Rant. (And Breaking news)
Author: Raine    Date: 05/27/2010 12:34:06

Today I am going to rant. I've about lost my mind about this meme that the President isn't doing enough. It's disheartening that much of this meme is coming from the left. I'm also pretty really frustrated by hearing that if this were a Republican President we would be calling for their heads.

It's wrong, and here is why: It's a false frame. This isn't a right wing President. This isn't a guy who is breaking laws by leading our nation to war with lies. He isn't wiretapping its citizens. He isn't torturing people. He didn't give billions of dollars away to the banking industry. He didn't allow for the housing market to crumble. He didn't go AWOL when he was younger. He didn't choose the CEO of Halliburton as his Vice president who was then allowed to secretly craft this nation's energy policy. He's actually respecting our constitution. He's trying to re-regulate this nation. He got Health care reform passed. He pulled this nation back from the brink of economic collapse.

I am tired of the left treating OUR side the same way we treat them all in order to appear fair. Guess what -- it's politics -- this shit ain't fair. WE don't have to be fair if we are RIGHT. What is right is that this administration is doing everything it can in the face of this disaster. What isn't fair is that even our left wing heroes have decided to bow down to the meme that this administration is failing the country as the last administration did.

This President is not, nor EVER was, the kind of man to get up on a war carrier and claim "mission accomplished"

Obama was never the kind of man to stand up on top of the rubble after the worst terror attack in our nation since Pearl Harbor. Are these the type of images that people want from our current president?
http://readjack.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/bushgroundzero.jpg

How about Bush's response to Katrina? After we screamed and yelled, he finally went to Louisiana -- remember this?

After he left, so did the lights. It was all a show. I don't want a show now.

The term "No Drama Obama" didn't just come from no where. We elected a man who is not going to freak out. He is cool and calm under pressure. I think maybe some people are confusing leadership with a photo op.

So what do people want from this President? A response? There HAS been response. The president's biggest problem isn't really his -- it's the fact the the MEDIA has chosen to not report what is happening when it comes to this disaster. I do believe the Federal Government could have gotten ahead of the MMS mess 18 months ago - for that reason I think there should be serious scrutiny for Secretary Salazar. I don't know if it was purposeful ignorance or something that he meant to get to, but the MMS is just as responsible for this as BP at this point. I also believe that had Salazar done something about MMS, the damage was already done, in regards to what happened at the DeepWater Horizon Drill. The culture at MMS was allowed to happen under the previous administration. As far as MMS goes, it wasn't just the top brass there, it was also people who have been working there for decades who were not appointed by any administration. I know that Obama is in charge now -- but for people to be angry at this administration for not cleaning up the last administration's mess fast enough seem to be forgetting how big a mess was left behind.

I know people don't like to hear that our government is not equipped for a disaster of this magnitude. It's even more frustrating that so many on the left have been warning about this for years, even decades. That our military is unprepared to care for our own homeland is heartbreaking. I apologize if this makes me look like an Obama apologist, but if it does, so be it.

If we keep attacking our own like this, we can almost guarantee we will lose in November. Think about that alternative. There is a balance between bring critical and blaming someone, and I hope more people can try to be a little more nuanced about it. Otherwise we become as bad as what we see on the right. I know it isn't quite as black and white as that, but it's time for us to look at ourselves on the left. We need to be honest with ourselves and realize that yes, this is a horrible situation, but there are some good things happening with the response.

People have blamed this President of being arrogant and too passive. People have accused him of not doing enough and then trying to do too much. The Birthers attack him for not being a citizen, the teaparty calls him a socialist. The GOP leadership has called him thin skinned and uppity. The right is doing a fine enough job of trying to tear down this President. For those on the left to say we should do this as well with regards to the response in order to look fair is a false equivalent.

I'm scared for our country and for the Gulf. I know that everyone else is in our country as well. I suspect they are projecting their feeling on this President and administration. That's understandable considering we have more hope of getting answers and solutions from them than what we have gotten so far from BP.

When I'm busy and Nancy is busy with our mop cleaning up somebody else's mess –- we don't want somebody sitting back saying, you're not holding the mop the right way. Why don't you grab a mop, why don't you help
clean up." "Grab a mop –- let's get to work."
President Obama

It's hard to be patient when things are scary. Everyone seems to have a solution in times like these, and I think it's more than fair to ask the questions and try to find and suggest solutions. That's our responsibility as citizens of the United States. This is a disaster that's almost too big to comprehend. It's unprecedented in our history. These are terrifying times.

But it's exactly for times like these that we elected Barack Obama to lead this nation as President and not John McCain.

*******BREAKING UPDATE*******

Top Kill Halts Oil and Gas says Admiral

Engineers have succeeded in stopping the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government's top oil spill commander, Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The so-called "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers in Houston, has pumped enough drilling fluid to block all oil and gas from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well is very low, but persistent, he said.

Once engineers have reduced the well pressure to zero, they will begin to pump cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help that effort, he said, engineers are also pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.

I have to say I agree with this rant very much, I mean serious he's the President at some point there is nothing he can do but hold responible the people who did the damage. He's not a rig worker, he's not an owner of an oil company, he's has nothing to do with business wise with that industry.

He's not a superhero, he's not going to swim down and laser the leak shut with an all powerful green lantern type ring and magically make the oil disappear.

Its all going to take time to fix. Its going to take trusting in people we don't really trust.

and thanks Mala -- I fear that I may piss off people with this rant, but I've decided it's MY rant.

I'm fine with people disagreeing with me, but I just feel like this idea that he isn't doing enough is wrong.

MMS is a separate issue. Had the administration cleaned that department out earlier, I don;t think this catastrophe would have been prevented. This is what we were warning about for years -- our worst fears have been realized.

Morning folks....I'll have to cross-post this over to FB later. A friend from the store who is unfortunately differently-winged has been ranting about exactly this; what would we be saying if this was Bush?

In today's geek news, both Keith and Jim Hightower have used the word "pusillanimous" in their podcasts yesterday. My only previous experience with the term is from the Wizard's speech to the Scarecrow. Off to the dictionary!

And I am highly anticipating Rachel's podcast today....she's heloing out to the USS Iwo Jima to figure out how they do ATC on board. :swoon:

(BTW...so BP is shooting a heavy load into the hole?)

What the hell? From the breaking news story:

Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well has run out of the fluid, or "mud," and that a second ship is on the way. He said he was encouraged by the progress.

They don't have enough glop on hand????

Nope -- that is how big the hole was/is -- and apparently BP didn't bother to tell the Coast guard that as well.

I don;t even know what to say about hearing this. The guy believes he and his brothers helped pushed his sister to her death because of the things that were said.

Obama Extending the Drilling Moratorium

YES!!!

Ya know, I really believe that he gets a lot of flack for not having a knee jerk reaction or for not acting fast enough -- but so far, he's done the right thing.

And I think that will be the case with DADT as well.

Some updates from the "See? You should have elected me!!" department...

The Waltham School Department continues it's downflooding...the principal search for the Fitzgerald has failed; they've been through 60 candidates so far without success. The position has been reposted.

So, that's Fitzgerald, Plympton, and Stanley that are looking for new principals, plus an assistant Superintendant (this year) and the Superintendant (next year) that also need to be replaced.

All because there was a bullying incident in January that they tried to sweep under the rug; the media found out and it went national.

(Never mind that the buffoon that passes for the Super started out the year on the wrong foot by banning the President, which also got national attention.)

This spill is like the freakin' Energizer bunny.

(Reuters) - The amount of oil spilled by BP Plc's blown-out Gulf of Mexico well has eclipsed the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster, and could be flowing at a rate nearly four times BP's recent estimates, according to findings of a U.S. government expert panel released on Thursday.

On May 17, there were at least 130,000 barrels of oil on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, and a similar amount had been skimmed off the surface or evaporated, according to a panel of government scientists known as the Flow Rate Technical Group.

The findings, made public by U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt, confirm that more oil has been spilled from BP's leaking well than the estimated 257,000 barrels that fouled Alaska's Prince William Sound by the grounding of the Exxon Valdez tanker.

If the panel's calculations are accurate, a total of at least 260,000 barrels of oil had spilled into the ocean by May 17.

(BTW, is the "Flow Rate Technical Group" the best name for Geek Week, or what?)

Today, in the WSJ, Karl Rove called this Obama's Katrina--

No -- seriously.
But Karl Rove is doing his part to revive the narrative, prompting Alex Seitz-Wald to raise a good point.

Today in the Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove pens an op-ed titled: "Yes, the Gulf Spill is Obama's Katrina." He predictably places blame on Obama for a "lethargic," "slow," and "unacceptable" response to the BP oil spill. But the real significance of the op-ed is not what Rove has to say about Obama; rather, it's that Rove is implicitly acknowledging that Bush screwed up the response to Katrina. Rove is essentially trying to make the case that Obama mismanaged a disaster almost as terribly as he and Bush did.

This is breaking news because, for years, despite all the evidence to the contrary, Rove has defended his administration's disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina.

Exactly. Rove and Republicans invested heavily in the notion that the Bush/Cheney response to the Katrina disaster was perfectly admirable. The criticisms, they said, were groundless. Using Katrina as the basis for comparisons for failed government responses just wasn't fair.

And now Rove and other Republicans are accepting the premise.
