Hmm, new blog smell!
Don't know if it means anything, but at home all the titles read "NaNaNaNaNaNa", but here at the office, I can see everything. Wonder if it's just a delay permeating through the intertubes?

Good morning, bloggers!BobR, I like the look although it will take a little getting used to.Raine, your last comment is based on the use of something called logic. As this is somewhat alien to several politicians and pundits, it is not surprising that they fail the tests of setting reasonable standards or being consistent. So, perhaps a song is in order -- or would be if I could see how to add a YouTube video. Maybe I need to clear my cache?

In Beck's defense, among luminary speakers like Sarah Palin and Beck himself, Dr. Alveda King--niece to MLK--will be providing some diversity top-cover as a guest speaker as well. But this King is a tad different than her relative when it comes to embracing diversity: she compared homosexuality to genocide, the logic being that if we all go gay, the world population will go to zero (because our current 6 billion number is dangerously low?). MLK she is not.
Texas Republican and former House majority leader who resigned from Congress in June 2006 in a spectacular fall from political power, will not face federal corruption charges over his dealings with the disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Mr. DeLay’s legal troubles are not yet over. He still faces a trial in Texas on unrelated state charges of money laundering and conspiracy in connection with campaign donations during the 2002 election. A trial on those charges, for which he was indicted in 2005, was delayed for years because of an appeal by co-defendants, but a hearing on pretrial motions is scheduled for next week.

In my job search, I am checking on publishing, government jobs, administrative jobs and teaching jobs (only a few more of those will open up before mid year.) A few friends advised me to also look in Phoenix, as they could help me find a place if I got a job. All I know is that looking for a job is an exhausting process, and I hope something opens up soon after years of looking for something better than substitute teaching.

[url]Why won't the GOP say 'no' to extremism?
By E.J. Dionne Jr.
Monday, August 23, 2010
n an election, a solid "no" usually beats an uneasy "yes, but." That's the heart of the problem Democrats and President Obama face this fall.
The advantage of saying no without equivocation is that a significant share of the electorate is usually ready to shout the word from the rooftops, especially when the economy is as bad as it is now. Both parties have regularly offered variations on George C. Wallace's brilliant slogan, "Send them a message." The catchphrase leaves voters free to define who "them" is and to fill in the message themselves.
Democrats know this, since the power of negative thinking won them back both houses of Congress in 2006. Their supporters swarmed the polls to say no to George W. Bush and the war in Iraq.
That's why identifying the GOP as "the party of no" won't do the Democrats as much good as they'd like to think. With more than a third of conservative Republicans declaring that our Christian president is a Muslim, just saying no to him is a more than adequate motivation to spend a few minutes with a ballot.
Quote by Raine:
I find it very disturbing that this attacker used a leatherman tool to try to kill the Taxi Driver.
]According to Detective Marc Nell, at 6:12 pm last night, the driver picked up Michael Enright, 21, of Brewster, NY, at the intersection of 24th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The cab proceeded to drive north, and Enright asked the driver, who Nell identified as a 43-year-old Asian male, if he was Muslim. After the driver responded that he was, Enright allegedly stabbed him repeatedly with a Leatherman tool, according to police.
] Our best working hypothesis is that a number of the hijackers were carrying -- permissible under the regulations in place at the time -- permissible utility knives or pocket knives. One example of such a utility knife is displayed by Mr. Brinkley here, this so-called Leatherman item. We know that at least two knives like this were actually purchased by the hijackers and have not been found in the belongings the hijackers left behind. We are passing this around now. Please be careful, the blade is open. It locks into position. It is very sharp.
According to the guidelines as we understand them that existed on 9/11, if such a knife were discovered in the possession of an individual who alarmed either the walk through metal detector or the hand wand, the item would be returned to the owner and permitted to be carried on the aircraft. Once the hijackers were able to get through the checkpoints and board the plane, the last layer of defense was on board security. That layer was comprised of two main elements on 9/11, the presence of law enforcement on the flights and the so called Common Strategy for responding to in-flight security emergencies, including hijacking, which had been devised by the FAA in consultation with industry and law enforcement officials.
