Congressional Update
Author: BobR    Date: 03/04/2011 13:58:39

Most of the news coverage over the last couple weeks has been the ongoing labor battles in Wisconsin, Ohio, and other states. We've also been keeping an eye on the Middle East, particularly Libya. Because of this, the goings-on in the US Congress have mostly flown under the radar. Perhaps it's time we take a closer look.

Despite the House's "need" to take a week off as a funding crisis was looming, threatening a government shutdown, they are still focusing on trying to reduce the deficit. It seemed the Republicans were planning on doing the opposite of whatever Obama wanted, regardless of the consequences, but they finally came to their senses. So what else is going on in the Houses of Congress?

In a blatant power play, they are trying to neuter the EPA, especially with regards to climate regulations. Because, of course - global warming is a myth, right? Never mind that a study has shown that air pollution can reduce life by 2 years. We just need to let the market decide how much pollution is too much. Conserving natural resources is apparently not conservative.

They are also busy with useless bills like the latest one preventing federal funds from being used to pay for abortions, even though the Hyde Amendment has been handling that since 1976. But hey - it's never too early to pander to your base for the next election cycle.

Sometimes, they get it right. Both parties have panned on the idea of introducing a VAT (Value-Added Tax). These are quite common in "socialist" Europe, despite it being a regressive tax. What's interesting is that the so-called "Fair Tax" is essentially the same thing. I guess a lot of Republicans like THAT one because it's All-American, not French.

Despite the Republican Congress essentially doing nothing but posturing, the job situation continues to improve. They have to decide whether they want to take credit for that for the 2012 election, or forge ahead with their budget-busting that will throw hundreds of thousands on the unemployment rolls like their supporters want. Damned if you do; damned if you don't... Governing is hard (especially when it clashes with politics)...

So how do most Americans want the budget balanced? Raise taxes on the rich and cut the Defense budget. The latter will likely result in some increase in unemployment as well (unless defense contractors can retool for civilian projects). Other job-killing moves include the free-trade agreements that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are pushing for. These are always touted as "opening up markets for American products", but when they are with poorer countries (as these are), the only "products" that get exported are jobs.

I made my suggestions in my last blog, but is anybody listening? Contact your CongressCritters, and let them know they need to do what's right for MOST Americans, not what will look good on their next election campaign. Otherwise, they are just wasting time and taxpayer dollars.

I'm just sitting here shaking my head at these people.
That last line is the kicker:

Ain't that the damn truth.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I hope that everyone is doing well today. I am checking in before a sub assignment.

Governor Scott Walker and the Republican party in general seems to be utterly deaf to the pleas of their constituents on how to address the problems of the budget and the economy. However, as they are trying to be courtiers to would-be corporate feudal overlords, th is is to be expected. Still, contacting any Congress person would be a good idea -- do not let your silence be seen as consent.

The market Watch link doesn't mention that we are actually BELOW 9% employment FINALLY!!!!

8.9% is nothing to sneeze at!

So, he's really going there.
Boehner Pledges to Cut Social Security and Medicare
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told the Wall Street Journal that he's "determined to offer a budget this spring that curbs Social Security and Medicare, despite the political risks, and that Republicans will try to persuade voters that sacrifices are needed."

Said Boehner: "People in Washington assume that Americans understand how big the problem is, but most Americans don't have a clue... Once they understand how big the problem is, I think people will be more receptive to what the possible solutions may be

Check it out!
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made culinary history when they served homebrewed White House Honey Ale, made with a pound of honey from the White House Beehive, to guests at last month's Super Bowl party. They are the first presidential couple to ever charge their chefs with the ancient--and now wildly popular--art of homebrewing, according to White House Curator Bill Allman.
{snip}

And the homebrewing is going to continue.

"It is very safe to assume that there will be more White House beer in the future," said Semonti Stephens, a spokesman for the East Wing.

Speaking of Public Radio, I thought I would pass this nugget of information on, let you run into less than liberal person who wants to slash public Broadcasting.

What is the difference between CPB, PBS & NPR? It's really quite simple. A teabagger might even understand it.

Well, I can't -- I mean, WTF?

Boehner: Good Jobs Data Due To Tax Cuts (Not Obama Stimulus)

Any improvement in the jobs situation for our country is welcome news, but unemployment is still far above where the Obama Administration promised it would be when it forced our children to pay for the 'stimulus' fiasco, which accelerated a government spending binge that continues to block our nation's path to prosperity.

"The improvement seen in this report is a credit to the hard work of the American people and their success in stopping the tax hikes that were due to hit our economy on January 1. Removing the uncertainty caused by those looming tax hikes provided much-needed relief for private-sector job creators in America. Now we must build on it by eliminating the job-crushing uncertainty being caused by excessive spending, borrowing, and regulating in Washington. We must take immediate action to end the spending binge in Washington and remove federal barriers to job growth, like the ObamaCare small business mandate repealed by the House this week.

"The path to prosperity and job creation lies in liberating our economy from the shackles of excessive government and unleashing the awesome potential of the American people. This has been and will continue to be the number-one priority for our new majority."

What the HELL is this guy talking about?

Comment by Raine on 03/04/2011 16:02:19
heartless bastards. West Virginia's two Democratic senators blamed House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday after their hopes of having the remains of World War I veteran Frank Buckles honored in the Capitol Rotunda were dashed, at least for now.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin III both released statements saying the Ohio Republican had blocked the Capitol honor. Asked if that were true, Boehner spokesman Mike Steel said the speaker and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would seek Defense Department permission for a ceremony for Buckles at Arlington National Cemetery.
