Violent Elections
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/19/2010 10:48:56

Good morning bloggees! Velveeta has been called in to work...... that's right..... WORK! And, at this unGodly hour! The sun has the sense not to wake up this early.

So, as you can imagine, it's open blog. Though I pulled this from HuffPo as a topic:

Despite Taliban rocket strikes and bombings, Afghans voted for a new parliament, the first election since a fraud-marred presidential ballot last year cast doubt on the legitimacy of the embattled government.

As officials tally votes over the next few days, the real test begins: Afghans will have to decide whether to accept the results as legitimate despite a modest turnout and early evidence of fraud.

The Taliban had pledged to disrupt the vote and launched attacks starting with a rocket fired into the capital before dawn Saturday. The insurgent group followed with a series of morning rocket strikes that hit major cities just as people were going to the polls – or weighing whether to risk it.

At least 11 civilians and three police officers were killed, accoring to the Interior Ministry. The governor of Kandahar province survived a bombing as he drove between voting sites. In all, there were 33 bomb explosions and 63 rocket attacks, said Interior Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi. He said 27 Taliban were killed Saturday.

Just when I think we should be out of Afghanistan, this makes me think I might be wrong. I dunno. But I just hate, hate, hate seeing all this violence. And, women back in burkas.

I am always amazed at the strength and courage of the people that show up to vote no matter the threat to their personal safety. As far as burkas - I think women should have a choice as to whether they wish to wear them, no government or extremist group should dictate how women wish to live their lives (wait that sounds familiar).

Good job Velveeta- reminded me that voting can never be taken for granted, not finding a parking space does not constitute a hardship

Good mornin' bloggeristas and happy.. Sundee? (yes it's a rare weekend appearance, even rarer than my weekday appearances lately!)

Eagerly awaiting the start of the politalk show merry-go-round here.. but in the meantime I've been knee deep in video games lately. I'm trying to polish off some old titles that I never got the chance to finish back in the day before I get buried in the addictive deliciousness of the new Final Fantasy MMO next Thursday.

Good morning from the Windy City (or just outside of it), bloggers!

I think that democracy is important but I wonder what can be done for Afghanistan. It is going to take a lot of effort to try to broker a peace.

Just a blow-through.

I'm with Scoop; I've been wrestling with the Flight Sim for a day now. I was looking for a Trijet, mainly because the L1011 I had was a flying sack of crap. I've had a fascination with the Tupolev TU-154 for a while, and I found a nice-looking one out there. But the install failed and I got a corrupted file warning. I think I broke something; I did a full re-install and I'm still getting an error. So, the digging continues.

Greetings form the salt mine. Another early shift (not as early), and I won't be here until 2 AM. It might help if I can get out early tonight.

Well, good news on the flightsim front.

"Nightmare Airlines" is back in business. (coined by an old friend back in my FS98 days...when just about anything I flew wound up in a ditch.)

Found a sweet Embraer 145, flies like a fighter jet...and a vintage Lockheed L188 Electra in Eastern Airlines livery. Another 'big sitter" that flies better than the L1011 "flying sack of crap" that started all my troubles Friday night.

Even I am surprised although I think a lot of New Yorkers may be focused on the battle of the brothers Manning tonight.

Thought I'd share this. Ian was cleaning up his room and putting up his Presidential flash cards. He wanted to save this one, and ended up falling asleep holding it. :)
