Aiding and Abetting

Dissent is patriotic. Dissent is good for our country. Having participated in numerous protests myself, I know that it does wonders for the soul, and brings together people that might otherwise think they are lonely voices in the wild.

Since most politics in America splits down along party lines, one would think that the left would protest against the Republicans and the right would protest against the Democrats. That doesn't always seem to be the case anymore. Over the last year or two, it seems that in both cases the protesting is actually helping the other side.

The Tea Party "magically" came into being as soon as President Obama was sworn in (we'll not delve into the sordid history there). Initially, they put the full court press against the Democrats, especially with regards to the health care legislation. They also disrupted the town hall meetings of Republicans (some moderate, like Arlen Spector). The far-right Republicans gave them a forum; the moderates tried to reason with them.

By the time the last election rolled around, they were fielding candidates in Republican primaries, going against established or newer "party line" Republicans. In most of those races (e.g.: Delaware, Alaska, Nevada), they won the primary but lost the election, thus costing the Republicans control of the Senate. They actually helped the Democrats.

There is a noisy group on the left that is creating similar havoc for the Democrats. Most protests I hear from them focus on the Democrats, not the Republicans, and most of those focus on President Obama, rather than the Senate, which is where most of our legislative roadblocks and compromises occur. Rather than embolden the Democrats to push harder, they feed into the Republican narrative that the country is unhappy with the Democratic agenda. This festering disillusionment was likely the cause of lackluster voter turnout, which helped the Republicans make significant gains in the House and Senate.

So what's the answer? I'll reiterate my initial point that dissent is good for the country and good for the soul. But it must be directed properly. It should be directed at the root cause of the problems (in my mind - the Republicans; your view may differ), and should focus on the policies, rather than demonize the individual. For "Progressives", that means they should focus their ire on the Republican machine. They should protest against the Republicans and for liberal values.

If they continue to demonize President Obama, we may well end up with a Republican president in 2012. Take a lesson from the Tea Party and the 2010 elections - don't aid and abet the "enemy". Absolutely urge the politicians that most closely align with your values to do the right thing - just don't cut them down at the knees in the process.

Why WikiLeaks Is Unlike the Pentagon Papers

This is very much in line with what I have been trying to communicate regarding what Assange is doing. It's a very good read.

Personally, I find Assange kinda skeevy and rather the political (and I use that word loosly) Perez Hilton

Happy Birthday, Scoop!!!

I hope that everyone is doing well here and are enjoying the holiday season.

I had my interview for a position yesterday. I think it went well, but I don't think it will pay enough for me to get my own place. (That is a priority.) So, back to the job search after I run some errands and do some household chores.

I think that it is fine to offer criticism, but we must focus on issues instead of personalities. I think the President could have been a lot more forceful on many issues -- the stimulus, health care, Wall Street reform as examples. However, we have to provide a base for criticism and support. I think we need to have a progressive movement, much like the Civil Rights movement and other historic movements, that will be something that politicians can point to as a base for supporting more change. Perhaps we will have to make our politicians do it but rallying for the issues that we care about.

I also seem to recall a poll that showed many independents leaned towards the Republicans this time, and some debate over whether progressives stayed home.

I think that we need to have both the supporters of the President and his critics talk to each other. There have been accomplishments and disappointments. We have to avoid demonizing any side. (Demonization of any side in a debate worries me because I know what happens historically when people are portrayed as monsters.)

On a lighter note, we may hit 54 degrees here on Friday. Good thing that I did not put all the sweatshirts away.

*grunt*

I have just discovered that my home operating system is obsolete...we can't load or run a bunch of the new Xmas software. Looks like I have a New Year's weekend project.

(Upgrade OS vs. Smash computer with bat and buy a new one.)

Changing the rules of one of the Houses of Congress would require a 2/3 majority vote. And more than half their caucus would vote against this stupid rule change.

Hmmm I'm assuming you need XP or better? If the computer is that old then it probably needs replacing/retrofitting anyways (which I can do for ya!)

I had part of it rebuilt last year...and because of my flight sim, I've been tinkering around with memory and drivers anyway. It still runs just fine and has oodles of space on the ol' hard drive.

So.

One of the unintended consequences of the ol' Dvorak keyboard...I've been typing "Self-spay" for weeks, where I mean to type "Self-Pay". (manually rejecting claims.)

Anyway...

I think that there are a few politicians and pundits who perhaps should "self-spay".
