Water Wars
Author: BobR    Date: 02/08/2008 13:24:56

The water crisis in the southeast (and Atlanta in particular) was in the news last year when it was announced that Atlanta had less than 3 months of water left. The 30 year growth boom had bumped up against Mother Nature, and Mother Nature wasn't budging. The skimpy system of man-made lakes that Atlanta uses for water was tapped out (sorry ), and the drought had not refilled them.

Pictures like these really tell the story:
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa213/FourFreedoms/Allatoona2007.jpg

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa213/FourFreedoms/LanierNov2007.jpg

(note: That tree stump used to be under water)

So in typical GA government fashion, a band-aid approach was applied: water restrictions. Non-essential water use was restricted, then prohibited. The selfish were the first to cry "but my lawn!!". Then the businesses that use water started trying to lay claim to what was left. Something had to be done. So our governer did what any true leader would do.

He prayed...

On the statehouse steps, of all places.

An lo and behold, it DID rain. It was a skimpy little bit, but it rained. Of course, the weather report said it was going to rain before the prayor vigil, so Sonny timed that one right (with a little help from the meteorologist).

Over the last month or two, we've gotten even more rain, enough to forestall the crisis for a while. Does that mean the reservoirs are full? No. Does that mean we are out of the woods? No. Does that mean people think we can go back to the "old ways" of selfish water usage?

Of course.

Sonny wants to relax the water restrictions
Summer's not sunk after all. The governor wants to give swimmers and backyard gardeners water.

Gov. Sonny Perdue on Wednesday offered a reprieve from the near-total ban on outdoor watering to the landscape industry, gardeners and thousands of neighborhood swimming pool associations, swim teams and private pool owners.

"Swim, kids, swim," Perdue exhorted at an afternoon news conference in his office.

If local governments agree, pool-filling will be allowed and home and business owners will be able to hand-water landscaping and flower gardens for 25 minutes a day, between midnight and 10 a.m., on a three-day-a-week schedule. Watering with sprinklers would still be banned, except for watering newly installed landscapes.

How responsible is it to ease restrictions when the reservoirs are still at a critically low level? Where is that water going to come from?

From TN of course. If you can't make it rain at home, you can steal the water from the neighbors. GA lawmakers want to redraw the state lines to make part of the TN river part of GA:
Desperate for water amid a historic drought, some Georgia lawmakers are trying to reopen an 1818 border dispute with Tennessee.

They have set their sights on a stretch of the 652-mile long Tennessee River that flows tantalizingly close to the Georgia line — and by some historic accounts, should be within Georgia's borders.

"It's never too late to right a wrong," said Georgia state Sen. David Shafer, R-Duluth.

Shafer's Senate resolution says a flawed survey in 1818 mistakenly marked Georgia's border one mile south of the 35th parallel — and thus excluded the Tennessee River from Georgia's reach.

There is a reason thirsty lawmakers are eyeing the river: It has a flow about 15 times greater than the river feeding Atlanta.

Why do I have visions of the Hatfields and the McCoys?... Armed rednecks jealously guarding their water with muskets and flintlocks... It's the north -vs- the south in a whole new civil war!

Meanwhile, I keep watching the faucet, waiting for the day when nothing but air and rusty mud sputters out. That's leadership - Republican style...

Good morning! ALL Your waters belong to us!

'Tis a pity we can't redirect water from Pittsburgh to Georgia. The rain's been coming down steadily almost since I got back here and there have been minor flood warnings.

Now we have snow predicted for the next few days, but the temp isn't going to be low enough to keep the snow from melting.

*sigh* no liberal will EVER be attracted to John McCain

Morning, folks!

I was looking at the Google Earth last night after the border dispute story got posted...is it that tiny little patch of river at the far Northwestern corner of Georgia? According to Google at least, the border is in the middle of said river, but I could be mistaken.

And this liberal did find McCain interesting once. In the 2000 primary when I felt it was important enough to cross the lines and cast a vote AGAINST ol' GW. Hell, I even thought about doing it again this time, but Romney had Mass well in hand and the gesture would have been wasted.

Good morning all.

I really didn't sleep well last night. My sleeping habits are starting to get as bad as Momma's.

BTW, how does anyone feel about this place especially Mala? I saw at orbitz.com the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn, VA near the Francis Scott Key bridge is available for any weekend we pick (even the infamous April 11th) for only $84 a night. This looks like it might be the best deal.

Polar Bear: It was wearing a Dharma initiative collar, or something similar. The age of the bones wasn't clear. If they were older, then perhaps the Dharma group is much older than initial appearances.

HeliPeople: He was responsible for the deaths of all the people that were originally at the outpost.

Ben: He said he had someone on the ship feeding him info.

Stimulus bill was passed btw...

Comment by Raine on 02/08/2008 15:50:13
The House voted 380-34 to accept the Senate's $170 billion measure, just a few hours after Democratic and Republican senators reached accord and ended a days-long stalemate over the bill.

The deal, passed in the Senate on a 81-16 vote, includes rebate check amounts of $300 to $600 for people who have an income between $3,000 and $75,000, plus $300 per child.

Couples earning up to $150,000 would get $1,200.

But the plan also gives checks to more than 20 million Social Security beneficiaries and 250,000 handicapped veterans and their widows.

Two White House officials said President Bush will probably sign the bill next week.

The pilot seemed interested in going because he was supposed to be the pilot of that plane. The others were probably all affected by Dharma to some extent, and by the repercussions of Ben's actions.

What's the location and exact dates we're going for and I'll check it out now.

The holiday Inn in Roslyn, the link is below.

Would it be better for you Mala if we do this the last weekend in April? Then we won't have to worry about Mom getting upset with you.

I emailed her with the dates - right now she says she's fine with it. So what's best for the majority is fine with me :D

Polar bears in the desert? The HeliPeople want Ben? How does Ben know all that stuff? Plane on the bottom of the ocean!

Next week we see person #4 of the Oceanic 6!

Plane: I think it was faked footage by the same folks that want to keep the island a secret.

Oh no!! I think a ***SPOILER ALERT*** may have been in order. I go to bed too early to watch Lost live, so I've TiVo'd it. Is it now completely ruined for me?

Op-ed from DCRTV

Rant - 2/8 - OK, so righty talker WMAL is suggesting this morning that Republican voters in Virginia, which doesn't have party registration, pick up a Democratic Party primary ballot on Tuesday and vote for the weaker of the two candidates - Obama or Clinton. Since McCain has pretty much locked up the GOP nomination. OK. That's fine. But I've got a suggestion for the Democrats - and I know there are quite a few who listen to WMAL. If you get a radio ratings "ballot," write down rival WTOP even though you listen to WMAL. Give the those smart asses at WMAL a taste of their own "medicine." Remember: If you listen to WMAL, write down WTOP. I'll say it again: If you listen to WMAL, write down WTOP. Got it? Good. More Rants.....

Act now to save the life of an Afghan reporter!

Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh, a student at Balkh University and a reporter for Jahan-I-Now (New World) newspaper, was arrested in October and sentenced to death January 22, 2008, after he supposedly confessed to blasphemy. Kambakhsh has said his intent was to foster discussion on the role of women in Islamic societies. Instead, he was arrested in the Balkh province, tried before a secret court without legal representation and sentenced to death.

Bob great blog opening! Water rights are the coming next crisis. Not just in the US but all around the world.

Bob, I just want to remind you while the hill folk of West Virginia might have had penchant for violence and inter-family warfare. They were not armed with flintlock rifles. As you can see from the picture, from 1897 of the Hatfields, they were armed with the most modern of weapons. Clockwise from the left they are a Colt 1873 Peacemaker pistol, then what seem to be two Smith and Wesson Scofield model pistols. The final two rifles are Winchester lever action rifles, "the rifle that won the American West."*

*The weapons identification was supplied by Brother Mondo. He is my go to man on arms and armements military history and contemporary small infantry unit tactics. If you have any questions feel free to ask and they will be answered.

Scrolling through some things below...

Looks like we'll be getting $1500 here in the TriSec compound...probably in May/June according to the story? Well, that would put a big chunk towards any relocation expenses, wouldn't it? (Targeted for July, if we go through with it.) Well, thank you Mr. President, I may actually spend that on the economy instead of paying off bills with it.

Cheney has a dog? You can fool people, but usually not dogs; it must be a passive breed...maybe a Gitmo Waterboard Retriever?

NH just lost a Navy Seal, KIA in Iraq...on his 4th tour of duty.

Last time we were in DC, we stayed at the Best Western - Key Bridge, right next to the Holiday Inn. It is a very nice location. Convenient to everything, and plenty of places to hang out. Plus the Metro is steps away for day-touring.

I just went back to the site. Apparently the difference is whether you stay to Sunday or until Monday. So I guess it's 114 for the two nights but it averages out to 84 if you stay until Monday. When I plotted out, I was looking at possibly doing Friday-Monday for myself.

Hey all, just stopping by. I am NOT going to go on my Red Cross call, due to a real possibility of a job coming up. (fingers crossed).

I would like to come to the meet-up, depending when it will be. I need to be in NYC sometime before June and anytime in April sounds good. I could go to DC, then take the train to NYC. I only need to be in the city for 1 day (a meeting) and it could be any day. I just need to co-ordinate with the people that I'm working with. So, count me and my wife in, as long as I can work it out with the NY people.

Oh. And Bob, great post, GA sounds like its quickly becoming Urinetown! One of my favorite shows. (A water shortage forces people to have to stop flushing and eventually an evil Corporation makes people pay money to have the privilege to pee, which leads to a revolution).

When I compared the rates from Orbitz, it would actually only cost me a few bucks to stay until Monday then to just do Friday-Sunday.

Comment by livingonli on 02/08/2008 18:23:04
I meant a few bucks more of course.

Quote by velveeta jones: Hey all, just stopping by.

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to pay in advance for a room. Unless I can room with someone who can (and pay them back), I'm out of the picture.

We won't be able to pay in advance either, at least not until next Friday at the earliest.

okay - the Spoiler image has been added as an emoticon, although because of its size, it won't be in the quick access panel on the left. It IS in the pop-up box, or just type in

Hey! It's day!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get away with any of this next week during work, but it's been fun this week.

The guy I'm supposed to be working for will be back on Monday - my first time meeting him.

I better get some errands done. I am really slacking off today.

I think I would rather take a nap though.

It's that kind of day. My computer kept freezing up. I had to reboot it 3 times today.

Comment by TriSec on 02/09/2008 02:02:25
Evening folks. Recovering TriSec here, instead of at my first Blue & Gold banquet as Cubmaster...

Which now gives me an interesting observation on our new friend influenza and the alleged "vaccine".

The Waltham Public School system has been ravaged by it this week; anectodal reports indicate between 1/4 and 1/3 of students affected in the Bright, Fitzgerald, and Wittemore schools.

This has affected our Cub Pack to the same rate, roughly 1/3 of the expected participants called the chairman to cancel this evening.

And Athena has also had a rash of patients, though not at the same percentage. I have heard of at least one co-worker that has been out and has suffered to the same degree as we have on this one.

I'm surprised more by the achiness of this one...I was never really congested, never really had a cough, but my temp had skyrocketed earlier in the week (I reported 102º once, but upon further review of our inaccurate digital thermometer, that may have been as high as 104º)...and I've had such a general pain that it hurts to sit or recline in any one position for any length of time. And now I've got some low-grade abdominal/chest pains that had better damn well be muscular instead of cardio-vascular..

But in any case, Javi got his vaccine from his pediatrician; Maria got hers at the same time. Waltham Public runs a clinic for all their students, and AthenaHealth also does an annual free vaccine clinic...

So why did we all get it, and why did we get it so hard?

Either the vaccine was completely the wrong strain this year...or the formula was botched and it was completely ineffective.

Or maybe some of those predictions are right, and the virus is mutating too fast for us to react to it anymore...

The observation we had at work was that there were a number of even pro athletes that have gotten the flu this year. It was interesting if you watch any NHL or NBA game how many teams have had players out with the flu over the last month.
