Yesterday, the Dems won a seat in the House of Representatives, NY-26. It was the seat vacated by Representative Chris Lee, also known as the shirtless Craigslist guy. It should be noted that this is a heavily Republican-leaning district and has only had 3 or 4 Democrats representing it since the 1870s

Is this a referendum on the Paul Ryan Medicare plan?
With 75% of precincts reporting, Democrat Kathy Hochul was leading Republican Jane Corwin 48% to 42%, with the tea party candidate Jack Davis getting 8%, and news outlets were calling the race for the Democrat.
Most analysts say so.Many people believe that this is backlash. People LIKE Medicare regardless of political affiliation Just don't tell the GOP that.
"This race is about the fact that it's a three-way race," Cantor told reporters. "I do not think it can be seen as a signal as to the role of the budget reforms that we have proposed, including Medicare."

Republicans could take some solace from the fact that it was a three-way race, making it a more ambiguous indicator than a pure head-to-head contest.

But it couldn’t be anything other than unsettling for Republicans to lose what had been a GOP seat since Jack Kemp held it in the 1970s.
The fact is that a Tea Party candidate was in the race and took 8% of the vote - enough to split the race and hand the victory to a Democrat.

You see, suddenly Eric Cantor considers the Tea Party the *Other*. I wonder if anyone will pick up on that. Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and many others helped to create the very monster that allowed this district to go Democratic. Now that they appear to be a liability, they are just a third party. Nothing to see here; Move along.

Nate Silver writes:
That would still qualify as a bad night for the Republicans, however. Based on the way that the district votes in presidential elections, it is 6 percentage points more Republican than the country as a whole. That means, roughly speaking, that in a neutral political environment with average candidates, Ms. Corwin would have won 56 percent of the vote and Ms. Hochul 44 percent — a 12-point victory. A 2-point win instead, therefore, would have spoken to a relatively poor political environment for the Republicans.
This is a district that will probably be split in two since NY is losing 2 seats, but until 2012, we have one more voice fighting for Medicare and for the things that Democrats support.

As the GOP shows more and more how much it disdains people, as Eric Cantor did yesterday, saying
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Monday that if Congress passes an emergency spending bill to help Missouri’s tornado victims, the extra money will have to be cut from somewhere else.

“If there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental,” Mr. Cantor, Virginia Republican, told reporters at the Capitol. The term “pay-fors” is used by lawmakers to signal cuts or tax increases used to pay for new spending.
people are waking up to this nonsense. The GOP does NOT love the Tea Party; they are just using them for populist fodder. It's smoke-and-mirrors to shove a corporate agenda down American throats.

That is a good thing. As I always say: elections matter. I regret that we still have a year and a half to go before we get the change to make things change, but things are looking up as we wallow in the briny mess that the House of Representatives has made.

Congratulations to the people of NY-26, and thank-you for making the right choice.

and
Raine

Ow, there's some funny yellow thing in the sky. It's too bright!

It's like a cacophony of light here anyway. I'm sitting with the firmware guys and they all have their strings of fixtures doing all sorts of things. My little light show came on at 7:15AM as planned. A small sense of accomplishment.

Sophie got a little more bold last night and decided she was going to finish off the food the other cats left behind. Well, either the other cats are going to learn to eat when the food is served, or I'm going to have one very fat cat and two skinny cats. Or it's going to get a bit bloody.....

I suggest the "pay-for" is to cut any spending for Cantor's district. If that's not enough - cut aid to Israel.

Morning, comrades!

I am cowering under my desk at the "eye of God" that is obviously glaring at us today. Freakin' minister got the day wrong!

**raptures**

Huh? Somebody here just said that was the "Sun"?

Meanwhile, I'm off listening to the BBC and the Brits pondering the merits of the so-called "special relationship". I think a local might have nailed it on the head.

"It's not special, it's just easier." In this day and age, that's probably the best we can hope for.

And how come we don't have a "special" relationship with Canada and Mexico? But I digress.

Rep. McHenry is a classless moron.

I took the liberty of following what others have done by posting a piece of my mind on his FB page.

Say, any English football fans about?

The BBC has been hyping the Champion's League title match this Saturday, and I must admit to more than a passing interest this time.

Look, I *know* Manchester United is the Yankees of Football, but it matters not to this extremely casual fan at the moment. (They're playing Barcelona.)

I was hoping Vancouver would win. It's nice to see a Canadian team in the Stanley Cup finals. Once the game went to the 2nd overtime, I had to go to bed, so I missed the ending.

I'll definitely be pulling for the Brunes To. Go. All. The. Way..

I usually laugh at the weather, but I'm thinking I might want to review the tornado protocols these days.

"No specific threat" to turn a phrase....but the Great Worcester Tornado of '53 broke up not very far from here, as far as tornadoes go. And the flat plain of Central Massachusetts/Southern NH is also a bit of a mini-alley in recent years.

John Edwards to be indicted

What an utter disappointment all around.... I have to wonder when John Ensigns turn will be. He was in ACTIVE office, unlike Edwards.

Heh.. McHenry's Facebook page is now locked to new comments, probably so they can scrub it of all the negative commentary. That's nothing new tho his staff had been caught scrubbing his entry on Wikipedia of wrongdoings and embarrassing statements before.

Not a problem.. we've got it covered.

HE's quite a piece of work. I am just absolutely astounded at how he treated Elizabeth Warren. Just astounded.

The people at the CBC are probably happy to see a Canadian team back in the Stanley Cup Finals. Strangely enough, the last time the Canuks were in the finals was when the Rangers last won the cup in '94 (Which MSG will endlessly relive until the Rangers win the cup again).

It's a little known fact that at the last hockey game ever played at The Gahhhden, a disgruntled fan placed a curse on the team. He brought his pet goat to the game, and somebody complained and wound up throwing it onto the ice.

On his way out, the fan said 'Da Broons ain't gonna win no more." His name was Harry Frazee.

Oh, and the Red Sox stink.

I was walking by the break room and noticed that the Sox were on the TeeVee. At least I thought it was live.

While I would love to see the Bruins win the Cup, part of me doesn't want it because of the way the Jacobs have treated the fans before the fans finally said enough and stopped coming to games. And I feel they should get a good share of the blame for the lockout year.

Not a Happy lady this afternoon. A certain person in my life refuses to let go of anything, then claims she is overwhelmed with everything. I am talking about physical items as well.

Goodness, I knew this would be a rough week, but you know, I have feelings and I hurt too.

14-0 now.

Any way to convert some of these runs to goals?

I'm not allowed to watch any Bruins games. I'm a known B's killer here. I have a track record going back to the inexplicable choke last year; every time I watch, they lose.

Fortunately, I'm at the store tonight.
