No that's not a typo in the title. Once again, friends, it's time to talk vagina. We've done it before here on this blog, when discussing sanctioned rape against women by contractors like KBR and Halliburton and rape of military women by contractors. We've discussed the names of senators who voted against stopping these acts of violence on women. These things are horrible enough on there own, but as Bob brought up in yesterdays blog, the GOP wants to take the act of rape and redefine it.

The broad anti-abortion measure would restrict federally-assisted abortion coverage to cases of "forcible rape," excluding in that definition instances where women are drugged and raped, where women say "no" but do not physically fight off the perpetrator, and various cases of date rape. It also excludes instances of statutory rape in which minors are impregnated by adults. The victim in all cases would be denied abortion coverage under Medicaid and forbidden from seeking health care tax benefits.

Introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), the bill boasts 173 mainly Republican co-sponsors and has been designated a top priority by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).
As Representative Wasserman Schultz rightfully says It really is -- to suggest that there is some kind of rape that would be okay to force a woman to carry the resulting pregnancy to term, and abandon the principle that has been long held, an exception that has been settled for 30 years, is to me a violent act against women in and of itself," [ ] "Rape is when a woman is forced to have sex against her will, and that is whether she is conscious, unconscious, mentally stable, not mentally stable."

This is what the GOP has deemed a top priority now that they are in the majority. Denying women and teens access to a procedure that is legal in this country for there own political agenda is more important to them than a jobs package or funding government. So why this? why now?

It's to make the Hyde Amendment permanent, and it's to further deteriorate medicaid among other things. From Wiki: The Hyde Amendment is a legislative provision barring the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortions. It is not a permanent law, rather it is a "rider" that, in various forms, has been routinely attached to annual appropriations bills since 1976. The Hyde Amendment applies only to funds allocated by the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services. It primarily affects Medicaid.

This bill however doesn't only affect medicaid and the less fortunate. From Mother Jones:
Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. (Smith's spokesman did not respond to a call and an email requesting comment.)

Given that the bill also would forbid the use of tax benefits to pay for abortions, that 13-year-old's parents wouldn't be allowed to use money from a tax-exempt health savings account (HSA) to pay for the procedure. They also wouldn't be able to deduct the cost of the abortion or the cost of any insurance that paid for it as a medical expense.
It also prevents employers from taking a tax deduction for offering an insurance plan that covered abortion.

It is an affront to me that the GOP would take 2 of the most difficult issues a woman should have to deal with and use it as political fodder. My body is not up for debate. No man in the world gets to define what I constitute as abuse. They can remove the word forcible from the bill, but it still doesn't change the spirit if what is happening here. This is no longer a wedge issue, it's reality. The GOP is once again proving they disdain woman and we can't be trusted with our own bodies. They really do believe they own our vaginas and are using them to prevent people from gaining access to a legal procedure here in America. The GOP has no shame.

Morning

You forgot that since they want to repel HIR that 13yr old now has a pre-existing condition and won't be able to get health insurance unless she's on her parents or employeed or married and on her husbands insurance.

Seriously these people make me tired

Raine,
I spent a fitful night experiencing gruesome flashbacks to a rape that I experienced over 30 years ago. I wrote a piece that is too long to post here, but I am wondering if it might make a difference if we collected all of these rape stories (as another friend of mine wrote yesterday "rape is as common as a cold") in one spot on the web and then present the collection of stories to Congress or something. My experience, as terrible it was for me, was no doubt not as horrible as what other women have experienced. I am not suggesting that any woman out there feel like she should relive a painful part of her past, but if there are those who may feel that sharing their stories may be cathartic and may also help to persuade the bastards in Washington DC that they need to back off and not try to renege on 30 years of progress toward promoting true equality for women. I would truly appreciate your thoughts on whether this idea is worth pursuing. If you would like to read about my experience with rape, I am happy to share it with whoever would like to read it. Thanks for your post today. I hope that the rats in DC read it and think about it and talk to the women in their lives and ask them about their thoughts on "redefining rape."

I really do think it would be wonderful for women to have a place to share the stories, anonymously.

I've been there myself. perhaps it is time for us to come together and tell these people that rape has many different faces and circumstances. There is no place on the web for that right now?

A quick Google search turned up the following sites, but I am thinking of a site where women could post their rape experiences anonymously for the purpose of demonstrating to the idiots in DC that rape has many many faces and that it is not their place to redefine an experience that so many women have lived through.

Glad you got some sleep, Livin!

But I think that we gotta watch these bastids like hawks - they will not miss a single opportunity to shove their fundamentalist (neanderthal) values onto the rest of the unsuspecting country. I think that the entire notion of limiting abortion is not the top priority that the citizens of this country want Wash DC working on right now - they are playing to their most basest base. ugh

Raine,
I agree 100% - we need to defeat the entire legislation. I am open to any ideas that others may have regarding how to best keep the pressure on the congress critters as far as getting them to abandon this lousy bill.

I thought the progressive talker was at 1640 or something. At least that's the station that carries Thom Hartmann. Our local station 1600 is only live for local shows and Ed. All the other national shows air on delay here and there are still shows that don't air in New York like Steph whose hour was dropped by 1600 just as she was leaving New York to go back to LA and just before she came out.
