The broad anti-abortion measure would restrict federally-assisted abortion coverage to cases of "forcible rape," excluding in that definition instances where women are drugged and raped, where women say "no" but do not physically fight off the perpetrator, and various cases of date rape. It also excludes instances of statutory rape in which minors are impregnated by adults. The victim in all cases would be denied abortion coverage under Medicaid and forbidden from seeking health care tax benefits.
Introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), the bill boasts 173 mainly Republican co-sponsors and has been designated a top priority by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).
Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. (Smith's spokesman did not respond to a call and an email requesting comment.)
Given that the bill also would forbid the use of tax benefits to pay for abortions, that 13-year-old's parents wouldn't be allowed to use money from a tax-exempt health savings account (HSA) to pay for the procedure. They also wouldn't be able to deduct the cost of the abortion or the cost of any insurance that paid for it as a medical expense.

Morning
You forgot that since they want to repel HIR that 13yr old now has a pre-existing condition and won't be able to get health insurance unless she's on her parents or employeed or married and on her husbands insurance.
Seriously these people make me tired

I don't understand why they are so scared of women that they have to keep them dependant on others

Raine,
I spent a fitful night experiencing gruesome flashbacks to a rape that I experienced over 30 years ago. I wrote a piece that is too long to post here, but I am wondering if it might make a difference if we collected all of these rape stories (as another friend of mine wrote yesterday "rape is as common as a cold") in one spot on the web and then present the collection of stories to Congress or something. My experience, as terrible it was for me, was no doubt not as horrible as what other women have experienced. I am not suggesting that any woman out there feel like she should relive a painful part of her past, but if there are those who may feel that sharing their stories may be cathartic and may also help to persuade the bastards in Washington DC that they need to back off and not try to renege on 30 years of progress toward promoting true equality for women. I would truly appreciate your thoughts on whether this idea is worth pursuing. If you would like to read about my experience with rape, I am happy to share it with whoever would like to read it. Thanks for your post today. I hope that the rats in DC read it and think about it and talk to the women in their lives and ask them about their thoughts on "redefining rape."

I really do think it would be wonderful for women to have a place to share the stories, anonymously.
I've been there myself. perhaps it is time for us to come together and tell these people that rape has many different faces and circumstances. There is no place on the web for that right now?

visually I'm picturing a wall or maybe a fence with paper's attached that would be women's experiences

But I think that we gotta watch these bastids like hawks - they will not miss a single opportunity to shove their fundamentalist (neanderthal) values onto the rest of the unsuspecting country. I think that the entire notion of limiting abortion is not the top priority that the citizens of this country want Wash DC working on right now - they are playing to their most basest base. ugh

No problem, Raine, I know it takes a few days to get your strength back - take it easy, okay? Let me know what i can do, okay? Plus I saw that they have already taken out the most onorous language - I think that they are already responding to the overwhelming response from women who are all just saying "NO!"

I know they removed that term... It still doesn't change the spirit of what they are trying to do.

BTW, 1310 The King in Atlanta has apparently gone off the air. They're still broadcasting on the internet, which gives me hope that they will attempt to find a new station or resurrect 1310 soon. We really need a continuous progressive voice on the radio down here, though.
