuoteAnother Republican siding with the Democrats is retired Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM), who agrees that letting the Bush tax cuts expire would help reduce the deficit.

I think that much of the anger on the Left will dissipate, particularly if the health care bill is strengthened and other issues are addressed.

As for the GOP, I think that we are seeing an unraveling of the party. They had tremendous power under George W. Bush's presidency, but relatively few Americans benefited from it. So, this may explain why there are many former Republicans who call themselves independents.

Morning, comrades!

T-45 minutes to the teabaggers on the Common....

It's scheduled to run until 12:30. I'm planning on making a run to try to catch the tail end of the rally. (maybe it will run long.)

I think that will be more telling; how many people stayed for the bitter end, and how many "fair-weather" teabaggers will just show up for Sarah and then screw?

Check me on Facebook; I'll post what I can.

Oh, and reading one of the opener stories...

Wouldn't they NEED to sell condoms and porn, then?

They are all over the place trying to come up with a viable foothold to get back in power aren't they?

Speaking of child abuse, you all heard about this, right?

(CNN) -- Jurors in Portland, Oregon, awarded a former Boy Scout $1.4 million after finding Tuesday that the organization was negligent in allowing a Scout leader who was a sex offender to have contact with him.

The three-week trial ended with Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge John A. Wittmayer polling the jurors, who confirmed they had found the negligence contributed to damage to the plaintiff as claimed.

The jury ruled that the plaintiff is also entitled to punitive damages. That's to be determined beginning Tuesday in the trial's second phase.

How the Scouts handled the case of the former Scout leader, Timur Dykes, was at the center of the explosive lawsuit.

Attorney Kelly Clark, who has been representing six men suing the Scouts, would not discuss the case until after the punitive phase. Before the trial, he alleged that when his clients were boys during the 1980s, the organization knew that at least one of them had been abused by Dykes.

He also alleged that though Dykes was removed as a Scout leader, he was allowed to stay on as a volunteer and the abuse continued. CNN was not able to reach Dykes.

Clark produced documents that he said were part of an archive of previously secret Boy Scout files that chronicled decades of abuse of boys.

The Scouts' lawyers said the organization had not known about Dykes' record nor had it known about an outstanding warrant at the time.

Of course, that was the 80s...leadership standards were a little more lax at the time. I couldn't become Cubmaster without a CORI now. Although that exposes my issue with the CORI; if I haven't been arrested or charged with anything, it won't show up.

Morning all!

Here's another story related to this morning's bloggie that you might have missed - Gainesville FL has elected an openly gay Mayor!

Comment by TriSec on 04/14/2010 14:16:47
Interesting.....there's no radio coverage of this. WTKK has a personality there, but he's talking to the studio and I can hear the speeches behind him.

WRKO has got nothing....WBZ, WGBH, and WBUR (the big three news outlets) have nothing.

I won't listen to right-wing radio otherwise, so I guess it's back to Keith, since I can't stream anything here.

Comment by Scoopster on 04/14/2010 14:17:51
I bet they're covering it in detail on WEEI..

Then again not anymore the morning morons' show is done for the day.

'twas 98 years ago this evening at around 11:40 that a certain Royal Mail Steamer on the way to New York had a little "ice trouble".

Good morning everyone.

I think the key is voter turnout. If it turns out this year to be only a small loss for the Democrats or none at all will the M$M realize that the teabagger movement is just a small element of the right-wing fringe minority and finally dismiss them the way they dismissed the large anti-war protests during the Bush presidency.

Also, taxes are done and I got my ticket to go see Momma Saturday night. That show should be a blast.

I figured I was gonna walk in there today, have the guy take a look at my xrays, dope me up, cut me open, do what needs doing and sew me back up again. No such luck. I don't know what to think or feel.

Dunno if Dimwit Sarah said anything about tax day, but a good part of MA and RI got their filing deadlines extended to May 11 because of the flooding.

Anyway, I just purchased my bus tickets. My car repairs went a little more than I planned, but I think my mechanic was really saving me from myself. With my allergies starting to kick up, I don't really want to be driving. $74 is a good fare, I think. And the bus has wi-fi and power. New bus fleet.

Did Tri ever return.

No, he never returned.

And his fate is still unlearned.

He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston

He's the man who never returned.
