Welcome to FourFreedomsBlog ver 3.0
Author: BobR    Date: 08/25/2010 03:03:14

FourFreedoms blog has been up and running for nearly 3 yrs now, and it's been starting to show. The overall look and feel has hardly changed since we started and we felt like it was time for a facelift. It was also time to make some useability adjustments, both for our members and casual visitors.

So - here is a list of the major changes:

Stylistic:
- Removed the various colored rounded-corner panels
- Cleaned up the graphics and menus
- Simplified the menu bar
- Lightened the overall shades of color blog-wide
- Changed the comment/blog edit box from white on dark blue to black on white
- Changed the quote boxes to blend better with the new look & feel

Functional:
- Got rid of unused and little used blog features, such as:
    - Polls
    - Advertisement panel
    - TrackBack panel
    - Forum link
- No more right-side panel, so blog makes better use of screen space
- Hiding/Showing blog and menus no longer refreshes entire screen (settings are saved in the background)
- Moved emoticons and audicons to be directly below edit box, so they are always there if you need them (in both cases, they are still the abreviated list, with the complete list still available via popup).
- Emoticons, Audicons, and edit buttons can all be easily and quickly hidden/shown
- When quoting a comment, it simply pops the quote into the edit box without refreshing the entire screen.
- Login and Search are now simple drop downs.
- Change password is now a popup screen
- Search now incorporates a weighted keyword table derived from the blog and comments, speeding the search process.
- Search results are now displayed in a "google"-type list
- When displaying a search result blog, the "search for" word is highlighted.
- Added user options for hiding YouTubes and Flash videos (for faster page loading), just like the "Hide Pictures" option did (displays them as links). And - it works correctly now.
- Added a security-level setting for blog posts, so they can be set to "members only" when necessary (such as for discussing member meetups, or personal details between members).
- The blog description and Fold are now required fields when creating/saving a new blog post.

We also added the Mission Statement and Rules of Conduct from the old Forum.

We put a lot of work into this to improve your FourFreedoms blog experience, but we're not perfect. These are known bugs that we're still trying to resolve:

- The ordered/unordered lists don't render correctly in blog posts (hence my using dashes for this post)
- In Internet Explorer, if you access the Set User Options screen, you cannot access the Change Password screen (and vice-versa) without refreshing the screen.
- The keywords table is not yet fully populated, so the search will not find newer blogs.
- Sometimes the screen doesn't "accordian" back from the "Share This" blog post drop down (noticed on Safari browser only).

Please let us know if you find other problems. We also plan on adding some other features in the near future, such as:

- Refresh comments without refreshing the entire page
- Edit a comment and save it, or delete a comment and only refresh the comments.
- WYSIWYG editor option for blog posts
- Caching-as-you-edit for blog posts, so you don't lose the whole blog if your browser crashes.

Enjoy!

Hmm, new blog smell!

Don't know if it means anything, but at home all the titles read "NaNaNaNaNaNa", but here at the office, I can see everything. Wonder if it's just a delay permeating through the intertubes?

In case anyone hasn't figured it out yet, the little arrows show and hide things, like the blog itself, the menus, and the editing stuff just below the comment box

Okay I don't know if I've told you guys about a big project I've been working on for my community or not but I want to share some good news

Because of all the hard work me and a member of, I guess I would call them a sister community, did last year we got awarded last November Community awards for our neighborhoods from the city of Manassas. Well, because of all that it got our neighborhoods noticed by the city and this year they offered us a huge project for May 2011.

We are going to be partcipating in the 1 By Youth project to help fix up our community! This is something they did for Georgetown South this past spring and its something that only happened in a handful of communities around the US. 1500 Volunteers spruce up community

There is also a chance of getting HGTV involved in the project too! Its going to be a long 8-9 months to fundrase and organize but I'm so excited that I wanted to share

And to be honest with out you guys and your wonderful friendship and support you helped me get out there to help my community - Thank you guys!

Is there a group hug emoticon somewhere cause I want that XD

Say, I'm going to be on the teevee again.

I was at the School Committee meeting last night, and ran into a couple of folks from last year's campaign...local media types.

I recorded a statement for WCAC (Waltham Channel) regarding my thoughts and concerns for the upcoming school year at the Fitz without a principal. I also met the local beat reporter for the Boston Globe, and she may write a local-interest story about the Cub Pack. (I'll have to chase her again about this.)

So...staying out there for next year!

Good morning, bloggers!

BobR, I like the look although it will take a little getting used to.

Raine, your last comment is based on the use of something called logic. As this is somewhat alien to several politicians and pundits, it is not surprising that they fail the tests of setting reasonable standards or being consistent.

So, perhaps a song is in order -- or would be if I could see how to add a YouTube video. Maybe I need to clear my cache?

Yes, there will be a niece of MLK there, at the beck Rally.

I believe her name is alicia.

Comment by wickedpam on 08/25/2010 14:59:34
I think the niece the caller was refering to was the one that came out against Correta Scott King and is anti-gay marriage

Comment by wickedpam on 08/25/2010 15:01:56
Alveda King - that's her name - she is going to be a keynote speaker for speck

Comment by Raine on 08/25/2010 15:02:53
Sorry it is Alveda King. Read this interesting tidbit

In Beck's defense, among luminary speakers like Sarah Palin and Beck himself, Dr. Alveda King--niece to MLK--will be providing some diversity top-cover as a guest speaker as well. But this King is a tad different than her relative when it comes to embracing diversity: she compared homosexuality to genocide, the logic being that if we all go gay, the world population will go to zero (because our current 6 billion number is dangerously low?). MLK she is not.

Comment by Raine on 08/25/2010 15:06:25
The only people corrupting Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy are the people that have the gall to show up at the Lincoln memorial Saturday

Comment by Will in Chicago on 08/25/2010 15:10:25
Raine, Alveda King is using the argument reducto ad absurdum. I have never met a homosexual person who ever wanted to convert people. I guess that we should hope that we are seeing the last stand of the crazy right wing before they eventually fade away as the dinosaurs did at the end of the Cretaceous.

ahhh, ok, I see....

Texas Republican and former House majority leader who resigned from Congress in June 2006 in a spectacular fall from political power, will not face federal corruption charges over his dealings with the disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

[...]

Mr. DeLay’s legal troubles are not yet over. He still faces a trial in Texas on unrelated state charges of money laundering and conspiracy in connection with campaign donations during the 2002 election. A trial on those charges, for which he was indicted in 2005, was delayed for years because of an appeal by co-defendants, but a hearing on pretrial motions is scheduled for next week.

In my job search, I am checking on publishing, government jobs, administrative jobs and teaching jobs (only a few more of those will open up before mid year.) A few friends advised me to also look in Phoenix, as they could help me find a place if I got a job. All I know is that looking for a job is an exhausting process, and I hope something opens up soon after years of looking for something better than substitute teaching.

yes - try clearing your cache first. Those values are the result of a javascript, so there may see some non-standard javascript settings/implementation on your browser

A friend said that her husband had trouble getting a teaching job as he has a Masters in Education. So, I may be overqualified for a lot of places. That is why I am checking mostly outside of my field, hoping that I will not be overqualified elsewhere. It is just so frustrating to put a good chunk of my life on hold while I try t get something that was once a given -- a decent job.

I will try to write a bit more and have something to work on for my blog over at UNN. I will post a link here when I have it up.

Comment by Will in Chicago on 08/25/2010 16:22:55
Here is a little something for everyone:

It t seems that the current leaders of the Republican party have NO problems about the extremists in their midst. They seem perfectly willing to use people that they might privately dismiss as kooks to coast their way to victory -- but I wonder at what cost.

EJ Dionne Jr of the Washington Post has a few thoughts on this in a recent column. Here is an excerpt..

[url]Why won't the GOP say 'no' to extremism?

By E.J. Dionne Jr.

Monday, August 23, 2010

n an election, a solid "no" usually beats an uneasy "yes, but." That's the heart of the problem Democrats and President Obama face this fall.

The advantage of saying no without equivocation is that a significant share of the electorate is usually ready to shout the word from the rooftops, especially when the economy is as bad as it is now. Both parties have regularly offered variations on George C. Wallace's brilliant slogan, "Send them a message." The catchphrase leaves voters free to define who "them" is and to fill in the message themselves.

Democrats know this, since the power of negative thinking won them back both houses of Congress in 2006. Their supporters swarmed the polls to say no to George W. Bush and the war in Iraq.

That's why identifying the GOP as "the party of no" won't do the Democrats as much good as they'd like to think. With more than a third of conservative Republicans declaring that our Christian president is a Muslim, just saying no to him is a more than adequate motivation to spend a few minutes with a ballot.

Quote by Raine:

I find it very disturbing that this attacker used a leatherman tool to try to kill the Taxi Driver.

From the TPM article

]According to Detective Marc Nell, at 6:12 pm last night, the driver picked up Michael Enright, 21, of Brewster, NY, at the intersection of 24th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The cab proceeded to drive north, and Enright asked the driver, who Nell identified as a 43-year-old Asian male, if he was Muslim. After the driver responded that he was, Enright allegedly stabbed him repeatedly with a Leatherman tool, according to police.

From the 9-11 commission report:

] Our best working hypothesis is that a number of the hijackers were carrying -- permissible under the regulations in place at the time -- permissible utility knives or pocket knives. One example of such a utility knife is displayed by Mr. Brinkley here, this so-called Leatherman item. We know that at least two knives like this were actually purchased by the hijackers and have not been found in the belongings the hijackers left behind. We are passing this around now. Please be careful, the blade is open. It locks into position. It is very sharp.

According to the guidelines as we understand them that existed on 9/11, if such a knife were discovered in the possession of an individual who alarmed either the walk through metal detector or the hand wand, the item would be returned to the owner and permitted to be carried on the aircraft. Once the hijackers were able to get through the checkpoints and board the plane, the last layer of defense was on board security. That layer was comprised of two main elements on 9/11, the presence of law enforcement on the flights and the so called Common Strategy for responding to in-flight security emergencies, including hijacking, which had been devised by the FAA in consultation with industry and law enforcement officials.

It probably is a coincidence, I just thought it was strange.

Raine, whenever hatred is stirred up, violence follows. We have seen political violence on the increase for the last few years in this country. We saw it with the Unitarian-Universalist church in Knoxville, increases in the number of hate crimes, and in plots against the President. I fear that we will see worse in the coming months.
