As I’ve said many times, we must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in. We can safely redeploy our combat brigades at a pace that would remove them in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 — two years from now, and more than seven years after the war began. After this redeployment, a residual force in Iraq would perform limited missions: going after any remnants of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, protecting American service members and, so long as the Iraqis make political progress, training Iraqi security forces. That would not be a precipitous withdrawal. Then-candidate, Barack Obama in a NYT Op-Ed; July 14, 2008

Last night much to my surprise, MSNBC showed the breaking news that the final combat troops were indeed leaving Iraq. Operation Iraqi Freedom has come to an end after 7 and a half years.

I know that this is far from over. I know that troops still remain there, but for this one brief moment, I take comfort knowing that this is finally coming to an end. There are no more combat troops in Iraq.
The 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, which left Iraq this week, was the final U.S. combat brigade to be pulled out of the country, fulfilling the Obama administration's pledge to end the U.S. combat mission by the end of August. About 50,000 U.S. troops will remain in Iraq, mainly as a training force.

"Operation Iraqi Freedom ends on your watch!" exclaimed Col. John Norris, the head of the brigade.

"Hooah!" the soldiers roared, using an Army battle cry.

Shortly before midnight Saturday, a group of infantrymen boarded Stryker fighting vehicles, left an increasingly sparse base behind and began scanning the sides of a desolate highway for bombs. For many veterans, including some who made the same trip in the opposite direction years ago under fire, it was a fitting way to exit.
[...]

By the end of this month, the United States will have six brigades in Iraq, by far its smallest footprint since the 2003 invasion. Those that remain are conventional combat brigades reconfigured slightly and rebranded "advise and assist brigades." The primary mission of those units and the roughly 4,500 U.S. special operations forces that will stay behind will be to train Iraqi troops. Under a bilateral agreement, all U.S. troops must be out of Iraq by Dec. 31, 2011.

Much can, will and should be debated about the plan to use more contractors to provide security. I'll leave it to our honor guard of Ask-A-Vet to do what he has done so well for the better part of this long and sad decade. The State Department will be taking over operations in October of 2011. This debate will rage on, but for now, just for today, our combat troops are coming home from Iraq. Promise kept.

Great blog, Raine! I was amazed and pleased by the news. Yet here is what I wrote in response to TriSec posting the news over at UNN.

I hope that this is a sign of better things to come.

So, in retrospect, I don't think this was a necessary war.

Many Americans gave Bush the benefit of the doubt, thinking that an American president would not lie about weapons of mass destruction -- or at least had some evidence to reveal after the invasion. Instead, the WMD program was non-existent save for a few old missile heads that were no longer dangerous.

The Lancet, a leading British medical journal, estimated some years ago that one million Iraqi civilians may have died during the war. Several million became refugees. Many thousands of U.S. and allied troops died or were wounded. So, while I am glad to see the troops leave Iraq, I know that this is far from over. As Raine said over at Four Freedoms, it won't be over in the U.S. till the last Iraq War Vet screams in his sleep for the last time as an old man.

It may not be over even then, considering the damage done by depleted uranium over many generations. (There are days when I wonder if we will have to eventually terraform Earth with all we are doing to the planet.)

a little bit about this:
On November 18, 1872, Anthony was arrested by a U.S. Deputy Marshal for voting illegally in the 1872 Presidential Election two weeks earlier. She had written to Stanton on the night of the election that she had "positively voted the Republican ticket—straight...". She was tried and convicted seven months later, despite the stirring and eloquent presentation of her arguments that the recently adopted Fourteenth Amendment, which guaranteed to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States" the privileges of citizenship, and which contained no gender qualification, gave women the constitutional right to vote in federal elections. Her trial took place at the Ontario County courthouse in Canandaigua, New York. The sentence was a fine, but not imprisonment; and true to her word in court, she never paid the penalty for the rest of her life. The trial gave Anthony the opportunity to spread her arguments to a wider audience than ever before.

This issue has been established, reclarified and even amended to represent the will of the people of the United States.

IF people REALLY want to revisit it, it is gonna take a long time.

you so silly

I wish there was a way to include them in the fun of holiday lights in our community - heck we have a decorating contest and I've even said you don't have to celebrate christmas to join in the fun - it would make me happy to see someone do what Fair Oaks mall does every year and put out a giant dredile(sp) and light up menorah. Do muslims have anything like that during December?

Muslim holidays are similar to the Jewish ones...they don't fall on set dates every year. The 'winter' holiday is Eid ul-Adha, which takes place around Thanksgiving this year.

It is Ramadan right now (The month of daytime fasting), and the big feast at the end of that is the major holiday, the Eid al-Fitr. It's September 10 this year, but watch for the Right's heads to explode in 2011....the feast day is September 11.

This is great. A friend shared it on Facebook.

From a blog called ProgressConservative.

As a YMCA member I pass a small dedicated prayer room every morning on my way to my locker. Afterall, the YMCA is a Christian organization, even though it is open to the public and I’m quite sure it hosts members of many faiths. Yet aside from a few bible quotes on the walls and the prayer room, you could hardly call the building a church. It’s much more of a community center with lots of room for exercise, a daycare and a some generic space for other actitivites. In fact, it is this model that the NYC building is based on. Having been a YMCA member for several years now and having met a lot of nice people from many races and backgrounds there, I think we should be welcoming, not condemning this construction. I’m also comforted by what I have read about the people who will be running the center. From Pamela K. Taylor at The Washington Post:

All of my concerns, however, were washed away when I found out recently just who is proposing the mosque — an organization led by fellow On Faith panelist Imam Feisal Rauf. Imam Rauf has a long track-record of interfaith cooperation and dialogue. His understanding of Islam is liberal, tolerant, pro-woman. I have no doubts that the center, as run by Imam Feisal, will not only serve the needs of the local Muslim community, but also be a forum for bringing people together, fostering healing between communities, and building bridges where the crimes of others have driven wedges between us.
There is more there, I suggest a read.

Media General (now Cox) was an interesting system since it had 120 channels in the pre-digital cable era. It was a big deal when my cable system went from 38 to 55 channels in 1993.
