Some stuff I found lying around

Good Morning!

Usually, I have an idea by Friday morning on what I might write about in this space. Not so this week....so I've got a wee touch of the writer's block. I certainly wasn't going to write about the "Not a Mosque Nontroversy", but since I heard the sound of more heads exploding this morning, I had to skim the internets.

The Muslim center planned near the site of the World Trade Center attack could qualify for tax-free financing, a spokesman for City Comptroller John Liu said on Friday, and Liu is willing to consider approving the public subsidy.

The Democratic comptroller's spokesman, Scott Sieber, said Liu supported the project. The center has sparked an intense debate over U.S. religious freedoms and the sanctity of the Trade Center site, where nearly 3,000 perished in the September 11, 2001 attack.

"If it turns out to be financially feasible and if they can demonstrate an ability to pay off the bonds and comply with the laws concerning tax-exempt financing, we'd certainly consider it," Sieber told Reuters.

Spokesmen for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor David Paterson and the Islamic center and were not immediately available.

The proposed center, two blocks from the Trade Center site in lower Manhattan, has caused a split between people who lost relatives and friends in the attack, as well as conservative politicians, and those who support the project. Among those who support it are the mayor, civic and religious groups, and some families of victims.

The mosque's backers hope to raise a total of $70 million in tax-exempt debt to build the center, according to the New York Times. Tax laws allow such funding for religiously affiliated non-profits if they can prove the facility will benefit the general public and their religious activities are funded separately.

Of course, I suppose I could say something about Beck's hateful rally today, but that's been done to death this week, too. Being a student of history has some advantages, but usually more drawbacks. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, and we've scarcely seen anyone more ignorant than Glenn Beck.

But it's not him; he's just crazy. What's really scary is the people that believe this stuff and will be out on the mall today. I'm hoping those aerial photos we usually see after such events show vast swatches of empty space around the Lincoln Memorial today.

Oh, there were primaries around some states this past week. Some interesting stuff happened, other things we expected to see. I suppose this one goes hand-in-hand with the hateful rally today. Are we ready for more McCarthyism? Our favorite asshat Sharron Angle believes there are domestic enemies in the Congress.

At least Nevada conservative Sharron Angle isn't a complete flip-flopper.

As Greg Sargent over at The Washington Post's Plum Line reported this week, when an interviewer suggested in 2009 suggested that there were "domestic enemies" in the US Congress, Nevada conservative Sharron Angle responded, "Yes. I think you're right." Now, that alone is quite an inflammatory statement, claiming elected lawmakers here in DC are actively threatening the safety of this country.

Well, as ThinkProgress points out today, Angle was given a second chance to weigh in on this domestic-enemies-in-Congress claim in an interview with conservative radio host Heidi Harris. Here's the exchange:

HEIDI HARRIS: He said that we have domestic enemies and he thinks some of them are in the walls of the Senate and Congress, and you agreed with him. Did you agree with him?

ANGLE: Well, we were talking about what’s going on in Congress, of course, and the policies that have come out of Congress, and those policies as we’ve all seen over the last 18 months have definitely hurt our country.

HARRIS: Yeah, well I agree with you by the way, but I wanted to make sure you got you a chance to clarify that, because I’ll tell you the truth, Sharron. I do think we actually do have folks in Congress who truly want to do us harm and see us change from the nation we are now.

ANGLE: There is no doubt that the policies that have been coming out in the last 18 months have injured us, and injured us most specifically here in Nevada.

So not only does Angle stand by her domestic enemies position, but she belives the problem is actually spreading! Harris, the transcript shows, agrees with Angle's position.

Whether or not she'll wave a list of 200 names in front of the cameras, or dust off the House Un-American Activities Committee remains unclear.

So, as we wind down this last week of summer (Back to school Wednesday!), let's be careful out there, hmm?

It is five years later, and I will try to write something up this weekend. (I want to get back to my fiction and non-fiction writing as a creative outlet.)

There is still work to do to repair areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina. I think we saw how inept government impacts human lives. Americans saw a city overwhelmed, and an entire region laid low from Louisiana to Alabama. I will have more to say later.

I'm watching the Three Stooges on IFC since it's more intelligent than the Beck con job on C-SPAN.
